Rogic, Zenit’s final prep

296

Pictures of Tom Rogic back at training are very welcome but he will surely be weeks away from competing at the top level, I don’t hold out any hope for him playing in the away game against Zenit, never mind the home game.  You will remember Brendan Rodgers took a long time before allowing Tom to play an entire 90 minutes, suggesting latent concerns about the player’s natural fitness.  I have him down for an appearance at the end of the month.

Zenit got the better of Maribor in Turkey on Saturday in their final warm-up game before facing Celtic, although the Slovenians, also on a midterm break, had more of the play and chances. There is little confidence ahead of Thursday’s Europa League tie, but that nervousness you feel in July, when we leave for Scandinavia to play a team 22 games into their season, will be felt in Russia right now.

Zenit may be stronger, but we have reasons to be hopeful.

I’m rather partial to taking the bookies for a quid or ten. Never been known to even countenance winning money by hoping we lose, nor have any other Celtic fans I know.

Couldn’t enjoy spending it for starters.

    Care to rephrase your suggestion?

You are probably right. On the other hand, can we not compare today with what happened one year back? I mean Zenit v. Anderlecht.

Zenit were big favouites. Anderlecht the team with small budget ,very young players who did not play big football. Zenit was knocked out over two legs 0:2 and 3:1.

    Is Celtic no better Anderlecht?

    Consider that my friend ;-)

    “Care to rephrase your suggestion?”

Don’t think there was a suggestion. There was a question, however, with 3 possible alternatives advanced.

I am sure that the number of Celtic fans prepared to bet against Celtic is small but it is not non-existant. We had someone in the early days of CQN who took pelters for making just such an admission.

Me, I still think we can win on Thursday.

  4. Happy Admin Day.

I was very upbeat after our performance at Pittodrie and thought we might make a fist of it in the EL but that optimism has evaporated since mid-December as our form seems to have taken a downwards turn. Obviously injuries have taken their toll but I suspect the rest of the team do not trust the central defence.

Also I’m no sports scientist but these injuries appear to affect players who are not playing week-in/week-out. Wee Jamesie is now playing every week and appears to have overcome his injury problems. Griff seems to be affected more often than not now – is this due to being kept sitting on the bench and not involved as regularly as he could/should be? First team regulars like Broonie and KT never seem to pull hamstrings. Maybe it is just their physiological make up but too much of a coincidence?

We scored five when I took my kid sis tomher first game-Happy Hoooopy Days!!!!

I created a monster, she wouldn’t even go over to Lisbon this week wi her sister and their pals because Celtic are playing on Thursday.

What a lass. So proud of her,so proud of the sheer joy she still-by and large!-gets from watching her team 36 years later.

I hope Celtic give her a reason to smile broadly at her hun-infested workplace on Friday!!!

Thanks for the boost to confidence.

I never ever conceived that qualifying for the next round was impossible. It could happen – we have beaten stronger outdits than Zenit before but there are always two ways to interpret that result with Anderlecht.

    1) Because they beat Zenit, so can we.

    2) Because they beat Zenit last year, they will be doubly determined to precent it happening again.

I am always wary before a tie but, once we are in the contest, I recover my optimism and believe that Celtic are capable of anything.

I se your team are leading the Ekstraklasa but it looks like a tight race with lots of teams capable of getting ito the top half of the table.

No snideness intended. I often wonder if Celtic being at short odds encourages us to bet on them as we are being led to believe they have a good chance, or whetehr the odds drifting encourages more bets to be laid by Celtic optimists beleiving we have got more chance than those odds suggest.

It was a genuine query. Mind you, our odds may have drifted because bookies were not impressed by recent form.

So, BT is paying £295mn per season for 32 matches, which equates to a price per match of £9.2mn. This compares to the 2015 auction, where BT paid £320mn per season for 42 matches, which equated to a price per match of £7.6mn. On an absolute basis, BT will see its annual costs fall by 8%, but its price per game goes up by 21%. Sky saw its absolute costs fall by 14% and its cost per game fall by 16%.

