Ronaldo, Ali and the pantomime act

441

I read critical comments on Cristiano Ronaldo’s comments after Iceland had the temerity to take a point from Portugal last night and recalled some of the heartfelt and genuine affection expressed last week for Muhammad Ali.

“Graceless”, “disrespectful” and “unsporting” was the general tone, which is pretty much what was levelled at Muhamad when he called Joe Frazier an “Uncle Tom”, surely the pinnacle of a career sending disrespectful barbs towards opponents.

I could listen to and watch Muhammad all day long, he was forever a treat to sport and the world, but had he shut his mouth and JUST boxed only actual boxing fans would know his name now.

Ronaldo sounds like he’s taken lessons from The Greatest. At first pass it doesn’t look like it, but when he reacts churlishly after a disappointment, he helps make football a bigger sport, just as Ali did for boxing. And just like Ali, many will want Ronaldo and Portugal to lose, just to take the smug grin off his face. That’s why sport engages so many, but if you loved Ali, be consistent and cheer on Ronnie.

I’ve read and enjoyed some of what this pantomime act they’ve signed across the city has been saying this month. Good luck to him, he’s sheer entertainment. Anyone who can give it thick to royalty, mix with certain councillors, shout for Celtic, then tell Newco to cheer for him as he takes millions from them, deserves some slack.

  1. One more thing and this probably goes for everyone.

If you post controversial posts on a publc forum do not cry like a little bitch when someone disagrees with you and pulls you up on it..

If this upsets you do much then you should stick to boring your mates down the pub

Turkeybhoy…why would Ronaldo want to lace Messi’s boots when he can well afford to get someone else to do it for him?

    ——–

Plus modern boots like the ones Messi wears don’t even have laces that need laced up, so Ronaldo would be their all day not lacing the boots, total waste of his time.

If Ronaldo cant lace Messi’s boots.

    His slave name?

    That’s just ridiculous.

Like the fellow that he chose to name himself after didn’t keep slaves?

Listen to me – all that you are doing is wasting your time.

Now my time is no longer yours.

    Have a nice day.

  5. Comparing Ali to Ronaldo is a joke.

Ali won Gold at the Rome olympics and due to racial segregation he was treated like an outcast.

Ali was a beacon of light to his people and to many people around the world.

Ronaldo just an overpaid fitba player who is a bit of a prima donna

  6. Stats just popped up there saying Slovakia had 3 attempts with one on target. Yet they are 2 up.

Ali made one of the greatest sacrifices any sportsman ever made for his beliefs, and we all lost out on years of the man at his magnificent peak.

The vast majority of his jibes at opponents were done with great humour, like his George Foreman ‘Mummy’ routine.

  12. The Battered Bunnet on

Ali tells the Diner story in one of his early interviews with Parkinson, shown last week. It’ll be on iPlayer just now, and is worth watching all 4 of them.

    As he describes it…

3 weeks after he won the Gold medal, he’s back in town (wearing his medal) and goes into a downtown Louisville diner for lunch, a White-only diner.

    – Coffee and a hot dog please

    – We don’t serve Blacks in here

    – And I don’t eat ’em. Now gimme a coffee and a damn hot dog

Service refused, he left, took off the medal and chucked it in the Ohio river.

He also explains his reasoning for changing his ‘slave name’. It’s logical, articulate and insightful.

Not all of what he says in these interviews and elsewhere stands up to criticism, but the force of his personality, his strength of conviction and oratory is something to behold.

Go watch if you haven’t already.

  14. I loved Ali,he was my all time idol as I am a boxing fanatic.I have to say that some of his utterances regarding his Muslim faith were inflamatory, racist, and downright nonsense.

  25. They hated Ali for being black, you honestly think that he hated them for the colour of their skin?. Maybe it was the dreadful way he was treated, his family and friends treated or even the way his people were treated for hundreds of years, just maybe had something to do with it. Sounds like the huns, calling us bigots sectarian etc because we stand up to their bullshit!. Saw the same thing applied during the referendum, those poor English lambs, they never done anything!. But got to say I find nothing funnier than some good ole macho posturing:).

  26. Snake Plissken on

Decent performance from Slovakia putting the pressure on England tomorrow.

Depending on results that win might be enough for them to qualify.

If Wales get any kind of result tomorrow then England need to win on Monday.

Russia offer nothing to this tournament apart from badly behaved fans and that coach was rather entertaining.

I am just hoping that whatever happens England don’t win the group because of how the knock out fixtures come out.

  27. C. Ronaldo is one of those punters that widnae have stood a chance living in our part of the world, his nose would have been up amongst his finely coifurred hair many a time, he’s nothing but a show off and would have taken many second prizes.

However, let’s not take away his philanthropy, as a poor boy fae the Azores who’s da died of alcoholism he knows what it was like to up in poverty, sharing a room with his brother and sisters, although I think more than a few on here did that.

In my case I started out in a former Nissan Hut and then we upgraded to a single end. Didnae do us any harm but the Azores is no Scotland or Ireland either.

For all the good things he has done in his life, and there are man, there is also that “big heid” side to him and although Manure received a massive £80 million for him his transfer may also be a result of being too big for his own boots.

Sir Furious does not like any player to usurp him, see Jaap Stam who criticised him in his biography and David Beckham although it may have been the latter’s wife that put The Gub’s red rose nose out of joint.

We have a substantially large Portuguese population over here, the majority 90+% from the Azores.

One summer their “hero” appeared for an exhibition game at BMO Stadium, at the entrance all these wee pork and cheese weans were queued up waiting for him. He blanked them on the way in and similar on leaving the pitch and stadium.

This is Toronto the good we are talking about but the Toronto Star didnae pull any punches in their report and needless to say he isnae the flavour of the sports world in this part of the planet.

If Res 12 is such a ‘storm in a teapot’, why do you mention it so frequently on the blog?

I was in Funchal a couple of weeks ago. Cristiano certainly hails from that region ( Santo Antonio ; up the hill from Funchal) and is very popular among Madeirans (whom I found to be such excellent people that I am supporting Portugal in the Euros!).
