Rogic, Benkovic, Simunovic

235

So what went right?  Tom Rogic was back to his imposing best, using his frame to hold-off opponents, while delicately pinging balls into the box to create clear goal-scoring chances.  When he faded, Celtic faded.  There will be games ahead when we need Scott Brown (Murrayfield, Ibrox), but he was not missed yesterday.  Using the skipper more sparingly is something we should be prepared to contemplate.  He is 33-years-old and has enjoyed good fitness for two years, but we cannot take this for granted.

James Forrest needs space to fully utilise his talents and he found acres of it at McDiarmid Park.  On this form, in this space, he is unstoppable.  Danny Swanson’s lunge at James’ ankles was payback for earlier punishment.  There were no legal ways to stop the Celtic winger.  It is early, but there are signs Odsonne Eduard has recovered confidence.  I noticed an uplift after he struck the bar with a shot against Aberdeen a week ago, the opener in Salzburg and yesterday’s second indicates the player is back on form.

Those saying St Johnstone were poor are correct, but you can only beat the team in front of you and Celtic managed this in near historic quantities, despite kicking off only 67 hours after leaving the field in Austria.  This could be the last time for some months we see a Scottish team be bold enough to create two attempts on target in the opening minutes of a game.

The six goal thrashing aside, the return to action of Filip Benkovic and Jozo Simunovic was a major boost.  Jozo has had his moments, but both are comfortable on the ball and will be needed in the months ahead.  We have been relatively solid defensively this season, but getting it right at the back contributes to more than just goals against.

  2. The reason Aberdeen don’t charge £49 to see Sevco is because tight Aberdonians wouldn’t pay £49 quid to see anyone play fitba’.

That and the fact that they seldom sell-out any game at ‘todders, including Celtic and Sevco.

But don’t let facts get in the way of having a go at Celtic fans. ?

Well done Griff in showing priorities.

Last week i said that Lee as the front man only works if the players attacked the space he creates by drifting wide

Edouard and JF gave a masterclass in this yesterday.

On the first goal Lee starts in centre of field and drifts wide right as James cuts in diagonally to shoot from space created.

On Ed’s goal he was in the centre slight right waiting to tap in if goalie had saved and also created channel for ED to shoot at as they could not leave him to block.

On the third with Rogic and Jf’s intricate passing he went wide right leaving space in centre for them to run into.

On the fourth he had come deep.

On the fifth Lee starts in centre then pulls left to leave the space James runs into and scores from.

When a goalscorer does not appear on the scoresheet people including i wonder if they had a poor game.

But Lee contributed to 4 of six goals so was a great contributor to the victory.

A good post, I look out for your words of wisdom football wise.

Seriously these guys destroy any notion that we’re involved in a proper Sport.

  6. Well done Leigh Griffiths, unlike Stewart Milne you’ve got your priorities right, gone even further up in my estimations.

Prayers for the wee fella ahead of tomorrow, and also to extended family.

Tough choices for LMS 11 this week – and a surprisingly small group of teams picked so far – but due to the nature of the competition (Nations League), teams of similar ability are grouped together, leading to games which are much more difficult to predict. No more France v Andorra type fixtures, and virtually every game over the course of the weekend could go either way ( or even end in a draw ).

Anyway, thanks to those who have made their picks so far, and remember, first games are on Thursday, so don’t forget and make sure your entry arrives before kick-off time. ?

  10. Scott Brown – it doesn’t matter how experienced you are, how many games you’ve played and what you’ve achieved in the game. When you sit in the stand and watch your teammates who’ve struggled to score all season batter in 6 goals going on 10, it must make you wonder if you’re part of the problem. Similarly the coaching team will analyse what happened yesterday as opposed to what has gone on before to look for anything different.

Yesterday St Johnstone were wide open, they used a passing style that wasn’t like them which definitely contributed to their downfall. They looked to be a man light at the back, ironically this could have been due to them deciding have a go as Brown wasn’t there. On a big wide open pitch it was shooty in. We can’t expect to play against that every week and on a similar surface.

From our perspective we definitely stepped it up, the pressing was there, the passing and movement was slick and finishing ruthless.

Combine all of the above and you get 0-6. My assessment overall would be that Brown was less than 10% of the difference, it was more to do with a poor St Johnstone and an improved Celtic in an attacking sense. However it will maybe bring about a small change in the positions Brown takes up and the way he uses the ball. I do think he is too deep at times and I’ve heard others say this affects the positioning of others, particularly the other midfielders. How things play out going forward only time will tell but it’s an interesting one.

The choice of 2 players Nt’cham and McG to sit deeper had a few effects.

They both made themselves available for an outlet pass giving the defense more options.

Normally everyone leaves it to Brown and opponents know this and close him quickly often resulting in sideways or back passes.

The spacing between units was more cohesive with this formation and Rogic was link to the front.

His forward passing was excellent but i think he was encouraged in knowing that the space behind him was controlled by the two mids and a defense playing closer to them.

Also i often feel when he and McG play together they often take space away from each other and yesterday he had more space for his vision to be effective.

The off the ball movement of Griff,Edouard and JF also made a difference.

I love Brown so do not think he is responsible for the recent malaise.

A better tactical plan and formation was the difference.

Hello again all you young rebels.

Had a look at that Ragers goal there and four huns looked offside

when the ball left the kickers foot,, but we know the fix is in, as

long as Celtic play confident forward passing football like yesterday

it will be great to get the eight,

Great weekend as usual down the peninsula with hundreds of

Conor MacGregor fans in rebel town joined up with most of our csc

bhoys, it was like a St Patricks day Celebration with tricolours and

    hoopy tops everywhere.

I’m not a great fan of the cage fighting thingy, prefer the noble art

of boxing, and i thought the Russian guy was like an octopus with

his legs wrapped round Conor for most of the fight.

I’m sure he will have learned from that defeat and keep him at a

punching distance next big moneybags fight.
