Rodgers, revisionism and reticence

214

Brendan Rodgers did not last as long at Celtic as he now has at Leicester but the wheels came off the bogey far sooner in Glasgow.  His third season in the Midlands will not reach the heights or performance levels achieved earlier, but yesterday’s win over his former club, Liverpool, underlines his abilities.

The money on offer in Glasgow broke new records here but was a fraction of what was available across the EPL, or in China, where wages on offer in the summer of 2018 were lifechanging for someone already on a multimillion pound contract.

Revisionism is now a popular pastime when recounting Brendan’s era in Glasgow.  Having won the seven domestic trophies open to him, while qualifying for both Champions League group stages before that summer of 2018 pivot, he owed Celtic little, although honesty and frankness with the support is a prerequisite.  Creating crisis when you don’t get what you want is unworthy.

The biggest surprise for many is that he remains in Leicester after two and a bit successful seasons there and the same in Glasgow.  That’s five years throwing aces like an Aussie bowler.  In the last two years, Manchester United, Tottenham, Arsenal and Chelsea have all changed manager, Brendan was overlooked on each occasion.  Why?

‘It’s all about Brendan’ explains it.  He played the media and fans at both Liverpool and Celtic to his own ends, to the detriment of his employers.  Big clubs with choices will be reticenct to throw the dice with him.  If he is in the market again, he’ll be looking for the desperate, not the aspirational.

Post of the year, lets not forget when he was giving his cheesy smile tae the foxes fans David Low was tweeting about the cheering going on the the Celtic Boardroom, it seemed had had got too big for his boots, wold have never guessed.

I’d guess around 67- 68 or 68- 69 going from the strip. Home team changed in those days.

Looks like keeper could be Bent Martin, who left us for Dunfermline and played in goal against us at Celtic Park a couple of times. He was in goal for Dunfermline in the 68 cup final and played the day they knocked us out of the cup in 68.

I think Sorensen played for the hun in 67-68.

I think we wore green shorts in 66/67 season SS I remember all green kit in 67 games v Queen’s Park when Sean Connery was a Tim and also v Vodjvodina.

I think the white shorts were worn from 67-68 for a couple of seasons.

First impressions of Maeda are good.

Looks fast and can use both feet. Just what we need.

  5. Nothing is ever just about one thing so to say Rodgers is all about “me” [Rodgers] is incorrect. He is a football purist, a professional with high standards for everyone including himself. He has a strong sense of self worth, which is frowned upon in Scotland I’d say. He did brilliantly at Celtic but with no real rangers competition which takes the shine off things to some extent. His style (as now confirmed by Ange for those who need confirmation) requires a large squad as the intensity needs rotation. It also requires infusion of new blood every couple of years. BR realized that whatever he was told initially he wasn’t going to get the funds to match his ambitions at Celtic. He has done well at Leicester in a much more competitive league and has only recently suffered from a whole bunch of injured players. But still they’re nowhere near relegation and can still beat Liverpool. He’ll be challenging for a top six place before too long. The Board are as much to do with BR’s leaving, perhaps more so, than Rodgers’ ambitions. And don’t imagine he was expecting the kind of transfer kitty he could get in the EPL. He is an intelligent man and an intelligent coach.

  6. The standard of defending and especially the goalkeeping in that Maeda video is very very poor.

  7. Good Morning Celts – The Fiifth Day Of Christmas.

Of course reading Gene’s news puts things in perspective – my thoughts and prayers are with his family. May his Brother R.I.P.

On a different note I see the dog whistling against Brendan Rodgers, that started in 2018 has now become a full blown moon howl.

    :)))))))))

Ah mean where do you start with that.

Lets just take the end shall we!?

Big clubs with choices will be reticenct to throw the dice with him [Brendan Rodgers].  If he is in the market again, he’ll be looking for the desperate, not the aspirational.

