Ronny Deila era comes to an end

976

And release! Ronny Deila had to go and a few minutes ago, Celtic confirmed that he will leave at the end of the season. I’ve bitten my tongue on this online for months, as I once before suggested we sack a manager here (April 2008) and very quickly regretted it, but as anyone I’ve spoken to privately will tell you, it’s been clear we were on the wrong track since our Champions League exit in August.

The news broke in Norway that he was leaving a few days ago, which forced everyone’s hands to make an announcement now, but I’m glad he’s going to be with us to see the league title won. It doesn’t matter who the competition is, winning the league means lots to many of us, and we’re about to part company with only the second manager in our history not to lose a league title.

For that, he will always be welcome. It would have been absurd to sack a manager two games away from winning the league.

Ronny arrived with a plan for playing football which was cruelly exposed as inadequate in Warsaw, as Legia picked us off. That was acceptable, but the plan never changed. Neither did the results in Europe. We went down to Maribor and Malmo in the same manner.

I’d never heard of Ronny before his appointment but I backed the decision at the time, as he fitted the profile of manager I wanted: not a reject from England, someone who had overachieved with a club in Europe, a student of the game. The remit was right but the candidate was wrong. I still want someone to fit that remit, as opposed to an unemployed manager who has been through the English circuit.

While I would have made the same appointment, the board take responsibility for managerial appointments, good and bad, and they got this one wrong and deserve criticism.

You will note among the appropriate criticism that one journalist, banned from Celtic Park for nearly two years for lying, has used Celtic’s current vulnerability to swing his toe-capped boots.

This is Operation Destabilise Celtic, it’s an alternative strategy to apologising for lying about Celtic, or not lying about Celtic again. It has the hallmarks of an organised PR campaign. You know the script.

Ronny, all the very best and thanks for the Roar. Go win the league with some style.

  1. Deila gone but Lawwell remains.

It is always so. The one who made the terrible appointment keeps his job, free to make another pig’s ear of it again.

How many of us have worked with/for people like that?

We won’t improve until there is real change.

Look at Lawwell’s manager appointments record:

BTM awful! ‘We’ll just have to take it on the chin.’

NFL: he paraded him round the CFC supporters clubs to gauge support before appointing him.

Refused to sit at the back of the bus.Successful.

RD: this was his vision for the future. Shocking!

But Lawwell is empowered to make the next appointment. Who actually trusts him?

    How does that work?

As for Davy Moyes, being the next manager of Celtic,I have this to say,if you can’t hack it at Man Utd,or in Spain, what chance of being a success in Scotland with Celtic, as far as I’m concerned, if Lennon is made manager ,I will not renew ,I just dont like the man,

    ===================

Anyone else you don’t like, for completeness?

Mind the time we wheeled out Dr Venglos and there was a full CP every week anyway. Supporters.

The sense of entitlement not to mention the fickleness of some so called supporters is incredible.

  3. We’ve recruited Eastern European players at Celtic.

What about Eastern European managers/coaches ?

Wonder why they aren’t considered or approached.

  4. Y Not67

Now take your time. I’ll refer you to Kojo for a lesson in creating multiple users to swing it your way.

    Good luck.

Still laughin here! Keep up the good work. I appreciate your efforts.

Imagine the irony of someone not caring what someone else thinks of them to go to such lengths!

Have you noticed how much I am enjoying this? You could get a job with Level 5 PR by end of day at this rate.

    Mirror mirror…

You remind me of that song of your other favourite 2 old firm teams.

I’ll steal a line to explain:

No one likes us we don’t care (unless we don’t like it) :))))))

  5. The Green Man says SACK THE Board on

Hello….is that the good European manager

    GEM: Yes, speaking

PL: Its Big Peter the magnificent here, just wondered if you would like to be the new manager of MY club

GEM: Ah..The Wonderful Celtic….I have often admired Celtic.

PL: We can offer you a fantastic bonus system…..and er….our…sorry, My wonderful fans

GEM: Splendid….And what about the transfer budget…i would imagine you would want to strengthen that department.

PL:…MM, well aye….but, you know….we were hoping you would do it for nothing…..but we can offer you extensive use of our catering facilities…not actually in the resturant….but at our kiosks.

    GEM: Nice talking to you…BYE

    PL: Hello, Hello…..you still there….Hello…..hellooooooo

  6. Greenpinata (11:32), hear, hear! “To certain players I will not be so forgiving.” They should hang their heads in shame.

79CAPS (12:03), absolutely. Too many clubs seem to think that changing manager every couple of years, with the inevitable squad rebuild/reshuffle, actually makes them more likely to succeed. The reality is quite the opposite. What brings success is stability, not living in a constant state of flux.

