Rodgers, revisionism and reticence

214

Brendan Rodgers did not last as long at Celtic as he now has at Leicester but the wheels came off the bogey far sooner in Glasgow.  His third season in the Midlands will not reach the heights or performance levels achieved earlier, but yesterday’s win over his former club, Liverpool, underlines his abilities.

The money on offer in Glasgow broke new records here but was a fraction of what was available across the EPL, or in China, where wages on offer in the summer of 2018 were lifechanging for someone already on a multimillion pound contract.

Revisionism is now a popular pastime when recounting Brendan’s era in Glasgow.  Having won the seven domestic trophies open to him, while qualifying for both Champions League group stages before that summer of 2018 pivot, he owed Celtic little, although honesty and frankness with the support is a prerequisite.  Creating crisis when you don’t get what you want is unworthy.

The biggest surprise for many is that he remains in Leicester after two and a bit successful seasons there and the same in Glasgow.  That’s five years throwing aces like an Aussie bowler.  In the last two years, Manchester United, Tottenham, Arsenal and Chelsea have all changed manager, Brendan was overlooked on each occasion.  Why?

‘It’s all about Brendan’ explains it.  He played the media and fans at both Liverpool and Celtic to his own ends, to the detriment of his employers.  Big clubs with choices will be reticenct to throw the dice with him.  If he is in the market again, he’ll be looking for the desperate, not the aspirational.

  1. But what is clear is that BRs management team isn’t cheap. The luxury of a set-piece coach isn’t one any Celtic manager is going to be able to have any time soon

  2. JOHN SWINNEY today refused to offer any fan assurances over the rescheduled clash between Celtic and Rangers in February.

The Glasgow derby – initially due to be played on January 2 – was pushed back to Wednesday, February 2 after the SPFL brought forward the winter break.

Governing body chiefs ruled the break should be moved to follow the Boxing Day fixtures after clubs appealed with Scottish Governemnt curbs limiting capacity to just 500 fans.

It’s hoped that following three-weeks of the strict curbs fan capacity restrictions will be eased meaning a full-house for the powderkeg clash. But that remains up in the air until the Scottish Government review next month.

Deputy First Minister Mr Swinney was today quizzed over whether there was any decision over fan entry for the match in February – but he made no guarantees as Omicron Covid case numbers continue to soar.

Responding to a direct question on the Celtic vs Rangers fixture, Mr Swinney told BBC’s Good Morning Scotland: “Well that’s a long way off, the 2nd of February, so we’ll take that as it comes.

“What I would say is that the government doesn’t want to have these restrictions in place a moment longer than they are necessary.”

Mr Swinney also discussed the “galloping pace” of the spread of Omicron in Scotland when asked if wider curbs would remain in place longer than the initial three-week period.

He said: “You can see already in the space of about a week or so we’ve gone from having an average daily case level in Scotland of about just over 5,000 to around about 10,000 over the course of the last few days.

“So people can see with their own eyes the galloping pace at which Omicron is moving through Scotland.”

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon is set to provide an update on the Covid situation in Scotland at 2pm today.

  4. NINE Scottish clubs are set to receive a £250,000 UEFA windfall.

The governing body is set to distribute the solidarity payments to clubs not involved in any of the European competitions.

It means nine clubs will receive a portion of the reported £2.32milliion pot which is distributed for use on youth development in Scotland.

The Daily Mail report clubs were informed last week that the money – for clubs not in the Champions League, Europa League or Europa Conference League – is ready to be handed out despite it usually being paid in October.

According to reports Aberdeen, Dundee United, Hibs, Motherwell, Ross County, St Johnstone and St Mirren are the Scottish Premiership sides who’ll receive the cash.

Hamilton and Kilmarnock, who were both relegated last term, will also be handed the payment.

Livingston are said to be missing out on the cash because they did not have an accredited youth system last term.

New Scottish Premiership sides Hearts and Dundee also won’t benefit from the UEFA solidarity payments.

I have mixed emotions when it comes to BR – he’s an excellent manager and was very good for Celtic. We’re unlikely to see success like that again in our lifetimes.

The manner in which he left will always taint his legacy and I thought he overplayed his Celtic credentials – “these are my people” had me thinking hmmmmm.

What’s done is done and we now have AP, who can hopefully restore the Club to a similar level professionalism. On that note I’d like an equally frank and candid article about the shit-show we witnessed during the intervening period.

  6. OK so we now know what Peter Lawwell has to say about Brendan Rodgers.

But what I’d really like to know is what Brendan Rodgers has to say about Peter Lawwell.

But I doubt Brendan Rodgers is that bothered one way or another. He’s too busy getting on with stuff.