    We’ll see…

I don’t believe the main thing that came out 2018 summer debacle, where the “John McGinn” tsunami made “Willo Flood” window look like a puddle, was the trashing of Brendan Rodgers’ reputation. Of course during that period and his subsequent time in Scotland it took a hit.

There were many aspects to why BR’s regime went a little “off the boil” and the knowledgable know class is permanent.

The surreptitious decision not to back BR by the Board after Odsonne’s loan deal had been made permanent, and the later “black ops” campaign to give the impression BR did a midnight flit with the whole of Celtic’s football department apart from the loyal few who rejected his avarice and bravely carried on regardless, didn’t help anyone of course.

Yet only a fool would believe the concocted Alamo Spirit nonsense now (creating crisis to get what you want is unworthy), no one connected in football would have believed it then.

Let’s get one thing straight shall we? Celtic football club at that time “employed” a fulltime football department, they also “employed” mainly a partime Board.

Both were in the employ of Celtic, neither had right to see themselves or define themselves as “Celtic”, certainly no individual came close.

The Celtic foundation and the Celtic support represent and are the heart blood of Celtic.

Some like to wrap themselves around those flags to give them credibility but this type of behaviour is unbecoming of the Celtic Tradition…

    Mathew Chapter Six…

“Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven.

2 “So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. 3 But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, 4 so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

No, those folk on retainers from the Celtic FC Coy are all paid employees – be very careful of all those who would; for profit, be you, represent you, they are by and large charlatans of one sort or other.

The Tommy Burns and Paul McStays of this world are few and far between and are forged in the white heat of a very precious alloy.

Having said that there are those “employees” who will strive for Celtic, of course they get their own rewards but if they are smart and many are, they will understand the win~win nature of football and understand that by striving as a team it creates a rising tide that lifts all ships.

They will represent Celtic as ambassadors to our long established traditions.

No PR multimedia stunts, no puddles, no tsunamis necessary – just striving for a rising tide.

Be wary of those who “aspire”, it was one of David Cameron’s favourite words to get buy-in from the disenfranchised.

I’ll not go over old arguments, they have been made and we are aided greatly by hindsight and no, not revisionism – facts have come out, performance established.

Brendan Rodgers’ and Peter Lawwell’s records will speak for themselves, the wise and discerning among us (and I’m gratified while reading this debate that is many), will see it as it is.

They will be glad to see Ange and so many of our players now “striving” for improvement.

Those on deludomal will continue to aspire.

    Happy Holidays & Hail Hail

  11. Indisputable facts about Brendan Rodgers:

    Under his tutelage,

    1. Celtic won Two consecutive Trebles and he set us on the road to a third consecutive Treble by winning the League Cup, establishing an eight point lead in the league and taking us to the Scottish Cup Quarter Final.

    2. He coached our players to a very high standard and established within them a relentless, winning mentality as well as a very high standard of fitness.

    3. He presided over some of the greatest humiliations of the foe malign on the football pitch: 5-1, 5-1, 4-0, 5-0.

For the above reasons, I will always consider him to be a Celtic Legend. Since the days of Jock Stein, we never had it so good. The retrospective sniping is absurd.

  12. I became friendly with the owner of the now gone Krazyhouse Disco in Liverpool.

    https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/news/liverpool-news/visited-12-former-nightclub-spots-17120800

The owner Howard and I drank in same bar in Spain, he was an interesting character and we got on well. He sadly passed away about 3 years ago but I remember him telling me soon after BR joined Celtic that he was untrustworthy and self centred.

That was not something I wanted to hear, but you do not start life as a joiner and become a millionaire owning the most popular disco in Liverpool through a love of music without having a nose for sniffing out the true nature of folk.

You cannot be reticent to throw a dice. Reticent is not synonymous with hesitant.

Hesitant is being reluctant to do something, like throwing a dice.

Reticent is a reluctance to speak, or generally reveal one’s feelings.

  16. Brendan will not be getting mentioned on Leicester sites as much as on here.Gie it a rest.Sound like jilted teenagers who have never got over it.What does it matter?
