Ronny Deila era comes to an end

976

And release! Ronny Deila had to go and a few minutes ago, Celtic confirmed that he will leave at the end of the season. I’ve bitten my tongue on this online for months, as I once before suggested we sack a manager here (April 2008) and very quickly regretted it, but as anyone I’ve spoken to privately will tell you, it’s been clear we were on the wrong track since our Champions League exit in August.

The news broke in Norway that he was leaving a few days ago, which forced everyone’s hands to make an announcement now, but I’m glad he’s going to be with us to see the league title won. It doesn’t matter who the competition is, winning the league means lots to many of us, and we’re about to part company with only the second manager in our history not to lose a league title.

For that, he will always be welcome. It would have been absurd to sack a manager two games away from winning the league.

Ronny arrived with a plan for playing football which was cruelly exposed as inadequate in Warsaw, as Legia picked us off. That was acceptable, but the plan never changed. Neither did the results in Europe. We went down to Maribor and Malmo in the same manner.

I’d never heard of Ronny before his appointment but I backed the decision at the time, as he fitted the profile of manager I wanted: not a reject from England, someone who had overachieved with a club in Europe, a student of the game. The remit was right but the candidate was wrong. I still want someone to fit that remit, as opposed to an unemployed manager who has been through the English circuit.

While I would have made the same appointment, the board take responsibility for managerial appointments, good and bad, and they got this one wrong and deserve criticism.

You will note among the appropriate criticism that one journalist, banned from Celtic Park for nearly two years for lying, has used Celtic’s current vulnerability to swing his toe-capped boots.

This is Operation Destabilise Celtic, it’s an alternative strategy to apologising for lying about Celtic, or not lying about Celtic again. It has the hallmarks of an organised PR campaign. You know the script.

Ronny, all the very best and thanks for the Roar. Go win the league with some style.

My connection is far from fragile, I’m just hacked off with DD calling the shots and bringing in his buddies. We don’t need the old pals act at Celtic but a good professional manager who puts Celtic first.

With regards Henke, I did say he’d be good to have with MON as his mentor so he could learn the ropes. I am well aware Henke is not doing too well at Helsingborg but the guy is learning.

Look , we all on this blog love Celtic and I’m certain we all want the best for our club so why should we put up with second best all the time?

Get the best we can and get back to where we belong.

There are algorithms you can use to regurgitate this stuff periodically without you even having to bother.

I thought you’d like to know – since you haven’t bothered to take your protest to the source, you clearly are open to taking the easy way out.

  3. If PL looks at the win average of Roy and Henrik as managers he might be alarmed. Roy at 38.67% and Henrik at 32.81%.

When Ronny came he was at 46%. On leaving Celtic, Ronny is at 53.38%.

Different leagues, but I suppose you still have to win.

When you look at the percentages at Celtic, maybe EPL Chairmen take our % win rate with a pinch of salt.

I think Deila to Keane would possibly be one extreme to the other, but no need for histrionics.

Part of me thinks Keane would be a good fit, particularly as he has gained more experience under another you advocate(MON), but do worry about when the going gets tough and his reactions.

That said, whoever we appoint there is no guarantee it’ll work.

First thing on the agenda is what happens with the playing staff and the coaching staff.

My point is Keane’s record is considerably more impressive than Henke’s but you wouldn’t have him in partnership with MON – because of his record, but you would have a Henke partnership. That doesn’t make sense.

Henke isn’t doing well with Helsingborg. He didn’t do that well with Landskrona or Falkenberg either.

Anyways while it’s fun to chew that fat over prospective candidates I suspect not one character written on social media will have influence on the decision.

  8. !00-1 against appointment being of the Wow! nature.

I think what will happen is that PL will remain, they will announce a Director of Football to placate our apathy (i know its more than that but restricted by my vocabulary) towards PL, then we will hire an uninspiring coach and the carnival will begin all over again.

RD had too many flaws in his plan but some of the gash he’s being blamed for is the mark of someone who doesnt have the first clue about football.

  10. I think we can realistically write off our European ambitions for next season. Whoever we bring in needs to be allowed to create a team worthy of the Champion or Europa Leagues. Demanding qualification from our current predicament within 10 weeks will only add enormous pressure on our next incumbent.

“Its the easy way out I’m afraid, and their absence has often been (wrongly) attributed to other factors, including the weather.

