Rogic endorsement of direction of travel

538

Tom Rogic is good.  Very good.  He has scored cup winning goals, league winning goals, scored against Newco at three different venues, and most deliciously, has scored Champions League qualification goals.  That old football adage, “Yes, but can he do it when it really matters?”, is never asked about Tom.

With one year left on his existing Celtic contract, he is off with Australia to the World Cup, the most prominent shop window in the game, where good players with a one-year balance on their contracts are a premium.

The news that he signed a five-year contract yesterday has surprised many, including me.  One week ago today, when I asked a ‘senior source at Celtic’ the prospects or retaining his services, I was not encouraged.  “The money on offer in England……..”

This deal is an endorsement of the direction the club is heading from within the dressing room.  Players know where the club is going, Tom knows.  That’s why he has signed.  I am sure his contract reflects his ability, but I am also sure he could have earned more elsewhere.  And five years!!  That’s nearly a Jim McLean!

Good luck tomorrow, Tom, let’s have a repeat of last season’s Cup Final.

I’ve only looked at the start of the season but out of 9 starts, Tom Rogic was only subbed twice.

  2. SAINT STIVS

Rogic came on for KT after about half an hour after he got gubbed by that no name thug.

Mind you his goal in the 93rd minute was worth the wait!

Aye but he did nothing for the last 23 minutes ………………

I agree with your sentiments about the stupidity of the Rangers support and the idea that there are people who should know better than to accept the spin from Ibrox.

We have laughed at them and told them where they are going wrong and they won’t listen. They think we are point scoring. Their Business acumen goes out the window when talking about Rangers.

Well I agree, I just listen to them and massage their egos. We should not give them any advice particularly good advise. We should build up their hope and that’s what kills them when it all falls apart. No Tim should offer them advice but merely be quiet smile and build up their hope.

They believe that having Gerrard as manager will transform their rubbish players into gold. They believe that players will join them for little money just because of the Gerrard name. They don’t have any money. They cannot raise any money. They will be in courts running up legal bills for years.

    “Pretendgers” is killing them.

As long as King remains they will never be able to build a club.

    Long live the King

Tom played 93 minutes in last season’s cup final.

    ———

No he didn’t, he replaced Tierney in the first half. McGregor was shunted to left back.

    What?

Well ah think it’s because of the wonderful things he does

  7. Oh well, the feel good factor of Tom Rogic’s new deal lasts less than 24 before we’re gazumped by the Stevie G revolution. Jamie Murphy joins the maelstrom of mediocrity on a permanent deal, must have been those match winning performances against us that persuaded them to splash the millions on him.

  8. Tom Rogic starts and finishes this season:

    League 18 starts finished 10

    ECL 2 starts finished 1

ECL Qual 4 starts finished 3

Scottish Cup 2 starts 0 finished

League Cup 1 start finished 1

So that’s started 27 and finished 15 as well as coming on in 10 other games.

So much for not being a 90 minute player …… apart from the 15 games where he was a 90 minute player.

  10. On Rogic – delighted. One of those players who occasionally seems like he is playing against children.

I haven’t got around to the Kilmarnock and Aberdeen games yet but before them he has played 2454 minutes – the 11th highest in the squad. This equates to 27.27 matches or 47% of available playing time.

He missed 12 matches with a knee injury and 2 through international duty travel. Apart from away at Hamilton in April he has been in every match day squad when available.

He has played 90 minutes on 13 occasions in the 39 matches he has appeared and the 27 he has started.

Very much first pick when available.

  15. Tom Rogic is a class player and it’s a fantastic piece of business.

However just because Tom sometimes plays 90 minutes doesn’t mean he performs to his optimum for 90 minutes.

We have all seen Tom fade after approximately 60 minutes game time. I wish it wasn’t the case and possibly going forward this may improve. But in my opinion it is the reality at this time.

And he has a cracking song. ?

  23. Glasgow playing Scarlets tonight in the rugby Pro 14 SF. Tomorrow Leinster Munster.

BTW, next year’s final will be at CP.

For people who don’t follow the game, you can get as many points as you like in the regular season but finishing top only gets you a home SF in the playoffs – a bit like the NFL.

How long, before this is brought into Scottish football to stop 10 in a row ?

In this Youtube clip (take it or leave it as you will), Tom Rogic gets an honourable mention as a contender for best player from the Australasian continent – 4.15 minutes in. Their chosen best is Aaron Mooy for Australasia.

On this corresponding Friday two years ago, I was on a call with a work colleague who is an ex grade 1 referee and who is a Celtic supporter. At about 4.30 I asked his thought on the speculation about the Celtic manager’s job which was vacant. His response was “as long as it’s not Brendan Rodgers”

About 4.50 that afternoon came the announcement. I am never short of ammunition when we have any banter.

  25. Fake news by PL. Wait till Jabba/DK come out with the “super dooper” free transfer from a galaxy far far away for a six legged 2 headed Centre half and see who’s happy ;-)

  26. Was saying to my brother earlier in the week that of the players at risk of moving on (Dembele/Armstrong/Boyata/Rogic) Tom Rogic was the one who was pretty much irreplaceable. He was also the one I thought certain to go….I was overwhelmed with joy hearing the news last night.

You don’t replace players with that talent – you just know that because we’re Celtic then another flair player will come along but who knows how long to wait.

And how good to actually watch and enjoy? For enjoyment, TR is up there with Lubo, Naka & Paddy McCourt. It was impossible to replace these bhoys as well.

Happy days and fair play to Brendan and the board for making this happen.

Is it not about time we had a song for Tom Rogic?

Rogic is one of those guys who can peak at a very high level (similar to Agathe but with different sklls). He’ll get far more game time and exposure with us than he would in England and I think he realises he’s in a good place. That said, he must be on a bumper contract to sign for five years. Brilliant news. I think Armstrong will definitely go and unless he’s willing to sign for at least three years, then we should expedite that quickly.

I just had a look at the seating plan for Scott Brown testimonial and it looks like over 50,000 already sold (quick guestimate on my part).

Glad to say I have a ticket for tomorrow.

  28. It takes time and a fair degree of imagination to come up with a credible and appropriate song.

The words must roll of the tongue whether the singer is elephants or sober.

It must be appropriate for the game, the bus and the pub.

We must be patient , the alternative could be a rushed ,botched attempt like the Callum McGregor effort which is more suited to the pews from where it originated.

HH to all, especially the composers amongst us.
