Rogic, defending, Derk, Ability Counts

522

Whatever maligned Celtic during the recent dark days when they dropped points to Hamilton and Dundee has cleared up. Hearts made the very best of a chance in the opening minutes on Saturday but the response was swift and conclusive.

Patrick Roberts deservedly picked up the accolades for his goals but the contribution of Tom Rogic should not go unrecorded. In creating the second goal he demonstrated ball-winning skills and creativity, a priceless package for a midfield player. Let’s hope he’s over his head knock for tomorrow night.

Mention should also go to Stefan Johansen, who played the deep-lying midfield role until Rogic went off, when he moved into the advanced position. His blind flick onto Roberts at the third goal was sublime.

The most pertinent comment I heard on Saturday was “It’s good to have the goalkeeper making saves again”. Craig Gordon appears to have his confidence back, perhaps as a consequence of the defence performing better.

For most of the second half Celtic defended more deeply than we’ve seen throughout the league campaign. With a two goal advantage, Griffiths and Johansen were asked to run into space, while the rest of the midfield became compact. As a consequence, Hearts had plenty of the ball, and created a few half chances, but they never carved Celtic open.

Had we been that compact during the European qualifiers our season could have been different.

There’s a process I go through when we sign a new foreign player: do I add his name to the spellcheck or not? I decided long ago I wasn’t prepared to pollute my dictionary with the names of transient players. Derk Boerrigter’s name still appears with wavy lines below in my word processor three years after his arrival.

His name will go down in Celtic annuls alongside Rafael Scheidt. We spent millions on them, they both went down with innocuous injury moments after starting for Celtic and that was pretty much that. In his opening 30 minutes for Celtic, Derk produced evidence that there was a football player hiding inside his psyche, but he soon found the rigors of the professional game too challenging.

He leaves Scotland with millions in his bank account and with a lot of frustrated people at Lennoxtown.

Did you read during the week that the Association of Irish Celtic Supporters’ Clubs raised €500 for the Foundation’s Ability Counts Ireland Project? The Ability Counts Project offers children with Downs opportunities to develop motor skills and team-working through football and dance. This is one small frontline of all the fundraising, badges, buckets, zip wires and dinners Celtic fans participate in.

It’s an important part of the relationship thousands of us have as Celtic supporters.

Consider getting involved. The Foundation is holding a H.E.L.P. Pilgrimage on Bank Holiday Monday, 30 May. Participants will walk the 17 miles between St Mary’s, Calton, Barrowfield, the Jimmy Johnstone statue and gardens at Viewpark and back to Celtic Park.

A 17 mile walk is no small feat, but most feet are capable of it, so get involved here.

New thread up since. Just to reply to TBJ on previous, thanks for that. Of course, Steven Craven is the man. Iirc for telling the truth about Dougie and the SFA he was barred for life from all football in bonny Scotland. He was then reported officiating in a Sunday league game and barred from that as well. Nice people at the SFA. The point I was making with Charlie Richmond was that he was given few match appointments.

In an interview at the time, he revealed that when he asked why, a SFA functionary told him he didn’t take part in “activities” with the rest of the boys, and so did not fit in. Charlie has remained tight lipped since. I just wonder what “activities” the rest of “the boys” take part in. I hope Charlie speaks out.

When I’m watching those kinds of games I often think “Just give them the ball” – my logic being that the opposition will need to do something with it, commit themselves and made the kind of mistake that allows us to capitalise.

Ronny confirms Patrick here for the full 1.5 years. MSM will be hacked off. Strange as they keep moaning about not having the quality players we used to have. Now one comes along and they want him gone after a few games.

Wouldn’t have anything to do with who he plays for would it?

I think Inzaghi was announced today (don’t quote me as I frequently incorrect) I remember Simone Inzaghi playing for Lazio, loved Gazzetta del la sport on a Saturday morning, only downside was when the other Gazza joined the dark side, James Richardson was/is a pretty good pundit

Kind of agree with you Musters. I think Johannson was better when he took on R.ogics role. Still feel that we cant afford to play 2 wingers. Rogic would do better if he had solid midfield behind him.

But hey what do I know the goals on Saturday were scored by who?

Im planning to visit Dundee tmorra any spare tickets for me and the boy would be appreciated.