The attendance at the recent Hearts game suggests if their leverage is ALREADY having withdrawn their financial support, then they played that card too early – because they are a minority within a minority, at the moment.

A visible protest at the stadium could not be less effective than their current mode of operation. There’d be increased awareness and it could reach the stage the club would have to respond. Does TGM making 95 posts a week on CQN instead of the regular 75 increase the power of the message? Certainly not.

Why wouldn’t they try it? I am not questioning the legitimacy of their concerns here btw, but hitting their club with the ultimate punishment before exhausting ALL the steps to avoid it is a big error IMO”

Not taking note of non-renewals and longer than expected times for take-up of cup ticket is a bigger eror IMO.

Unhappy supporters are the symptom not the cause.

You can make that time up by posting even slightly less frequently in here or writing a program to do it for you :)

The negative publicity from a visible protest would be a bit more alarming to the PLC than a hundred posts a week read by a small % of the fanbase and ultimately lost in cyberspace.

The gamble for anyone who isn’t available until mid-late June is that the 2nd qualifying round is against teams we should be beating comfortably without a manager. its the next round that it starts to get tricky.

    ………..”……………….

It would be supreme arrogance to suggest that Celtic, in our current state, could enter the CL qualifiers at any stage without our first choice manager having had a number of weeks to work with our players.

  16. If Henrik had never played for us, never in a million years would he be being mentioned for the job. That tells you that there is no solid reasoning behind appointing him manager – none.

It’s all just emotion – based entirely on memories of him as a player.

Likewise if Keane wasn’t Irish, and instead had been a hard-edged, abrasive but effective midfielder from England… does anyone honestly believe he would be quoted?

Again – it’s emotion. He’s a fan, the epitome of the Fightin’ Irish, so he’s a popular character within our support. but his actual managerial record is very poor.

  17. Oh, in the interest a balance the Magic Hat’s win %,

    Brentford, 51.28%

    Huns, 76.09%

    Total, 60.48%

Different leagues, no Europe I know. The argument will be that he has learned his trade, done it the hard way etc etc.

Steve Evens big Celtic fan – told his Chairman live on Sky Sports “I pick the team I’m in charge of football matters and if thats not the case I’m out of here” so cant see him getting on with PL !!!!!

Ryan Giggs currently “insecure” at Man Utd so his PR team doing a job to get him on a few job lists – cant see him being our next Manager

Ronnie’s period was hardly an era, neither being long or distinct but was indeed a gamble that did not pay off.

Both Mowbray and Lenny appointment could equally be described as a gamble, one being far more successful than the other!

My worry is that we will not learn from this given that the same decision makers are in place!

Perhaps Dermott will provide a curve ball and make or heavily influence the appointment this time.

Never spoke to so many medium to long term season ticket holders, that are seriously considering not renewing.

This needs to be a good appointment which starts the road to bring the club and fans closer together, but the board need to start re-engaging as well on so many other levels.

I would be that guy you mention. You’re dead right, back to back league cups. Have to admit I checked up on you. How could I forget we beat Thistle 3-0 in ’56? Still 2 LC in over 10 years was no threat to old Rangers’ supremacy. Big Jock was the man.

    ———————————–

I recall hearing we had won the LC after a replay, it was a daytime game and my da didnae bother taking time off tae go tae it. It was only the following season it gained any significance to us Tims. We didnae win it again for another 8 years, against the same club tae.

    ————————-

    TT,

Aye, 1967, year of the 5 or was it 6 trophies everything played for, including the Big One. Do you remember the oil tanker the Torrey Canyon that grounded in the English Channel that summer, the terrible pollution it caused and the trouble refloating it?

The joke at the time, i believe cracked on the team bus to an away game, by Jinky or Tommy Burns. “We lifted everything except the Torrey Canyon.” I know it loses a wee bit in the writing, but it was funny at the time.

  21. 57+8=65, 1965 was the year of the next league cup. I think I’ve it right this time. But’67 ws the big year. Talking about the Big One and the national league titles, or in some cases the top three or four in the national League, 4th in England say is as good as first, since the league is just a passport to European competition. Did anybody ever foresee that? Of course for us first makes it a bit easier to reach Group stage.

  22. Ronnys true win stats, not what people think they are, I’d believe him, before anyone in here.

“My stats are not that bad. When you win 65 per cent of your games it is quite okay. I don’t think I will ever have that at another club in my life – unless I take over at Barcelona and do fantastic! But the important games we have lost
