Rogic, Benkovic, Simunovic

235

So what went right?  Tom Rogic was back to his imposing best, using his frame to hold-off opponents, while delicately pinging balls into the box to create clear goal-scoring chances.  When he faded, Celtic faded.  There will be games ahead when we need Scott Brown (Murrayfield, Ibrox), but he was not missed yesterday.  Using the skipper more sparingly is something we should be prepared to contemplate.  He is 33-years-old and has enjoyed good fitness for two years, but we cannot take this for granted.

James Forrest needs space to fully utilise his talents and he found acres of it at McDiarmid Park.  On this form, in this space, he is unstoppable.  Danny Swanson’s lunge at James’ ankles was payback for earlier punishment.  There were no legal ways to stop the Celtic winger.  It is early, but there are signs Odsonne Eduard has recovered confidence.  I noticed an uplift after he struck the bar with a shot against Aberdeen a week ago, the opener in Salzburg and yesterday’s second indicates the player is back on form.

Those saying St Johnstone were poor are correct, but you can only beat the team in front of you and Celtic managed this in near historic quantities, despite kicking off only 67 hours after leaving the field in Austria.  This could be the last time for some months we see a Scottish team be bold enough to create two attempts on target in the opening minutes of a game.

The six goal thrashing aside, the return to action of Filip Benkovic and Jozo Simunovic was a major boost.  Jozo has had his moments, but both are comfortable on the ball and will be needed in the months ahead.  We have been relatively solid defensively this season, but getting it right at the back contributes to more than just goals against.

  1. JOBO BALDIE – Each to their own. As a youngster I went to the World Cups in Spain and Italy to support Scotland but over the last decade or so I feel no connection with the national team whatsoever. This is partly due to my hatred of the blazers at the SFA and the damage they try to do to Celtic at every turn while supporting Sevco. It is also partly due to a feeling that international football is no longer that important and maybe just a bit to do with the fact we have been utter mince for 20 years :)

  2. Well done Griff in showing priorities.

Last week i said that Lee as the front man only works if the players attacked the space he creates by drifting wide

Edouard and JF gave a masterclass in this yesterday.

On the first goal Lee starts in centre of field and drifts wide right as James cuts in diagonally to shoot from space created.

On Ed’s goal he was in the centre slight right waiting to tap in if goalie had saved and also created channel for ED to shoot at as they could not leave him to block.

On the third with Rogic and Jf’s intricate passing he went wide right leaving space in centre for them to run into.

On the fourth he had come deep.

On the fifth Lee starts in centre then pulls left to leave the space James runs into and scores from.

When a goalscorer does not appear on the scoresheet people including i wonder if they had a poor game.

But Lee contributed to 4 of six goals so was a great contributor to the victory.

Talking of which, anyone remember the 80s when Liverpool’s Scottish players always pulled out of Scotland squads? Souness and Hansen were masters of it and Souness did the same when managing rangers, pulled players out to get them to focus on domestic games.

*that’s when the national team doctor and deidco’s were the same, niggly wee injury that was ok by the weekend.

  4. Brendan Rodgers also insisted there is no rift with chief executive Peter Lawell or majority shareholder Dermot Desmond.

He said: “I’ve got a really good relationship with Dermot, Peter and all the board.

“We don’t always agree, but that’s healthy and good. Our relationship is very strong. The supporters are amazing and we’re all very much together.”

Rodgers also distanced himself from speculation Aston Villa wanted him to replace Steve Bruce, who was sacked by the Championship strugglers last week.

Asked if the Midlands outfit, who snatched Hoops target John McGinn from Hibs in August, had made contact with Celtic, he replied: “No, I don’t believe so.

“At this point in time, I think there’s probably about 20 names that will be thrown in the hat.

“Aston Villa is one of the biggest clubs in Britain, in the Championship, of course, but it really is a Premier League club that will want to get back in there as quickly as they can.

“I’m sure they’ll get a manager that fits for them, but, for me, I’ve got a big job to do here at Celtic.

“I love my time and my life here and this season we want to go and push on.”

STOP DWELLING’ Aberdeen chairman Stewart Milne backs SFA’s decision to reject independent review of the Rangers ‘EBT’ saga

He reiterated his stance on the issue as the Scottish Football Supporters Association hit out at the game’s governing body for ‘avoiding scrutiny’

So in one breath he wants cheating to be swept aside but now something has went against Aberdeen he’s up in arms.

    Geez peace ya clown.

  6. Robbie Neilson, apparently being named as the next manager at Dundee United, another bad appointment,I’m sure Jim McIntyre would have been a better choice.

