Rogic, defending, Derk, Ability Counts

522

Whatever maligned Celtic during the recent dark days when they dropped points to Hamilton and Dundee has cleared up. Hearts made the very best of a chance in the opening minutes on Saturday but the response was swift and conclusive.

Patrick Roberts deservedly picked up the accolades for his goals but the contribution of Tom Rogic should not go unrecorded. In creating the second goal he demonstrated ball-winning skills and creativity, a priceless package for a midfield player. Let’s hope he’s over his head knock for tomorrow night.

Mention should also go to Stefan Johansen, who played the deep-lying midfield role until Rogic went off, when he moved into the advanced position. His blind flick onto Roberts at the third goal was sublime.

The most pertinent comment I heard on Saturday was “It’s good to have the goalkeeper making saves again”. Craig Gordon appears to have his confidence back, perhaps as a consequence of the defence performing better.

For most of the second half Celtic defended more deeply than we’ve seen throughout the league campaign. With a two goal advantage, Griffiths and Johansen were asked to run into space, while the rest of the midfield became compact. As a consequence, Hearts had plenty of the ball, and created a few half chances, but they never carved Celtic open.

Had we been that compact during the European qualifiers our season could have been different.

There’s a process I go through when we sign a new foreign player: do I add his name to the spellcheck or not? I decided long ago I wasn’t prepared to pollute my dictionary with the names of transient players. Derk Boerrigter’s name still appears with wavy lines below in my word processor three years after his arrival.

His name will go down in Celtic annuls alongside Rafael Scheidt. We spent millions on them, they both went down with innocuous injury moments after starting for Celtic and that was pretty much that. In his opening 30 minutes for Celtic, Derk produced evidence that there was a football player hiding inside his psyche, but he soon found the rigors of the professional game too challenging.

He leaves Scotland with millions in his bank account and with a lot of frustrated people at Lennoxtown.

Did you read during the week that the Association of Irish Celtic Supporters’ Clubs raised €500 for the Foundation’s Ability Counts Ireland Project? The Ability Counts Project offers children with Downs opportunities to develop motor skills and team-working through football and dance. This is one small frontline of all the fundraising, badges, buckets, zip wires and dinners Celtic fans participate in.

It’s an important part of the relationship thousands of us have as Celtic supporters.

Consider getting involved. The Foundation is holding a H.E.L.P. Pilgrimage on Bank Holiday Monday, 30 May. Participants will walk the 17 miles between St Mary’s, Calton, Barrowfield, the Jimmy Johnstone statue and gardens at Viewpark and back to Celtic Park.

A 17 mile walk is no small feat, but most feet are capable of it, so get involved here.

  8. A great post in one of JJ articles

Dave King is indeed small beer when it comes to the world of international finance. No one of repute would touch this felon with the proverbial. Except, of course, his sidekicks, Paul Murray and Richard Gough.

But no one of stature, quality, class and integrity.

SDM thought that Christmas has come early when King ‘gifted’ him £20m. Who was this man? Where did this come from? Well, SDM didn’t care. He grabbed the gift and in return gave King a blazer, tie and two soft seats in the Directors box. One for King. The other for King’s mum. Really. I am not making it up.

Did the club benefit and is there an audit trail to demonstrate precisely HOW the club benefitted? No, of course there isn’t.

You mention ENIC. This investment vehicle is run, as you know, by a serious financial player, Joe Lewis. The ENIC Group put £40m into Rangers in 1996 in return for a 20.2% stake in the club. This was a rare error of judgement on the part of the shrewd Lewis. He had fallen for SDM’s lies and spin about playing at the top levels of English football.

A couple of Board seats came with the stake in the club.

It didn’t work out. Lewis put a couple of top quality guys on the Board in an attempt to enhance their £40m stake. The ENIC guys could scarcely believe SDM’s fiscal carnage and disregard for corporate governance.

By 2001, they wanted out. Their stake in the club had collapsed. The ENIC Board members resigned from the Ibrox Board in an atmosphere of acrimony and bitterness.