  7. Lennon,Rodgers,Lawell,Mc Ginn, etc, who cares.Nothing any of them do affect what we are doing in the slightest, yet their names keep getting regurgitated for reasons that really evade me.We even had Billy Gilmour mentioned recently

.We have a new manager, new CEO,new players, playing a new style of football,a new Transfer Window about to open, new players arriving once again.Enough to be getting on with,I would think.

  8. I’ve no idea if AP reads online forums like this, but if he does, and he’s as smart as he seems, he probably realises that sooner or later he’s going to be getting the same treatment as other former managers.

  11. Nothing will ever beat the way Brendan’s sides destroyed the new club, regular humpings of the highest order, even better when meted out at their place. Those were great days and marvellous being a Celtic fan knowing that the same supporters of the old club were witnessing all of it and willing to accept it was their same club who were being routinely destroyed. The trebles! everything about that time was just Disneyland stuff. Had Brendan left at the end of any season I would have thanked him heartily and wished him every success under the sun, but, he didn’t, and it was the manner of his departure which left a very bad taste in the mouth of most Celtic fans, I can still taste it when his name is mentioned, and, the complete disdain he showed for those he said he was one of, unforgivable. por cierto

  12. 15,849 positive test, 28.8% may be something to do with the figures over the Christmas, por cierto

  16. It’s a slow week for Celtic. I don’t see how you can criticize Paul for posting an article that will stimulate debate in a way that doesn’t cause a rammy that damages Celtic cause right now

Hell hath no fury like a football club scorned.! Remember we received a cool £9M to soften the blow.

Personally I would like to see an in depth analysis of what happened under NL last season. Much more raw & pertinent. Rodgers is yesterday’s news.

‘You have no idea what BR thinks about PL, but you think he’s not bothered’

He’s not bothered enough to have anyone share his views with us. He’s moved on. It’s history. In the past. And he’s preoccupied with the here and now. Maybe if he’d failed in his current job he’d feel differently.

‘he’ll think he’ll think that he’ll get criticized after he leaves’

He’s astute enough to realise just how fickle the support is. They’ll be quick enough to turn on him if he incurs their displeasure, for whatever reason, whether it’s like BR or NFL.

  20. Ernie

“He’s not bothered enough to have anyone share his views with us”

Are you suggesting PL told Paul to post an article on CQN about BR?

    So

PL is so bothered by what people think about BR leaving that in his Christmas break he tells Paul67 to write an article on his blog

Paul just does what ever PL says and writes the article as he’s told to

BR isn’t bothered what people think because he’s a busy man. No ego, not bothered by what people think of him. Never has been so why would he now?

Contrast with PL, a desperate man with no job, so insecure he has to get one of his lapdogs to post critical articles against his arch nemesis. In his CHRISTMAS HOLIDAYS.

    It’s pure fantasy

BR did go public on why left Celtic, strangely enough it was more along the lines of don’t hate me, look how well it’s turned out for me

  21. Bigger man than PL though. Doesn’t get some poor blogger who can’t think for himself to do his dirty work

  22. Call me crazy but I’d imagine the truth is closer to nobody caring much , if it all and Paul67 putting out an article that will try and get people posting on the blog without calling each other silly names.

  23. Articles, critical of previous Celtic employees are fair game.

So far, the targets have been Dom McKay (and his major mistake) and a few on Brendan Rodgers.

Personally, I would lay the blame at the door of others, though not my blog.

I am but a humble, and fairly pointless, poster.

  24. GlassTwoThirdsFull on

Well we’re certainly in the right place for revisionism. Like this for example:

“Multi-treble winning Brendan Rodgers is not a talent spotter. If we are going to spend significant sums of money this summer, better to have Neil Lennon with his hand on the tiller.

It felt like a bad day when Brendan left, but now I am sure it was for the best.”

    Followed by this:

“Brendan was sacked by Liverpool, Neil ‘mutual-ed’ by Hibs, by any measure, a downgrade. ”

    Hmmmmmm.

Interesting to know what your thoughts on what might be Neil Lennon’s next job, Paul? Rodgers got a top half EPL team, if Lennon is better you’d be looking at top four or five?

    ——————–

“before that summer of 2018 pivot”

    ———-

Aaah yes – you must be referring to this pivot?:

    https://www.celticquicknews.co.uk/pay-4m-or-wait-171-days-for-mcginn-pre-contract

The pivot away from showing some ambition to improve in Europe and cowering back into the tiny little shell of old firmery!

Dumped out of the Champions League by teams who accumulated one point out of 72 then losing the league by 25 points! Great call!

You’re getting a bit carried away there.

Let’s just put it this way.

It will be a cold day in hell before we ever get an article on here that is in any way critical of Peter Lawwell.

Your prayers for the repose of his soul would be appreciated.

RIP James – sleeping with the Angels.