  7. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

Deniabhoy – more recently I remember when Richard Gough was unavailable as he couldn’t be risked playing two games a week (back in the days of 36 league games) until …. ahem … Old Rangers played two games in a week.

Think the suggestion of Hendry getting game time on the SFA dime is a good one as is the withdrawal of KT, CMcG and JF.

Unpatriotic I know but, for me, this is an SFA select.

If it were a credible national team at the top of the country’s footballing pyramid – heads would have rolled at the SFA when we failed to qualify in 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2008, 2010, 2012, 2014, 2016 and 2018.

  8. Just saw themonkeyhun highlights from yesterday………Jeeeeeeeezo

By using today’s technology (simply pausing my video) the free kick leading to their first goal CLEARLY showed 4 in an offside position.

Might be a season like 2011 with the Mibs.

I too spent this morning looking at the first goal frame by frame. In real time I was sure they were offside from the initial ball in; and if not then, then certainly when Morelos played the ball left to the . No offside, unfortunately.

  11. Hi Bhoys

I don’t think the huns first goal was offside and it still would have been a goal if they were.

    We weren’t paranoid enough.

    KEEP THE FAITH

  12. Jobo

I’m sure it was the linesman who missed the handball against ICT, who gave a penalty for Hibs in a semi, who missed the elbow on KT in the cup final against Aberdeen and other incidents, it looked well offside to me.

  13. Dessybhoy – it looked a mile offside to me when I first saw it. But when I paused and analysed myself I was astonished to find that there was no offside. Very close right enough but nevertheless an unfortunate correct decision.

  14. If the SFA want Celtic players to be available for international games, perhaps they can instruct their match officials to stop encouraging other teams to assaulting them each week.

So Milne wants a summit about the controversial decisions?

I’ve got a better idea Stewarty boy – why don’t we just “move on”? Just “move on for the good of the game”?

  19. Followed up by trashing LG….I really wish we had a proper Media Officer,to sort these clowns out.

  20. Ah mean, you’ve got to laugh.

Stuart Milne walked away from the biggest scandal in history, by wanting to move on ???

Stuart Milne, didny by any £49 Old Firm same club lie tickets.

Stuart Milne, didny order his PLC board to, sneakily construct a £49 Sevco FC / Rangers FC, same club, buy the tickets and the PLC board are off the hook, in terms of dealing with the same club issue’s, type of trap to spring on his supporters whilst their all looking the other way, blindsided by the Brendan bounce, no he didny, unlike the sleakit, complicit, Celtic PLC board.

The only thing that, Celtic and Aberdeen have got in common is, that they are both followed by sheep.

  21. Paul67 et al

Though never a supporter of any kind of “Premium League”, in Scotland or elsewhere, I do not recall any clamour for the merging of the SPL and the SFL, although I belatedly realised that the new SPFL, (hailed on this blog if I remember correctly) was created to ensure that Sevco were part of the same organisation as Celtic FC. It avoided the possibility of Sevco being refused entry into the SPL. Maybe that is what was in it for Celtic too, otherwise why trade one of ten/twelve to one in forty. But despite the support of Paul67 on here, and Peter Lawwell over there, just how does the SPFL benefit Celtic? Forget any bollocks about a new “professionalism”, or Neil Doncaster, (the man who personally bequested league titles and league cups to RIFC), recent events have shown otherwise. Neither the SFA nor the SPFL can be trusted on good governance, a decent TV deal, on fair refereeing, or a disciplinary system that treats all clubs and players equally as opposed to favouring one formed in 2012. Milne has never, or at least up until now, held any contrary view, maybe the Dons fans are getting to him, if so well done them!

  22. GlassTwoThirdsFull on

“We simply must have consistency and transparency”.

Errr, like consistency in filing players payment documents?

Or maybe transparency in admitting clubs into the league?

    Clown!

I’m not sure. It could be messy.

They would probably just merge into a large lump of undulating blubber.

  24. Even if the huns were not offside on initial pass the goalscorer clearly was when he received the forward pass as he was ahead of passer with only Hearts player being within 20 ft the goalie.

Was the linesman to busy cheering to raise his flag?

Funny that they do not have any side on camera angles?

Was this because it showed the linesman jumping into crowd to celebrate.

The cheating has been revved up this season as operation we are the people has been backed by football authorities and refs.

  25. How any Celtic supporter can support Scotland is beyond me. A bunch of cheats, bigots and rotten to the core, check their past form for years, how many caps did Jinky get???? Every time they play I want to see them humped.
