Can everyone just calm their jets on the notion that Brendan Rodgers, or anyone else for that matter, is in prime position for the manager’s job?
I’ve seen these appointments at close quarters for a long time. An interview is often little more than a courtesy. Remember years ago, the ex-Juventus boss, a disaster in Turin, never taken seriously in Glasgow, but he had an influential agent that Celtic wanted to get closer to?
There was also an ex-Celtic player who applied. Everyone know he was a hopeless manager, but still, am ex-player deserved a little courtesy. He was interviewed, then politely told they were going in a different direction.
Brendan was a winning Celtic manager. If, as reported, he was interviewed, you’d better believe he has invested some capital in even being considered. The way he behaved at Liverpool, then Celtic, and his lack of structural legacy at both these clubs and at Leicester, means Brendan has a bit of a reputational challenge going forward. Even being considered by Celtic would do him good.
I don’t see it going any further than this, though. We’ve seen what an actual great manager can do. One that leaves a legacy of a valuable squad. One that never considered short-term loans as part of his modus operandi. A team player in every sense.
We have had an elite operator for two years. The difference to what went before is stark.
I know that in 2019 we didn’t as much appoint Neil Lennon as end up with him after an unfruitful search. So, if we’re reading the signs, there’s a chance we’ll end up with a breaker, not a builder.
I’m reading the signs and I just can’t see Brendan Rodgers getting this gig. His interview is just noise, it’s not the sound you should be paying attention to.

No return of Congerton
No expensive loanees with no chance of buying at the end of the term.
Put Rodgers in charge of the development of players (his sweet spot) & infracstructure and have the scouts work their magic on incoming (to a template of young stars with a sell-on in a few years).
Get Peter Lawell back in his box and leave Nicholson to manage Rodgers

Spot on…!

Deare me. Schorchio here. I can’t handled it.
Hopefully get some answers today.
I doubt DD would go to all this hassle if BR said no.

Maresca to Leicester is the word. We will soon find out if it was an opportunity missed, or we dodged a bullet.
I like Scott Brown as an individual, as a football person and as a Celtic leader.
Scott progressed incredibly under Brendan with a huge level of mutual respect emerging from their relationship.
Chris Davies has been a huge cog in Brendan’s success as a manager.
How the 3 of these can gel and work together could be interesting.
There is value in continuity in sport.
There is also value in slightly changing the menu a bit and evolving.
We could be on the brink of something special if what is reported does indeed come to pass.
BREAKING! Odin Thiago Holm to Celtic is ON as medical set and key contract stipulation added for Valerenga playmaker
– Now that’s the profile we need to keep repeating.
More please Celtic.

Odin is the viking god of both war and death, looks like we are adding steal to the midfield 😆

I’d tell Rodger’s that he’s got a backroom team in place – a change of team may benefit him.
Burnley78,
I understand Davies is about to become the new Swansea Manager.

Under Ange we were creative as a formation/tactic, we never had a creative No 10 or 8 after Rogic.
If Rodgers was to take a pre season game right now and go 4-2-3-1 liken he used to, i think we are a bit out of kilter beyond the back 5
e.g.,
Iwata McGregor
Abada Hatate Jota
or
O’Reilly McGregor
Jota Hatate Maeda
or Hatate McGregor
Jota O’Reilly Maeda
Assuming McGregor doesn’t want the 10 role anymore, who takes it?

If it’s to be Rodgers – and I’d grudgingly accept him back – he needs to be told in no uncertain terms that the core of this present team stays as it is.

Wait, what? Whos gonnae be picking the team now?!
The list of candidates ranges from average through decent to excellent – if they are going to be dictated to and the team picked for them you can go to the bottom of the pile and take your pick.
HH
Don’t understand the article either – I get that bookies odds are not a good indicator but when reliable sources are posting about meetings in Mallorca and now BR travelling to meet DD, he is clearly the preferred candidate.
I suspect this is against Lawwells wishes and Paul67 has additional info on what went on when Rodgers left the first time?
Understandable to a point, if so but if Rodgers is appointed this will probably be the first ill informed post I’ve read on here.
HH
First ill informed post by Paul 67 I mean – the rest of you have a good track record of that ;)

:-))))))))
So let’s say DD get his man. Who is going to keep the chairman from looking like he has been completely trumped.
And what will his reaction be? Will he resign? Sulk? Pretend it was all much ado about nothing?
Tough first gig for Maresca.
No thanks, ego has landed.

SIEMPRE CELTIC
The word that is missing from all this is ‘know’ – plenty of theories and speculation – great for the blog.
DD in Glasgow.

