Rodgers talks but he’s not telling the story

162

It has all worked out for Brendan Rodgers.  He could have fallen on his face at Leicester, instead, he sits second in the league, above Pep the Perfect, and is talked about for jobs in Manchester and North London.  As far as career development moves go, you have to hand it to him.  His next contract, which will come soon, is likely to be four times his rate at Celtic.

None of this justifies what he did.  Not the problems of his own creation in August last year, when he jeopardised our Champions League qualification efforts to create a faux exit narrative, nor leaving us with indiscreet haste, two days before a Premiership visit to Tynecastle and a weekend Scottish Cup-tie at Easter Road.  The move was right for him, which is all that mattered.

Maybe I’ve seen too many of them come and go to be bothered by it anymore.  Jock Stein knocked back Manchester United to remain at Celtic, but they are all careerists now, all of them.  It takes more than talent to make it to the top of the game.  You also need incredible commitment and a level of self-sacrifice that only comes if you are motivated to achieve personal success.  You will not go through the daily pain of training until your lungs burn and your body aches for thousands of people you may never meet, and who will occasionally shout abuse at you.

Yesterday he spoke to the press about his exit from Celtic.  I am happy to listen to his story but it is clearly too soon for him to be frank.  I’ll listen when he tells us why he was happy to throw away our Champions League qualification campaign to engineer an exit.

    SFTB,

I did predict he would not get any first choice recruits and would get mostly players he neither knew about or wanted. But you know that you were here.

“What a lot of revisionist pish”

    ——————‘

Charming, undoubtedly you have a way with words. 😁

I am grateful for what BR brought to Celtic and I was saddened to see him depart. I used the phrase ” The best fit Celtic manager ”

However and it is a big however , his failure to change from his idealistic style of football gave us humiliation in Europe. How did you not predict this ?

My mystic meg intuition tells me PL sussed Brendan Rodgers was leaving, sounded out his replacement, delivered his ready made replacement and got the club a managerial transfer record fee of £9m big smackers to boot.

    Hail Hail to all.

  5. Canamalar it looks like OCD obsession on

Oh and the last paragraph only prepares for the onslaught of coordinated pish that PL is organising.

He must be shitting himself if he had P67 feeding the useful idiots.

  6. It`s a pity Poppy Day is over….I think I preferrd the Poppy Debate to some of the playground bickering on here of late :-)).

Re Brendan Rodgers credentials as a Celtic Supporter.

Does the same logic apply to all supporters who have moved to parts of the world which make attendance unfeasible?

PS Just in case any of the Overseas Bhoys think that is a dig at them, it most certainly is not. It is a question of those who think BR cannot be a supporter if he left us for the EPL.

  7. Canamalar

“I suppose I was wrong about not getting any first choice since he got Edouard”

His First choices were Kolo Toure, Scott Sinclair, Dorus De Vries, Cristian Gamboa, Eboue Kouassi, Kundai Benyu, Jonny Hayes, Olivier N’tcham. Odsonne Edouard, Patrick Roberts, Marvin Comperr, Charly Musonda, Jack Hendry, Lewis Morgan and the return of Izzy.

I suppose you can excuse all the duds as having been thrust upon him by PL (Ntcham and Roberts came from the PL connected Man City stable, after all) but BR clearly chose Toure, De Vries and Gamboa and sanctioned Kouassi & Comperr.

The transfer market was not his strong point.

He was good in bringing on young players like Tierney, Edouard and Ajer, and in tweaking some aspects of Forrest’s play but his transfer touch was weak.

    Aff oot

  8. Canamalar

“Oh and the last paragraph only prepares for the onslaught of coordinated pish that PL is organising.”

Well I am glad you eventually noticed it but, remember, most of us were already aware that BR had given an interview to the Record. We had read about it on Newsnow. Many of us did not need Paul 67’s response to know what had been said.

In this case you got the motivation and the timing of events wrong. You’re losing that Accurate Prediction record you are claiming.

    Definitely out now

  9. Canamalar it looks like OCD obsession on

    Greenpinata,

I expect if BR has got the players he wanted he would not have had to change his style, he maintained that style to demonstrate that improving players he has will only go so far IMO.

I suggest that was part of his strategy to demonstrated to all who have an ounce of football that while the players are good players he wanted better for Celtic and was being impaired by restriction set by a bean counter that thinks he’s the director of football.

Remember Desmond had to bang their heads together at hampdump. It was a power struggle BR was never going to win since everyone he was dealing with was a PL placeman.

And that was the start of him being forced out the door by PL. So when you say PL sussed out he was leaving, of course he did it was by design ffs.

  10. Canamalar it looks like OCD obsession on

    SFTB,

So your saying there is no more to come then?

I’m suggesting this is just the start of it.

  11. Canamalar

Of course you might be accurate in your assessment of PL`s influence and of his power hungry character but would Dermot Desmond allow this if it adverely affecte HIS Company?

  12. The beery pontificatin’ of some shows some brass-neck.

Where civility costs nothin’…………………… some barred beery beacons of bhoyish bonhomie forget themselves as soon as they’ve dropped their change on the pub floor, too quick to turn and take the rowdy applause from the corner booth of Timdom. Small beer.

