Ronny Deila era comes to an end

976

And release! Ronny Deila had to go and a few minutes ago, Celtic confirmed that he will leave at the end of the season. I’ve bitten my tongue on this online for months, as I once before suggested we sack a manager here (April 2008) and very quickly regretted it, but as anyone I’ve spoken to privately will tell you, it’s been clear we were on the wrong track since our Champions League exit in August.

The news broke in Norway that he was leaving a few days ago, which forced everyone’s hands to make an announcement now, but I’m glad he’s going to be with us to see the league title won. It doesn’t matter who the competition is, winning the league means lots to many of us, and we’re about to part company with only the second manager in our history not to lose a league title.

For that, he will always be welcome. It would have been absurd to sack a manager two games away from winning the league.

Ronny arrived with a plan for playing football which was cruelly exposed as inadequate in Warsaw, as Legia picked us off. That was acceptable, but the plan never changed. Neither did the results in Europe. We went down to Maribor and Malmo in the same manner.

I’d never heard of Ronny before his appointment but I backed the decision at the time, as he fitted the profile of manager I wanted: not a reject from England, someone who had overachieved with a club in Europe, a student of the game. The remit was right but the candidate was wrong. I still want someone to fit that remit, as opposed to an unemployed manager who has been through the English circuit.

While I would have made the same appointment, the board take responsibility for managerial appointments, good and bad, and they got this one wrong and deserve criticism.

You will note among the appropriate criticism that one journalist, banned from Celtic Park for nearly two years for lying, has used Celtic’s current vulnerability to swing his toe-capped boots.

This is Operation Destabilise Celtic, it’s an alternative strategy to apologising for lying about Celtic, or not lying about Celtic again. It has the hallmarks of an organised PR campaign. You know the script.

Ronny, all the very best and thanks for the Roar. Go win the league with some style.

Sampaoli is currently looking for the right club to manage, I think he and Celtic would be the perfect combination.

    Hail Hail.

  2. Very sorry for Ronny, a good man with a good football philosophy. I can’t see how changing manager this summer will improve our chances of CL qualification.

Listen….just look how DD and PL operate.

They will not pay for a decent manager…..they want success on the cheap, and that is just not going to happen.

So logically….they will get a yes man or a rookie….thats what they do.

Now…id suggest that anybody that wants to throw a rookie manager into the CL….is a fecking idiot.

    I ask you….is that wise?

This is the level of rank stupidity we face.

  11. Lol, so the new manager we pick has to get us into the CL? Ffs get a reality check and know your place in European football, at best Europa Cup, that’s it deal with it, and maybe not to far in that either, the economics of the game went past us years ago, gone are those days, TV money and a small country puts us way behind, and it’s not a level playing field either in my opinion.

The truth hurts, but better lower your boom and working yourself up than thinking you are better than you are, there’s a new club coming up to the SPFL next year Whois old club thought like that, and they now are in the process of liquidation, it is what it is, like it or lump it.

If Peter Lawell’s imagination only extends as far as Neil Lennon then I very much doubt that I’ll be back.

  13. NL– No, no and thrice no.

If he comes back it is desperation all round.

We really are lions being led by a second rate pair of donkeys.

  14. Sampaoli,mentioned by Vespacide earlier,would be a fantastic signing.Forget about the dross from England,Moyes etc,serial failures,old players,who has done well?.

This guy is one of the very best. The Chile team he managed were a joy to watch.Massive reputation in SA.

Ronny was a gamble that did not work out as hoped.Nothing wrong in trying. At least he will go leaving us still on the 10 trail.Yes,we will win this league. So many people forget how unlucky he was with key injuries. Not an excuse, fact.Losing VVD,and Jason, also a massive blow.manager needs luck.Ronny had none.Last minute goal to Molde.Efe blundering against Fenerbache, when 2 up.Leading in Amsterdam, then a man sent off.At home, the Inverness robbery, and man sent off against Ross County, probably robbed us of a treble and double.

Some on here, and in the wider support, should be ashamed of themselves today.Yes,he had to go,but the vitriol from many would have put the SMSM to shame. He was The Celtic Manager,FFS.

Will NL bring back the thunder…again.

    I doubt it…..but carry on.

  16. Go tell the Spartim on

Bielsa or Sampaoli, given a freer hand in the “football dept” would be my choice, sadly i doubt it will happen, the PLC will pick someone that the majority can at least recognise, you can see from on here what the underlying trait is, “a former celt”.

Lets not go backwards with a re appointment, my interpretation from P67’s article we will be going for a similar type of appointment of RD, hopefully one that learns from there mistakes.

Whilst its a time for introspection for the PLC, RD and it bloody well should be for some of the senior players (they’re more widely known than the injuction 3 some), maybe the support should have a look at themselves.

who the funk, boos a team then claims to be a supporter, too many want the accolade of being part of the best support in the world without putting in any of the effort.