Odin is the viking god of both war and death,
If he can help deal out a second dose of that to the Ibrox outfit , he will do for me!
Good Morning Tim’s…
Lee Congerton was interesting.
Of course he didn’t go to Leicester City with BR and his chosen few in February 2019.
After they’d gone to the East Midlands he was offered the Sporting Directors job of Celtic, he turned it down.
My feeling was that our player acquisition and sales at the time was a clusterfudge – if we are being honest the behind the scenes bun fights and we don’t have Lee Congerton or anyone coming out of that looking good.
I remember Congerton got a tip off (end of 2017!?) – Thomas Castagne was not happy at Alalanta and their Board would let him go for €8mn.
It had to be a fast, efficient swoop and be done before the January window opened.
We needed a long term replacement for P.C. Lustig.
Anyway as per the Celtic Executive took over and went in, with a €5mn bid, it was of course rejected.
We get to the January window and other Clubs are now aware TC wants to move and the bidding war starts.
The Atalanta manager finds out the Board are going to sell him, decides he wants to keep him and tell TC he’s in his plans and is going to play him, he asks the Board not to sell him.
Too late Celtic come in with the €8mn bid, however the bidding has gone up to €10mn from other Clubs and the Atalanta Board are now saying he’s not for sale.
So to me you have a cultural difference, the partnerships and “intelligence” that Lee Congerton was working on and the way to secure transfers was very different from the Celtic approach.
Go in cheap and negotiate, every penny a prisoner.
It seems we have got away from that approach and the AP, Micheal Nicholson, Chris McKay approach seemed much smoother and delivered real value.
Of course there is no reason we would need Lee Congerton back, our structure is so much better than it was in the summer of 2016, yet it’s worth putting things in context.

True. A big statement though – that the Rodgers stuff is just ‘noise’, and if this is correct then conversely what a great call by Paul67.
But it does seem to have gone way past the stage of just a ‘courtesy’ call to Rodgers.
I suspect we’ll find out in the next 2-3 days.
HH
Just Noise:
If there is any truth in the speculation that Paul 67 has a source (Peter Lawwell) we would naturally assume PL gave Paul 67 the line (or a version of it)
Paul 67 in the past has been critical of BR (again I suspect either from his source or in defence of his source)
But – if it’s not Just Noise and BR is a contender where does that leave PL
And if PL is not happy you can assume Mark Lawwell may not be happy either
If it is BR, DD has a big job creating a positive working environment within the group
I think they all need to go for a pint
I sense a lot of tension
67ECW
Put it another way: would you be happy for BR to come in and sell McGregor, Kyogo, Jota, Hatate, Abada, CCV – just to stamp his mark on the team? Does he have better players for each of those positions up his sleeve? Before the CL starts?

No manager is going to come in and dictate that we sell our 6 highest performing players – you are worrying about nothing in that regard.

I wasn’t aware of that re Chris Davies.
I know first hand the impact he had.
Big shoes for someone to fill then.
I guess it’s why the Broony Brendan ticket makes sense.
We may receive bids that are acceptable for anyone – thats part of the game. We are hopefully ready for that to a point but hopefully in most cases it does not materialise.
Abada in that list is the one most likely to go I’d say.

FASSREIFEN on 13TH JUNE 2023 11:30 AM
There’s a balance and I’m sure one attacking formation can morph into another with a good coach. We have many sellable assets (thx Ange) and some will leave. Spurs seem to be doing what they can to keep Kane so that reduces a gimme in Kyogo leaving but still a risk. All of these will command big profits that I hope will allow Lawell Jnr, not Rodgers, to do his magic.
I suspect full backs staying wide instead of inverting may become a thing again & wee Greg might be under threat. The return of a proper DM is a very BR thing so maybe Iwata steps up or we go to the market. The new Norwegian god has signalled that maybe we have.
Rodgers improves players so I expect some redemptions ahead. We don’t need radical change but upgrades.
HH
Rodgers kept the core of the team back in 2016 and improved what was a decent Deila squad.
Happy to be corrected but I’m pretty sure Dembele, Sinclair, Toure were the only regulars who were added initially; effectively replacing Commons/Mackay Stephen, ‘lack of second striker’ and Mulgrew

Agree with this. A more equal relation between scouting/recruitment and management needed if we are to build on Ange’s legacy.
FASSREIFEN on 13TH JUNE 2023 11:51 AM
At some point we need to flip from the ‘Manager as God’ strategy that we run. It’s really old-fashioned and fraught with risk.
I’m all up for the Celtic ‘Group’….let coaches, players and managers come and go but a constant remains.
