Ronny Deila era comes to an end

976

And release! Ronny Deila had to go and a few minutes ago, Celtic confirmed that he will leave at the end of the season. I’ve bitten my tongue on this online for months, as I once before suggested we sack a manager here (April 2008) and very quickly regretted it, but as anyone I’ve spoken to privately will tell you, it’s been clear we were on the wrong track since our Champions League exit in August.

The news broke in Norway that he was leaving a few days ago, which forced everyone’s hands to make an announcement now, but I’m glad he’s going to be with us to see the league title won. It doesn’t matter who the competition is, winning the league means lots to many of us, and we’re about to part company with only the second manager in our history not to lose a league title.

For that, he will always be welcome. It would have been absurd to sack a manager two games away from winning the league.

Ronny arrived with a plan for playing football which was cruelly exposed as inadequate in Warsaw, as Legia picked us off. That was acceptable, but the plan never changed. Neither did the results in Europe. We went down to Maribor and Malmo in the same manner.

I’d never heard of Ronny before his appointment but I backed the decision at the time, as he fitted the profile of manager I wanted: not a reject from England, someone who had overachieved with a club in Europe, a student of the game. The remit was right but the candidate was wrong. I still want someone to fit that remit, as opposed to an unemployed manager who has been through the English circuit.

While I would have made the same appointment, the board take responsibility for managerial appointments, good and bad, and they got this one wrong and deserve criticism.

You will note among the appropriate criticism that one journalist, banned from Celtic Park for nearly two years for lying, has used Celtic’s current vulnerability to swing his toe-capped boots.

This is Operation Destabilise Celtic, it’s an alternative strategy to apologising for lying about Celtic, or not lying about Celtic again. It has the hallmarks of an organised PR campaign. You know the script.

Ronny, all the very best and thanks for the Roar. Go win the league with some style.

if Deila and Collins are the only ones to go, get ready for a summer of fun.

    Co-ordinated campaign you reckon?

Not yet, at least. But it will be. Sick of these people pissing all over us.

So we don’t want NFL then? The Magic Hat was in that bracket too before he put RD out a job. There again it didn’t take much to beat us on Sunday.

Are we only looking at managers who are currently in employment?

    Who knows?

Are we to assume that the person who appointed RD is to be allowed to appoint his replacement?

    ———————————————–

Nup. It’ll be Dermot’s appointment this time.

  7. This is an appointment we have to get right,no projects ,bin the money ball philosophy get in a proven manager who is tactically aware and a strong personality to sort out the dressing room.Neil Lennon is probably the easy option for the board. In my opinion he has had his chance after all was he really strong enough to stand up to the board regarding player recruitment. The most damning thing about Sunday as mentioned by Paul McStay was the fitness level of the players.Ronny was never proactive in responding to situations in a game ,was generally caught like a rabbit in the headlights. The new manager has to be strong enough to insist on bringing in his own team, this was not allowed last time.Good luck to Ronny.

Ronny leaves with my good wishes.

He should not ever have been employed in the position he was and was always setup to fail. Brought in to assist and given the managers job! Sorry but that was never actually truly a plan. That was a cheap skate move.

I don’t accept your attempt to blame the SSM and/or an individual who has no real impact on the Celtic supports thoughts. Some may read it but few pay heid to what they say or believe them. That is in itself a sad reflection of a view of the Celtic support or some of the support.

Our problems lie at the foot of two men. Dermot Desmond and Peter Lawell. Nothing will deflect me from that belief.

Yes, please now go and win the league Celtic. But Peter’s strangle hold on the football department must now be loosened and any man employed must be given the autonomy to do his job fully without distraction. Every player scouted must be his decision, every player purchased must be his decision. Every scout must be answerable to the manager. The only thing the Peter should be involved in is determining the budget, and negotiating player comings and goings based on the new managers recommendations.

That’s if Peter is afforded the role he currently holds.

Hopefully our new manager does not have Peter to contend with though.

No more covering the cracks or blaming the SSM for our own short comings. They will continue to write up the PR stories handed to them. They will continue to talk to senior players in our dressing room. That’s the way it is. But they have not created the problems ou club faces!

Time to face that fact and act on our own deficiences and stop the redirects.

We have problems internally that need to be questioned and resolved without redirecting blame onto those that do not matter to us.

  10. No shock really … he made it easy for the board by jumping.

I’ like to announce formally that I won’t be a candidate for the manager’s post.

Well, since everyone and his granny is likely to be asked by the media, I thought I’d get it in early.

  11. Is Ronny staying till end of season because the man the club want is still in a job?. Latest market movers include Larsson 14/1, Lambert 16/1, Giggs 33/1 and surprisingly Paul Hartley 40’s now best price 14/1, all mentioned are currently employed.

Too early for Henke….Helsingborg are getting pumped this year and he is under pressure…

He’s done absolutely nothing in management to suggest he can do the job.

  15. Blantyretim & BMCUW,

From last article prior to the start of the bigger picture.

I agree with you both 100%. Social status is ambiguous and often it’s down to perception. In the US it is more defined with education, profession and wealth determining status.

I could go to the Open University, get mega degrees then win the lottery. I would never consider myself anything but working class , although others may see that differently when I drive up in my new Porch and park it on my new heated driveway.

Nothing would make me understand or agree with attacks on the disabled or the weakest in our soceity.

Anyway guys, thanks and we have other matters ( although maybe not as important in the big picture ) to discuss today.

    HH. And to all KTF.