  17. I’m optimistic about the future for Celtic, Ronnie has done a lot of good work restructuring the development squad and will leave us with a few good players almost ready to make a name for themselves in the first team, Alas the first team needs a drastic overhaul in the new season it’s a pity he cant see this through I would love to keep big Deila here in some capacity, he’s a cracking guy.

I had it in mind that we would be looking for a new manager so my considered opinion is bring in Jorge Sampaoli and maybe use Ronnie as director of football if he would like to continue to develop the club.

    Hail Hail.

  18. Fair comment, Paul67. I too don’t fancy someone who has not covered themselves in glory in England.

I too would like our next manager to be cut from the same cloth as our current incumbent.

If there were to be an exception, I would happy with Alex Reid of Norwich, if he became available, if Norwich were to be relegated and he was prepared to return to Scotland.

Guess that criteria also rules out Moyes even the Special One. Not just NFL.

    We must be aiming big.

Thanks to RD for doing your best and releasing this story in Norway, otherwise we would still be reading propaganda and be called Huns etc (by some on here) for asking any any questions.

Maybe you were just too decent for the PLC.

  27. Better late than never!

I wish Ronnie well and hope that he finds his niche in the game sometime soon. When this finally blows over – his 2 league titles with us will hopefully enhance his CV.

As for likely replacement candidates – forget; SPL managers, KoK, GC and NL (one Barca doesn’t make a summer). None of these guys have the credentials/experience to re-establish a foothold in European Competition – a must before CFC find themselves plummeting down the UEFA Coefficients.

What we need is a Ranieri-type – someone with European experience to come in and knock the current player pool into a ‘lean mean fighting machine’ – weed out the weak and dissenters and astutely add key players that can take us onto a better level.

Otherwise we will be playing June/July European It’s a Knock-out for the foreseeable future. :-(

  28. An Teach Solais on

Good luck to Ronny and thanks for your efforts. Hopefully the experiences that you gained here will help in getting a new post. I felt that he had good ideas e.g. youth development, scientific approach to diet, exercise etc but the magnitude of this job was too heavy. You were hampered right from the start with senior players unable or unwilling to adapt to continental approach to the game (Paul Le Guen, anyone) and a rigid system which was beyond the ken or willingness of some of our prima donnas.

Yes, you made mistakes but you were not the only one- lengthy list to follow.

The choice now is play safe type of Scottish football designed to do well domestically (what is Scotland’s FIFA ranking?) or a coach who will encourage the more traditional Celtic exciting type of play, rearing our own and being able to compete with at least some of the European teams. Whoever is appointed will, almost certainly, not be universally accepted on this blog and may have to be a bit of a b**** with some of our players. God help him. HH

    PL’s sewage counts against you.

However the one positive here is you can report back just how badly let down we have been with his agent and heated driveway friendly business plan.

  30. time for change on

Sorry to see Ronny go, unfortunately it has been on the cards for awhile…good bye John Collins as well!!!

Interesting to see what our new management course is going to be set, Moyes, Neil, Henrick or Keane and it’ll be the end of the line for me as a season ticket holder…. some others I may consider giving them another year.

My personal choice would be someone like Rafa Benetez.

On the point of the Board I would caution against the departure of Peter Lawwell, he represents us in too many high places for that to be lost, those of you will still remember Terry Cassidy, Jock Brown and Peter (/) McDonald will realise how important his business and political skills are….just stay away from the football side.

    HH

  31. Dontbrattbakkinanger on

Maybe hoopslegend CHris Sutton could do the job.

He had plenty of advice for the current incumbent.

  32. So Ronny leaving at the end of the season but announces it now when we’re, according to our host “2 games from the title”

If we win 2 and lose 3 that gives us 82 points.

Aberdeen win their remaining 5 games would give them 83 points.

So quick to blame the SMSM on here and the “not lazy journalism” comment make me laugh.

I’m hoping that Aberdeen drop points on Friday as I’m not confident about Sunday.

  33. Vespacide, I love the idea of Sampaoli, and I’d be happy with him or someone who plays the game the same way. We were stuffed on Sunday by a football-playing manager, I’d rather have someone with a modern approach than just an ex-Celtic player or a blood and snotters manager. We’d need to allow the person some patience.

My feeling though is that DD will call the shots, and he will go for someone who has the visibility to boost his “brand image”- i.e. makes the club visible to the UK media. We tend to see the club in isolation, but club owners look at what they can do for their whole portfolio (Abramovic, Murray, etc.). So I’d guess someone with visibility, like Tim Sherwood or Moyes – someone who DD has heard of. Hope I’m wrong.
