Rogic on a road well travelled, Ciftci’s mark

389

I’ve been slow to catch onto the Tom Rogic bandwagon but his performance yesterday marks a new level of attainment. After some fleeting appearances in the months following his arrival at the club as a 20-year-old, Rogic dropped off the radar. A loan return to Australia and a number of injuries meant he went close to two years without playing for Celtic before his return to the team last month. I’d written him off, and when the teams were announced to face Dundee, I was a bit disappointed to see him in the team ahead of Scott Allan.

Yesterday was like a light being switched on. He demonstrated speed, skill, intelligence and finishing. If we had acquired him for a lot of money last month, I’d be delighted at what was on show.

All of this happened, of course, against a poorly organised Dundee team. Far greater challenges lie ahead, but just like the transformation in Nir Bitton a year ago, or the gains Wanyama made in 2012, we can hope to transform Rogic from a lost-looking squad player into a top performer.

I think we were all delighted Nadir Ciftci got off the mark. Being clean through on the keeper puts the burden of onus on the striker. A significant percentage of such chances are lost, but Nadir’s finish was assured. Like all strikers, he needed that first goal, and I suspect needed the assist he gained a moment earlier when setting Scott Brown up for the fifth.

More game-time and more goals are now needed, starting with Raith Rovers in the League Cup (ouch) on Wednesday.

Eh scuse me Ben, but if he was elected to the office that means that you would oppose him for that reason?

The US Constitution officially separates church and state and always has done.

As for Amurkan values, the integrity and calibre of Republican presidential nominees is a useful barometer.

Article VI of the US constitution states: “No religious Test shall ever be required as a Qualification to any Office or public Trust under the United States.”

The first amendment to the constitution begins: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof …”

    ….

Carson, a Christian, is a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church. In October, he will publish a new book, written with his wife Candy Carson and entitled A More Perfect Union: What We the People Can Do to Reclaim Our Constitutional Liberties.

In publicity material issued by Penguin Random House, Carson is quoted as saying: “I believe that making a difference starts with understanding our amazing founding document, the US Constitution.

“And as someone who has performed brain surgery thousands of times, I can assure you that the Constitution isn’t brain surgery.

So Carson claims that he wants to reclaim the rights given in the constitution but would deny a Muslim those rights?

    Has he even read it?

He tells us himself doesn’t he? But then there is the real Constitution and then there is the Fundamentalist Christian Constitution.

In the same week as Carson says all this, a reality TV actor running in the same race smirks when an obvious plant at a televised rally states that Obama is not American and is a Muslim. Cheers and shouts abound.

On American politics: The religiously neutral parts of the constitution existed in a time before radical, militant Islam was a thing the United States could conceive of.

That in itself doesn’t make Carson right, but it allows him to circumvent any dissonance that may be perceived.

However, the second amendment was written at a time when there was nothing a man could bear more dangerous than a musket. I wonder how Carson feels about gun laws?

  16. The Real Tam Cowan

Do you think there is any possibility of a militant islamic candidate becoming President of the United States?

The question wasn’t about extreme islamic views. It was about ANY muslim.

  17. The Real Tam Cowan

Dissonance indeed. I think you know of the following though..

Radical Christian fundamentalism was what drove those who drafted that Constitution to ensure that State and Religion were legally separated.

The flight of religious minorities to America to escape the State enforced religious codes of European countries heavily influenced them

To this day, if you speak to many “Christian” Americans, they genuinely do not include Catholics in that category. Even when you ask them about it they still insist upon their view.

Catholics were one of the suspect religions in those formative years.

The Constitution wasn’t written in a vacuum or a microwave for that matter.

Carson cannot invent his own version of the Constitution.

Or the Declaration of Independence – two documents that are invariably co-mingled into whatever the unscrupulous want them to be, and usually to win votes from the naive and unwary.

With Carson, it’s as much his brass neck in saying completely contradictory things in the same Q&A session. But then in Amurkan politics that is standard operating procedure.

  18. The Real Tam Cowan on

    TIMALOY29

I merely point out the context in which Carson can hold seemingly contradictory points of view.

The fear of radical Islam, especially in the USA, is of a level where such statements can be justified to an electorate.

  19. Great Day yesterday, got to Paradise a bit late for the Jock Stein memorial, couldnae get my usual coffee as ‘greater dunblane select'( tbb:-) were playin Oz at Tennis.strolled round to Celtic park and met to many quality Celts from the blog before going in.

Had my seat in the comfy chair again thanks to Oldtim and sat back and watched Celtic.

a brilliant performance, everyone played there part,i thought we were faster and fitter to everything, our passing was back on line, and the tempo and movement was conducted briliantly by our midfield of Nir,Broony,Kris and Tom Rogic, the give and goes and movements meant i was smiling all afternoon we could have been 3 up by the time Tom bulged the net for the first one, great to see griff on the scoresheet and even better to see Nadir come off the bench to score 1(it really should have been 2 but ‘brither maclean took ‘steps’ to limit him to only one goal .

No solid victory like yesterdays would be complete without complimenting our defence, bhoyata great,no messin and knew when to step out and then retreat to his defence on giving the ball to our midfield.Efe ;the imperious(bkev) was not messing about, with displays like that Jozo will have to push hard,as will all our squad,Saidy Janko well done, you made the right back position your own and deservedly got your motm award, great to see and i feel there are better thing to come from you.Ach poor izzi what a joy watching you play yesterday, you score 2 goals and miss out on a hatrick by aiming for the gantry in the kerrydale :-)

I really enjoyed yesterday, capped of by bumping into an old school friend over from Oz to see the game(and family). 67heaven good to meet you again and your grandson i know you enjoyed it as much as me :-)

Special nod to the kano foundation and their work yesterday taking all those kids to the game,it was a great game to introduce the younger generation to Celtic i hope they all get Celtic.Their excitement is palpable and great to see.

work to do and i cant wait to see our 11 heroes go on the park again on wednesday, lets remember Turnbull Hutton for the gentleman of integrity he was, respect his team and then beat them..

hope youz are all doing great Celts

For almost everybody, reason serves to rationalize their existing beliefs, not to correct them.

Carson, Trumpet et al know this and use it to underpin every word they say.

I would call it fanning the flames of prejudice but that is just contextual on my part.