These ENIC professionals realised that SDM was no more than a gambler who talked a good game. His favourite line was……”I own Glasgow Rangers. What a f#####g calling card that is”. They saw him as a chancer who was one dimensional. And that dimension was his knowledge of driving a horse and cart through accounting legislation.

I became aware that Lewis wanted to sell in early 2004. The shares had been available for three years. No one wanted them on the basis of…….”if Joe Lewis wants out, don’t touch them”. There was NO interest.

But Joe, who by now despised SDM, started calling up his network of chums. He would offer the 20.2% stake, plus two Board seats, for virtually nothing! The two Board seats would frighten SDM into a panic buy back because the last thing he wanted was transparency.

A colleague expressed modest interest to ENIC. This was relayed to SDM who bought back the shares in a panic. He bought them in the summer of 2004 for £8.9m. ENIC lost £30m plus loose change.

Between the criminal King and the normally astute Lewis, this lost ‘investment’ represents a colossal amount of funds which have simply disappeared.

The lessons from SDM’s disastrous stewardship have not been heeded.

Rangers represents a small turnover business which has no consideration for corporate governance, prudence nor standards of excellence.

  9. Lest we forget! Or dare to damn with faint praise.

MON did well against an outrageously unsustainable Rangers at that time.

Despite 55,000+ average crowds, the Larsson factor, close rivalry domestically and a chance at europe each year the business was losing huge amounts and on 2 occasions had to go back to the fans / shareholders for funds. The actual football was not pretty then either.

The current strategy has merit but is not being well executed or backed or more importantly communicated.

    Sorry for delay.

    BRTH, you say, “Kill Ultra

I understand why you signed up to the resolution, but the actual words of the resolution were to have the Celtic board take the entire situation to UEFA/CFCB and initially it looked as if what would happen would be exactly as you had anticipated — namely that there would have been a right good barney in the Kerrydale with the board saying they had taken this up with the SFA etc and shareholders yelling at them telling them they had not done enough, that Rangers had cheated and so on and so forth.”

You don’t give reasons for AGM Resolution 12 adjournments, 2014 and 2015. The circumstances in these years differ from 2013, and from each other.

BRTH, you say, “….to have the Celtic board take the entire situation to UEFA/CFCB”

It didn’t happen. As for ‘a right good barney’, I’m sure the board would have been quite happy had that occurred. The plc positively welcomes internecine strife; it provides the divide-and-rule distraction it needs to pursue its Old Firm business reconstruction.

BRTH, you say: “Since then, the board have started to have other meetings where they explain policy, business decisions and all that sort of stuff but they are select in who they invite to such meetings. They write to the CSA, CST and others and get them in. Personally I think there is a better way to do that but hey that is just my personal opinion.”

Surely the fact that you have a direct line to club secretary, Michael Nicholson is preferable.

BRTH, you say, “Any debate on the board pursuing a financial policy which involves gearing towards the benefits of playing a Rangers team in future is a separate issue to Res 12 …”

A separate issue? Really? The two issues are inextricably linked, and you know it.

BRTH. I’m pressed for time, so apologies for not elaborating on my concerns about accountability, financial probity, etc., in the ongoing pursuit of Res 12 (okay, I know you prefer to be known it as such). I’ll try and post later about this.

See if….Celtic were being ‘controlled’ by a, DD who was a Celtic supporter-Tim when MO’N was in charge, Seville or, the likes of it would have been top of the list to be achieved each season after that.

Be cute – get into the CL group stages, get the money pot but….crucially….finish 3rd in the group, go into EL and, aim to win it!

Then, and only then….could Celtic begin to look at the ko-stages of the CL….once we’d achieved that ‘stock’ of being, Euro trophy winners in the colour TV era.

DD should have been out after Seville claiming that, Uefa have seen for themselve’s the ‘marvel’ that is the Celtic support….we want, the top level of the game to now see, just how ‘Gigantic’ that support will make the club look in the eyes of the CL aristocracy.

If, I had been a billionaire in control of Celtic – I’d want my era to be ‘immortalized’ by the Celtic support of generations to come when they’ll go all dewy eyed when the recall – The KevJungle Golden Celtic Era.