  16. Sorry for Ronny that it didn’t work out. A number if players should be ashamed of themselves as well but Ronny was just too inflexible,

The Board statement should have been that the entire mgmt team were being cleaned out – not just Ronny,

Firmly believe when you announce the boss is leaving it should be with immediate effect. Remember Sounness wanted to stay till season’ send and Murray told him to get offsi immediately. One of his better decisions.

Letting Ronny stay on suggests the Board have no succession planning strategy. Another unforgiveable failure amongst so many others.

As for replacement, no firm views except please not Lenny. He’s had his time. It’s now past and Lenny should consider looking at any job but Celtic if he wants into football management.

  17. Lennon to come back to tell us itss the same old Rangers? Moyes to come in to tell us it’s the same old Rangers?

Why don’t Celtic just tell us it’s the same old Rangers?

I’ll be fully backing the team and Ronny for the rest of the season. I might even say nice things about John Collins but I haven’t made my mind up on that yet.

Thanks Ronny. You gave your all as an honest, hard working professional. It hasn’t worked out how we hoped but I wish you every success for the future. Hopefully your next boss won’t be a Pettar Lawvald, and you might get to choose your own coaching team.

    Hail hail.

  18. Hands up, all the mugs who will now be taken-in by the sacrificing of Ronny.

I feel he could attract some good players.

For us, for the club he could generate a few quid with feel good factor alone.

I think he has got plenty of friends in the game all over Europe- played at the top level in a few countries.

I believe with the right team, Hernrik Larsson could succeed here.

  22. I would love someone who has us playing in the style of Bielsa (or even the man himself). However I’m not sure that this would necessarily be successful in Scotland – I imagine Bielsa’s style assumes a certain amount of tactical sophistication from the opposition, which I’m not sure always applies in Scotland. Still, if we are going to take a punt on a manager (as opposed to appointing one of the Usual Suspects), that’s the best sort of punt to take.

  23. The Pantaloon Duck on

Ronny leaves with my very best wishes.

Whenever we are in line for a new manager, I am reminded of the only time I met Martin O’Neill. It was in the departure lounge at Edinburgh airport, a day or two after his appointment had been announced – we were both flying to Amsterdam, me to visit a friend and him to join the pundit panel for Euro 2000. I saw MON sitting there, minding his own business, so I walked across, doing my best to appear nonchalant, offered him a hand and said “Congratulations and good luck!”.

His response – “Thanks, I’ll need it!

So, my message to the new guy, whoever he may be, is “Congratulations and good luck – you’ll need it!”

Someone has got to stop this idiot Lawell…..he is a joke.

Do something about it then instead of filling the board up with a load of words.

Come on, share, whats your plan or are you just another football supporter with a sense of entitlement waiting for someone else to do it for you?

  25. Henrik has not done enough in management to suggest he could be a success here. It’d be awful to see him fail.

Neil Lennon. There’s a tale… left abruptly 2 seasons ago, with no job to walk into. Never completely specified the reasons for his departure. Now back in Glasgow and readily available for a quote on Celtic in the last 10 days or so…

His teams were (mostly) strong and had a good mentality. But the football was quite often turgid and he wasn’t above the odd humiliating result.

His time at Bolton is difficult to judge, given their financial state, but some of the revelations about his private life do not sit easy with being the next manager of Celtic. Call me old-fashioned…

The overall impression is of a manager still struggling to define himself in the game. Older and wiser, perhaps, but I worry this would be the easy compromise candidate. DD would say yes because he’s Irish. PL would say yes because he is (relatively) inexpensive and a known quantity.

  26. The Green Man says SACK THE Board on

Only a real fool would pitch a rookie manager into the Champions League.

Thats the level of rank stupidity we are dealing with…..only an idiot come come up with that strategy

  29. embramike says "the Huns are Deid" on

Not surprised at todays’s news – it was inevitable. But if we are to be acknowledged by all fans at the “pre-eminent” club in Scotland then we must continue in this decisive manner.

Now is the time to drop the tactic of “Appeasement” with regard to the the ‘new club’. We must immediately change the rhetoric against those (and we all know who they are and their association) who have for 4 years attempted to ‘control the narrative’ with regard to the liquidation and reformation of the ‘new club’.

Our new manager must clearly and unambiguously welcome the challenge from the ‘new club’ on their first appearance in the top division. Our board in any press releases must refer to them as such regardless of any attempts at intimidation.

The most notorious propagandist of the last century, Joseph Goebbels’, stated that ..

“If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it.”.

Vladimir Lenin also stated that “A lie told often enough becomes the truth.”

Anyone with an IQ greater than their shoe size knows they are a new club – even those perpetrating the ‘same club’ myth. Unfortunately for the history revisionists, this is the 21st century, the age of social media which can trap history incontrovertibly . There is also the presence of thousands of football fans who want to see the record set straight and the truth told however long it may take.

Otherwise, if the new club contrive to win the Scottish Cup and the SFA add that ‘honour’ to the record of the old club and this goes unchallenged, then the cheats and liars ‘controlling the narrative’ will have won – and that is totally unacceptable and unconscionable .

  30. Thanks RD for service I stuck by you to the end my friend, but you’ve done a good job as far as I’m concerned and will always be thankful, you where a class act, unlike some in here who even after your notice still can’t stop them selves from putting the boot in, Ronny my apologies for them, there ignorance has no boundaries .

All the very best in the future to you and your family, and once again thanks, and Hail Hail.

  31. Good Luck Ronny..

It didn’t work for you or us, despite us both desperate for it to do so..

Paul67, Yes, our enemies in the MSN have had their field day, they have deflected from the lies, denials and corruption in Scottish football at our expense. Our dislike of them has only grown.

Hopefully we both managed to depart with some dignity at the death.

Celtic will go on and we will be there to support them.