Now that the meeja and a huge proportion of the “supporters” have chased Ronny out, who will we end up with next? Some coach/manager who is currently (or soon to be) unemployed due to failing at their previous club? Or can we actually cherry pick someone with a successful track record, and manage to entice them to taking on a job in the footballing back-water that is Scotland?

Might Jose Mourinho have a soft spot for us? Or perhaps we could tempt Mark Warbuton?… he seems to have done alright with far inferior resources than the next manager would have at CP!!!

  7. DONTBRATTBAKKINANGER on 20TH APRIL 2016 12:32 PM

Maybe hoopslegend CHris Sutton could do the job.

He had plenty of advice for the current incumbent.

If that was a qualification for the job there’d be a few on here who’d make any shortlist ahead of him

    At least sutty is entertaining

  8. Apricale

I can see how short termist those types of appointments are, if I can see it then you can bet your bottom dollar the tasch can too. That’s one of the reasons Ronnie got the job in the first place, but you can’t compare his CV to Jorge who is a proven winner at the highest levels.

    Hail Hail.

  9. Sampaoli sounds great. Would the language barrier be an issue? Seem to remember he blamed his English on not getting the Chelsea gig.

Would appointing him require a club appointed assistant who “knows” Scottish football a la McLeod or Collins?

If so, we shouldn’t even bother.

  10. Go tell the Spartim on

For those of you not confident about Sunday why not go along and support your team for 90 minutes, you’ll be surprised at the impact it has. instead of howls of derision for a wayward pass why not some encouragement to try again. Players playing with fear are no good to anyone, regardless of their talent. Check the goal website for the article on Pep by one of the Bayern younger players, some of our senior players should read it as well.

For those of you that doubt this, ask any of the footballing greats that have adorned our stadium about the impact a fervent support has on our team.

You all want the accolades whilst doing none of the work

    It’s actually Frankie Howard’s line.

You might have read it yesterday.

  12. Have to laugh at some on here.Kev J would love Mark Mc Ghee, someone else wanting Henrik, and these are the people telling us RD was a bad appointment.Stupidity is not only found on Hun sites.

Hoprfully there is a total clearout of the dross, giving the new guy money to spend.

Lustig,Johansen,Forrest,Scepovic, would be a start.Enough for a decent striker there and another right back.

Macjay, Scrolling back through the moon howler shift, I saw a few replies from you to a post I made last night.

I except you are British and I’m Irish. You refer to an atrocity committed by Republicans. If you want to trade in atrocities, I can assure you that my side have suffered 800 years of atrocities, so don’t go there.

    ===========================================================================

Hard to understand why you came to the conclusion that I wanted to “trade in atrocities.”

You specifically mentioned a phrase I had used and suggested it was something I had accused two individuals of.

I simply pointed out that most certainly was not the case and was related specifically to the horrific event which I referenced.

Had you not made an unfounded accusation , then I would have had no reason to “go there.”

I’ll be utterly delighted to cheer the “Ronnie Roar” as we pick up the trophy on the final day. Has the Magic hat guy at the other end introduced that dangerous creature, expectation,to that side?

  17. Any appointment is a risk, and the higher up the tree the more important it is to make a good choice.

We are not in a place for projects or rookies. We know the biggest names are beyond us, but we should be aiming for someone with a CV that includes winning trophies and competing in European competition with some measure of success.

I think I’ve written something pretty similar during recruitment phases for the last three managers …

  18. Vespacide – here’s hoping! I agree that we should go for a modern, attacking manager, who has already had some success. There are several available. And while there may be some issues in bringing them to Glasgow, the chance to mould a big club (albeit with limited funds in a crap league) is still a draw. And I’d rather we spent an extra couple of million on a manager than an extra couple of million on a dud goalscorer.

  19. Why wouldn’t we want “an unemployed manager who has been round the English circuit”?

The last time we appointed one of those, he led us to 2xCL last 16 berths.

  20. DAVIDOPOULOS

I don’t know if he can speak English but his native tongue is Spanish and I think he would learn fast enough plus it would keep him as far away from the fourth estate for as long as possible.

    Hail Hail.

I’m eagerly awaiting anouncement on CEO

I’d love there to be change of CEO but suspect a change in CEO responsibilities more likely. Whatever it will be a vast improvement on current situation, hopefully.

  29. There are a few levels of coach/manager that could be available to us.

The top being Bielsa, Yakin, Jovanovic, Sampaoli, Toral, Paco and a few others.

Then we have the Moyes, Rodgers, Keane, MoN, MoN and a few others

Then we have the one where our next will come from.

No looking forward to this unless the great moustachioed one decrees we need to pull the finger out.