I mentioned a few months back that I reckoned BT were likely to rein in spending on football. They had the joint platform with SKY,had used their sport coverage to skyrocket their broadband sales, and further growth was unlikely-except in costs.

SKY also realised that they’d been faced down and bluffed by BT at the last auction. Hence the 16% reduction in value. If you think of the EPL as a cartel of companies offering a product,it doesn’t take a genius to realise that if that product is only available to a limited number of consumers, they too will form a cartel to drive down the price.

Once the consumers agree on a level on which they are agreed,Bismarck time. Man the lifeboats!!!

It’s pretty obvious, but all I ever remembered was being 4yo and seeing Celtic!

And being sent down the front wi a few empty cans to stand on,and us winning 2-1.

  17. Not football related or political so tin hat on;

hearing that the latest luvvie had decided not support an international development agency, Oxfam because of what went on with some of their senior staff in Haiti and how the organisation dealt with it got me wondering are these celebrity endorsements really worth it? Sure they provide ‘media interest’ in a campaign or event which may either be difficult to get or may not get any. But are these people really all about self publicity? (I am sure there are many celebrities who do this work for all the right reasons without any personal gain whatsoever) What happened with Oxfam and other agencies, no doubt, we are talking about human beings after all, and how it was dealt with was wrong but did that stop the thousands of workers and volunteers provide life saving assistance to those who needed it both in Haiti and elsewhere, of course not? Will the actions of some Oxfam staff and celebrities deciding to jump ship effect what they are able to do in the future? Of course it will, people will think twice before they will support Oxfam and all other development agencies and as a consequence will by and large not make that donation leading in turn to these agencies being able to do less work and save less lives.

So the point of all of this? If you have spare cash and you are wondering if you should support a development agency don’t think twice give your money because the only people who will suffer will be the poorest of the poor who are wholly innocent in all of this.

Rant over back to football and politics!

  18. MCPHAIL BHOY

There is a danger of throwing the baby out with the bathwater – media rush to be holier than thou.

My concern with charities is the amount of admin costs they take and what’s left for the actual beneficiaries. Mary’s meals being a positive example.

  19. BOBBY MURDOCH'S CURLED-UP WINKLEPICKERS on

    MCPHAILBHOY

Agreed. I decide who to donate to. Oxfam do wonderful work, but obviously need to seriously improve their oversight. And then some.

Some charities end up donating a very small amount to their targeted causes,Oxfam is one of the better ones in that respect. The important thing,IMO,is that the current scandal-and it is!-doesn’t put people off donating. If you don’t want to donate to certain charities, donate elsewhere.

No-one can do any good by doing nothing.

  20. Gene,

Absolutely check the costs incurred by a charity you are thinking of supporting and if you feel they are value for money then support them, but like you said this media circus will end with not a clean up of those who should not be trusted to work with anyone let alone vulnerable people but ends up punishing the wholly innocent, the poor of the world. The media will move on and on to their next crusade; never once asking the real question in all of this, why do we have development agencies in the first place? Because the world and in particular the west have in most cases through colonialism and exploitation milked these countries and people dry or turned a blind eye to wholesale corruption so that they could make arms sales to their ‘Leader’ leaving the local people with barely anything to survive on. A lot of us on this site are of Irish descent, our ancestors knew only too well what that felt like unfortunately more that 160 years later very little has changed other than it is reported much more quickly.

In the words of Paul VI if you wantt peace work for justice!

Maybe those countries would have been better served by a transition period from colonialism to self-rule,rather than an independence forced by the US,or fought over by warring factions.

Many of the problems,of course, were caused by the split of Africa and the Middle East towards the end of WWI. But let’s be honest, most problems were caused by the people who caused them.

The colonial powers left Africa and the Middle East 60-100 years ago,and most of their wealth remained. What they’ve done with it since is no fault of ours.

Had to go after my post yesterday, but your link to Rangers FC Memorandum and Articles of Association from 1899, with that lovely Certificate of Incorporation, gratefully received. Love the top of page 8, the kicker, the dagger in the lying heart of “company deid, club not,” nonsense:
