Rodgers, revisionism and reticence

214

Brendan Rodgers did not last as long at Celtic as he now has at Leicester but the wheels came off the bogey far sooner in Glasgow.  His third season in the Midlands will not reach the heights or performance levels achieved earlier, but yesterday’s win over his former club, Liverpool, underlines his abilities.

The money on offer in Glasgow broke new records here but was a fraction of what was available across the EPL, or in China, where wages on offer in the summer of 2018 were lifechanging for someone already on a multimillion pound contract.

Revisionism is now a popular pastime when recounting Brendan’s era in Glasgow.  Having won the seven domestic trophies open to him, while qualifying for both Champions League group stages before that summer of 2018 pivot, he owed Celtic little, although honesty and frankness with the support is a prerequisite.  Creating crisis when you don’t get what you want is unworthy.

The biggest surprise for many is that he remains in Leicester after two and a bit successful seasons there and the same in Glasgow.  That’s five years throwing aces like an Aussie bowler.  In the last two years, Manchester United, Tottenham, Arsenal and Chelsea have all changed manager, Brendan was overlooked on each occasion.  Why?

‘It’s all about Brendan’ explains it.  He played the media and fans at both Liverpool and Celtic to his own ends, to the detriment of his employers.  Big clubs with choices will be reticenct to throw the dice with him.  If he is in the market again, he’ll be looking for the desperate, not the aspirational.

12 trophies in a row – quadruple treble – of which BR won 7, Does that mean that the much maligned Neil Lennon won the other 5? I’m guessing it does, the barrage of flak he got on here (of which I contributed) during the failed 10 in a row season, seems to have affected my memory! It would appear though that he’s been written off as a dud as no one seems prepared to take a chance on him as their manager.

    R.T.B.

It’s a fair point you make.

I have to admit to having a lot of time for Neil, for personal reasons, although I would be dishonest, if I didn’t say he was trying my patience, in his last season at Celtic.

He appears to quickly have became yesterday’s man and maybe he will end up like McCoist, working as a pundit in the U.K.

A thought I have ( obviously no evidence) I felt Neil, never owned anything, or very little, at best, that happened in his final year, a lot of finger pointing went on from Neil.

I wonder if that is puting off owners of clubs.

We all make mistakes, sometimes it’s important to own them.

I think history will be a lot kinder to Neil than we are, everything that could have gone wrong during the failed 10IAR did go wrong, and then some – pandemic no fans etc.

Neil found himself in the middle of a shit-storm last season and undoubtedly lost his way, now in hindsight, I think what happened to us as a club would last season have thrown any manager into disarray, including BR.

  3. GENE condolences on your brother James passing.

I’ll say a decade of the rosary for the repose of his soul.

Paul67 you continue with the abuse of BR

For no reason – why is that your subject today ??

What has BR done to attract your attention today ??

Perhaps PL is just pissed off that BR has made more money

BR was (and still is a top manager) we were fortunate to have him

The reason he left is because BRs ambition was greater than PLs imagination

Its disappointing you resort to slagging off a Celtic Manager who won us (more or less) 3 domestic trebles

  5. Gene,

Very sad news, I will say a prayer for James. May God give comfort to you all .

Ar Dheís Dé go raíbh a Anam Dílís,

  6. GENE, I’ve just been reading back, I am very sorry to hear of your brother’s passing. I’m now embarrassed about my juvenile moaning above in the face of what you and your family have gone through.

Thoughts and prayers to you and yours.

  7. Fans and Boards value football managers for only so long as they are successful. Success, in turn, attracts the attention of wealthier clubs which pay better. That’s why Man Utd almost secured Jock Stein’s services.

The converse is also true. One bad season and you can be shown the door – no matter any previous success. Fans are as ruthless as Boards. Support for managers is conditional. That condition is success.

Managers know they have a shelf life so it is little wonder that they put their own interests first.

I hear the sound of distant drums…

And I’m not talking about the wee guy fae the Green Brigade…..

I’m talking bout the big guy on the blower.

Mad as hell that he never wrote a cut in any future Brendan transfers……into the contract

Could be worth a few bob, specially wi the United job likely to be up for grabs later

Now that Ralf has resurrected the 1-2-2-2-2-2 formation at Ole Trafford

Reading back to discover the sad news of the loss of your brother. I had read a day or two back of his sudden illness but had hoped he would get the chance to recover, but it was not to be.

Condolences to you on the loss of James and to all family and friends.

    May he RIP
