Ronaldo, Ali and the pantomime act

441

I read critical comments on Cristiano Ronaldo’s comments after Iceland had the temerity to take a point from Portugal last night and recalled some of the heartfelt and genuine affection expressed last week for Muhammad Ali.

“Graceless”, “disrespectful” and “unsporting” was the general tone, which is pretty much what was levelled at Muhamad when he called Joe Frazier an “Uncle Tom”, surely the pinnacle of a career sending disrespectful barbs towards opponents.

I could listen to and watch Muhammad all day long, he was forever a treat to sport and the world, but had he shut his mouth and JUST boxed only actual boxing fans would know his name now.

Ronaldo sounds like he’s taken lessons from The Greatest. At first pass it doesn’t look like it, but when he reacts churlishly after a disappointment, he helps make football a bigger sport, just as Ali did for boxing. And just like Ali, many will want Ronaldo and Portugal to lose, just to take the smug grin off his face. That’s why sport engages so many, but if you loved Ali, be consistent and cheer on Ronnie.

I’ve read and enjoyed some of what this pantomime act they’ve signed across the city has been saying this month. Good luck to him, he’s sheer entertainment. Anyone who can give it thick to royalty, mix with certain councillors, shout for Celtic, then tell Newco to cheer for him as he takes millions from them, deserves some slack.

I honestly believe that a positive verdict from the Supreme Court will open the door to challenge all the issues that have got under our skin.

    a) Tax Evasion

    b) Illegal Payments

    c) Side Letters

    d) Player Registration

    e) Football Fairplay

    f) Title and Cups Stripping

    g) SFA Collusion /or Conspiracy

Highlighting the Euro Licence has been no bad thing – it should be kept alive but put on back-burner – we will have ‘bigger fish to fry’

What I really resented was some trying to use Res 12 to besmirch and undermine Celtic.

In case Phil’s website is being ‘spiked’ …

    Hanging on the telephone

I must confess that I’m starting to get slightly concerned.

As of yesterday afternoon, the senior chaps in the Sevco regime had not heard from the Admirable Warbur- ton.

I do hope that there was a call today, just to put minds at ease.

Of course, it could be worse.

Some of those generous Sevco directors could ask for their money back from the Holding Company Vehicle. However, I’m sure that will not happen.I expect that the normal conclave this week will be all business.

Ah yes, business. Now one of those business plans would be a good idea.

Especially one that includes proof that there are enough funds to see out the season and fulfil all of the fixtures.

Once that is in place, then the public sale of season tickets can go ahead.I suppose that it is important to get those fiduciary ducks in a row.

Of course, there is no major cash flow issue as Mr David Cunningham King is poised to over invest. Whatever it takes and all that.I have been interested for some time as to the precise modalities of how Big Mike received his £5m earlier this year.

Was it a loan? The thing with being de-listed is that you and I dear reader do not need to know this stuff.

For the avoidance of doubt, I am rather nosey on your behalf dear reader. So watch this space on that one…

The late Jock Stein knew that football was part of the entertainment industry, and Sevco is certainly that. The year-end accounts will be highly entertaining. I am particularly looking forward to how those excellent chaps in Campbell Dallas accommodate those unau- dited interims.

I’m told by number crunching buddies to keep an eye out for that one. Regular readers here will not be surprised that Big Mike’s “humiliating climb-down” was no such thing. He now has three of his biggest hitters on the board of Rangers Retail Limited.

A buddy in Shannonside contacted me to say that he spotted Sevco tops on sale in the Limerick branch of Heaton’s. That chain store gives floor space to Sports Direct here in the Republic of Ireland. I know that fine city very well, and it has never been associated with matters Ibrox.

Of course, should those Sevco tops remain unsold in that fine emporium in Munster then the Holding Company Vehicle will have to buy them back from Big Mike plus a handling, which is only fair after all.

I understand that an invoice for the unsold stock from the last year is now being prepared at Shirebrook.

In the meantime, I hope Mr Warburton gets in touch if just to speak to his new player Mr Barton for the first time.

    That would be nice.

  4. Can’t get to Phils site. Is Phil getting DOS’d?

Anyone got the text and can paste it here? I’ll click the link later to give him his click count.

Your basic refusal to call the man by his real name speaks volumes.

I did not launch an attack on you and I did not call foul on anything.

I merely made a comment on your post to which you called me an ignoramus and/or member of the PC brigade. The only way I’m a member of a PC brigade is because I’m posting on one right now.

Nobody brought up racism but you, nor the ghost of Kojo the great defender of civil rights.

And as I said earlier if you want to post controversial points on a public forum be prepared for someone to take issue with it. If that constitutes bullying then you must have led a very sheltered life.

Are France supposed to be tournament favourites? Not too impressed with them tonight. Luckily for them Uefa should be throwing England out tonight should they not?

  10. Any positive movement yet from UEFA on the Res12 ad? Doubt it wil ever happen. Sorry.

Just like the positions he takes up – times his runs forward – doesn’t leave big gaps – and he is against the most potent side of the French attack.

  12. GlassTwoThirdsFull on

    Albania very well organised.

France lacking width and nobody making runs beyond Giroud.

Get the full-backs forward a bit more and the “wide” attacking players coming inside.

Starting to get the distinct impression people will be voting to leave the EU purely on immigration grounds ……similar situation the Irish Famine victims found themselves in ….

when will we ever learn, when will we ever learn …..

If we in the West were not so greedy and selfish, the ‘other half’ would not be so desperately poor. We are all born equal….pity we have turned it into a jungle, where the strong survive, at the expense of the week …..