Jock Tamson’s Bar is always open and the beers and jeers are always on-tap.

An oul’ haun recently shared a considered insight that we should be wary of The Echo Chamber.

    Good advice.

As far as I can see That Echo Chamber has just staggered a couple of yards doon the road and up a wee side-street to abasement Dive in someone’s embittered imagination.

By the sounds of It, it would seem the inclusion of sweary words and PLC in every Celtic Song is a sign of Superior Celticness for an unlikey 7 or 8 – give or take a few binge-bloggers, the odd troll and sumbdy’s uncle in Idaho.

  14. Sorry, but this is taken from the Daily Ranger…

    …………..

Footage has emerged of Celtic fanatic Sir Rod Stewart leading a Hoops singalong alongside club chairman Ian Bankier and chief executive Peter Lawwell.

The clip, believed to have been filmed last week in Rome, shows the legendary crooner belting out the Irish folk ballad ‘Grace’ as he urges his fellow dinner guests to get involved.

Bankier, who is sitting on the left hand side of the 74-year-old, rises to his feet and joins in with Sir Rod as he chants the hit made famous by Jim McCann.

The camera pans around the room and Lawwell is visible as he also shows off his singing voice.

    ……..

Have Mr Lawell and Mr Bankier joined the Green Brigade ?

    Hot Smoked,

I’d suggest that BR being dragged into the dressing down that should have been directed at PL for not supporting the manager told BR all he needed to know about who DD would back if push came to shove, in those circumstances most with half a brain would start making exit plans, he made it clear the promises of support were not being honoured and he was told to deal with it.

That is not support it was a show of who rules the roost.

  19. It would be great to look forward, eh?

Have a great day contemplating further success in the Europa League, the Scottish League Cup, and the SPFL.

  20. BR and PL were on a collision course, we all knew that. But maybe the timing of the departure was agreed between the two of them for the simple reason that there was 9 million in compensation being offered at that time? PL was happy to gamble that NL would keepi us on track for a couple of months. It worked. And we were 9 million better off because of it.

Move on everyone, it has worked out well for all concerned.

As for John Kennedy to Hibs – the guy has taken a huge amount of stick on here over the past few years. He got it in the neck for being a mole and a snitch. His coaching skills were, constantly questioned – as in, “what does he actually do?” He got blamed for our defensive frailties and for the lack of learning apparent at set pieces etc.

If he goes to Hibs, good luck to him. I hope he makes a success of it. He deserves his chance. A tough gig to take on mid-season though.

Think it was kikinthenakas who suggested br was a narcissist .bang on

When it started there was synergy

Both Celtic and br profile was raised.

When you are in the position br was in you have to have an ego, know your good, and let those who work off you,see that your good.

He transformed plenty at our club.he was part of our history and that’s how I recall him.

It’s gone now.thanks and best of luck to you as a free market operator.

  25. BR Has gone out of his way to say what a good relationship he had with the Board. To quote Mandy Rice-Davies you might say well he would say that , wouldn’t he. Whether he had or he hadn’t I think it’s fair to assume that there were tensions between BR & Pedro, and that in itself is not a bad thing. It is the norm in most successful Businesses.

However It is wrong in my opinion to attribute all the success to one party & all the failures to the other.

BR is undoubtedly a top class Manager, he had a good pedigree before he joined us, did extremely well while he was with us and is currently doing extremely well with Leicester.

It is also a fact that we recruited more than our fair share of duds under his stewardship.

This year the pre seaon recruitment under Lenny is looking a lot more inspired.

My reading is that Brendan simply saw Celtic as an ideal stepping stone to get back into top EPL Management. He may well have had an emotional attachment to us as well but that was never going to deflect him from his preferred career path.

At one level, you can’t blame him but with all the Celtic love stuff he trotted out while he was at Celtic Park, the sense of betrayal at the timing of his departure was huge.

Personally I don’t give a shit about him now, he has moved on and so have I.

“I don’t see it as a stepping stone. For me, I’m living the dream being the Celtic manager.”

Leaves Celtic on a Tuesday before Celtic have a crucial double-header away to Hearts and then Hibs. Putting the treble at risk.

I agree with your criticism of the board on other issues but Brendan Rodgers is a duplicitous philanderer.

    Not to be trusted.

  27. CANAMALAR – I agree that Paul opened the discussion, my point was to him as much as anyone else. There is a “blame BR” narrative which has existed since he left. All I am saying is that two egos were at loggerheads and the 9 million compensation deal suited both parties and allowed everyone to move on.

The media are always looking to ask ex-players and managers to dish the dirt on their time here. BR would be better served saying nothing, as it won’t change anything.

I look at it from the idea of how much shite did he have to put up with to drive him from his dream job?

I also doubt very much it is/was his dream job but I suspect had he been backed he would likely still be at Celtic

  30. “Duplicitous philanderer”Brilliant.

Another of the same ilk, informing us today that Kamara who you might say is now valued in some quarters, not these ones at £8 million.
