Ronaldo, Ali and the pantomime act

441

I read critical comments on Cristiano Ronaldo’s comments after Iceland had the temerity to take a point from Portugal last night and recalled some of the heartfelt and genuine affection expressed last week for Muhammad Ali.

“Graceless”, “disrespectful” and “unsporting” was the general tone, which is pretty much what was levelled at Muhamad when he called Joe Frazier an “Uncle Tom”, surely the pinnacle of a career sending disrespectful barbs towards opponents.

I could listen to and watch Muhammad all day long, he was forever a treat to sport and the world, but had he shut his mouth and JUST boxed only actual boxing fans would know his name now.

Ronaldo sounds like he’s taken lessons from The Greatest. At first pass it doesn’t look like it, but when he reacts churlishly after a disappointment, he helps make football a bigger sport, just as Ali did for boxing. And just like Ali, many will want Ronaldo and Portugal to lose, just to take the smug grin off his face. That’s why sport engages so many, but if you loved Ali, be consistent and cheer on Ronnie.

I’ve read and enjoyed some of what this pantomime act they’ve signed across the city has been saying this month. Good luck to him, he’s sheer entertainment. Anyone who can give it thick to royalty, mix with certain councillors, shout for Celtic, then tell Newco to cheer for him as he takes millions from them, deserves some slack.

    Hebcelt,

Jj’s comment was in reply to my comment about carlton Cole being shipped out after scoring one goal after only one start.

Ok, after my stunning 13.5/1 treble yesterday, here are today’s considerations.

    TREBLE

    England Win

    Ukraine Win

    Germany draw

Better than 11/1 with PP. Fill yer boots.

  3. Quick question – migrant labour is said to undercut our own homegrown talent and yet they have to live and work within the economic climate, sharing the same costs etc. How is that possible? Is it that they’re prepared to live in such squalid conditions no true Brit could possibly put up with it?

When I lived in London and flat-shared was I potentially undercutting my colleagues at the same level that wanted to live alone – as somebody in their late 20s might want to?

“However someone is micro managing the dot situation at Celtic, the magic figure is around 40 when dots drop to that level, a new few rows suddenly become available.”

    Corkcelt,

    This makes sense.

You wouldn’t want to be in a section by yourself.

Then the dot would be on its tod. ;)

Always easier to sell a limited amount of anything. I don’t agree with it but that’s business.

…. or maybe they’re opening seats that they’d initially planned to keep empty.

It’s absolutely brilliant that so many tickets have been sold. Now it’s the board’s turn to spend. I’m sure they will, in time.

    ‘Ernie..,

You Norway and Swiss figures appear to back up the contention that they bring in migrants as and when needed’

    ####

My understanding is that Norway and Switzerland cannot stop EU citizens from entering or working in their countries.

If someone from the EU wants to work in Norway or Switzerland, those countries cannot stop them.

It’s not a case of them being allowed in as and when they are needed.

If Norway and Switzerland want to trade with the EU in the way they do now, they have to accept the free movement of labour.

So, just like the UK at the moment.

Just daydreaming ahead to next season. First potential cloud on the horizon occurred.

Any dots who travels to any CL/EL games, please, please, please, if you see a dot with a flare, dob him in to the local Polis, or better still take it off him, shove it up his a*** and light it.

After dot trouble at the Euro’s, I am sure UEFA will be looking to make an example.

Getting kicked out after qualifying for CL Group stages would be just too painful.

  11. Macjay,

Do you think words like ‘mutual respect’ enter into Boris Johnston’s vocabulary. Like it or lump it the days of entitlement are gone?

They live very frugally. They either send money home, or save with the intention of returning home in a few years, where they hope the purchasing power of their savings will be greater than in the UK.

So, short term pain for long term gain.

And that way wealth gets spread about within the EU.

Conte has banned the media from Italy’s training complex . Conte has ordered the Italian squad to have no contact with the media whatsoever . That has resulted in the Italian media having to pad out its Euro 2016 guff with whatever guff they can find .

Today saw Swedish midfielder Albin Ekdal being wheeled out —

” I signed for Juventus in 2008 . Giorgio Chiellini really went out of his way to help me ——- a lovely kind man -then I had to face him on the training pitch . I still bear the scars -talk about black and white “

The difference I expect is that they first must have a job which is quite different to turning up and prospecting for work, as Greenpinata shows there are strict guidelines to get into employment in the first place.

Another wee note on the % of migrant workers would be the population that % is measured against, no ?

Just put £5 on at 11/1 on Betfred. Tried to follow your “tip” yesterday, but our internet was playing up here, and Slovakia scored their first, before I could get the treble on.

I’ve also got £5 on three “away” wins today! :-)

I would not mind Giudetti coming back or Hooper for that matter but would prefer some other option there must be lots of players from the lower tiers of French,German,Italian and Spanish football that could score goals aplenty in Scotland. It is about time our scouts came up with a successful striker purchase.