A pal was at a SIMBA Charity night on Saturday at a chapel hall in Uddingston,Kris & Lisa Commons were there to support a cause close to their hearts. Punters were taking a shot of sliding a pound coin nearest the magnum of Prosecco. Kris had 2 tries and was nowhere near it,3rd and final go,Kris stands the pound coin on its edge, steps forward and strokes the coin with his left foot………. It runs the 20 odd yards, and hits the bottle!! Cue mayhem and celebrations all round,I have seen the video of it,I will try and get it and post it.

As he felt posted in Benalmedina Loopy’s is the bar you will get the Celtic game in.

If Auldhead is in Benalmedena at that time that is where he watches the games.

It is on the main bus route from fuengerola drops you off right accross the road and picks you up outside it.

Its also across from what they call 24 hour square.

If you go by train its off at Benalmedina and down the big long hill and turn left ,up to 24 hour square then accross the road.

  10. From today’s Herald.

What is more excusable are his apparent bouts of “sectarianism”. For example, pretending to play a flute while a Rangers player is hardly the crime of the century, particularly because of who we are talking about here.

Just a few weeks ago, while off the drink, he was invited to a Rangers Supporters do in Irvine where he was filmed singing along to Simply the Best, complete with additional lines “F*** the Pope and the IRA.”

He was also photographed with former UFF leader Johnny “Mad Dog” Adair. It was that kind of a night.

Now. What if that had been AS?

    Musters,

I agree with you, but, if Rogic is not played high up the park, then he shouldn’t be played. That is where he does his best work, both in passing and shooting.

In the second half, especially after the third goal, we tightened the midfield with Biton sitting.

This both left Brown not as exposed, as his pace and drive are missing at the moment, and also allowed Johansen to forage up front with Leighandowski, with support from Roberts and GMS, until he understandably tired.

Looking at highlights, our central defence looked their static and disorganised when the ball came into the box.

With a half decent finisher, Hearts could have had us in serious trouble.

  18. glendalystonsils on

I can see tomorrow’s game being similar to the Hearts game. Dundee like to play attacking football and are unlikely to park the bus, given that their defence makes our sieve look like the Berlin wall.

Space for young Patrick , GMS and Griff to exploit.

We will not find it easy (certainly not as easy as Sevco did in that inexplicable cup tie at crumbledome)

but if we are properly prepared , we should collect 3 points with a couple of goals to spare.

thomthethim for Oscar OK, if we had taken our own chances we could have been out of sight in the 1st half.

glendalystonsils, no way will Dundee give us the same game as Hearts did. It wasn’t that long ago we played them at Celtic Park and they were happy to sit in and frustrate us, I think they’ll set up in a similar fashion to that night. If Dundee set up the way they did against Sevco we’ll run amok.

  22. Tomorrow night we head up to the City of Discovery where we have the opportunity of increasing our lead in the quest for 5-in-a-row. This is no mean feat BTW and only 2 clubs have achieved this, ourselves (2) and Steau Glasgow (2).

However, let’s be cognizant to the fact that the eyes of the MSM will be follow following a lower league club who in its infancy will be doing a Gretna and striving to clinch promotion to join the “big” teams with a victory over a team that their deceased shared its 1st tainted title with 125 cheating years ago, a team that they put 6 by earlier this year down at the Cheaper Insurance Direct Stadium.

Look out for a 12 page spreads on Wednesday morning on the “journey”, in fact it will continue all week up to the minor cup final. Incidentally, WTF is there a game on at the dilapidated national stadium between 2 lower tier sides the weekend before the crown jewel of Scottish Footballs semi finals. If I was paranoid if would say it was tae give sevco’s players a feel for the pitch and stadium.

Meanwhile 2 of the “big” teams engage in a game that is important to both, ours for the reasons already stated and the home of the world’s worst poet strive to make the lucrative top six.

We should have no fear of a team that after drawing 0-0 with us at Parkheid have contrived tae be humiliated 0-4 tae sevco, lose at home tae the jambos, drop a 2 goal lead to their cross street rivals and although they gubbed Roman County on Saturday they still have conceded 9 goals in their last 4 games. Incidentally the side they dropped 4 to in the cup have given up 10 goals in their last 4 games.

So no excuses bhoys, we have a potential 9 games left to complete the double.

A huge pre season coming up for him now. As he really has to stay fit, then hopefully get out on loan for a season. I would think that he will be allowed to go out on loan next season as he, at this moment, is now further down the pecking order. Fingers crossed.

    Hail Hail.
