Ronny Deila era comes to an end

976

And release! Ronny Deila had to go and a few minutes ago, Celtic confirmed that he will leave at the end of the season. I’ve bitten my tongue on this online for months, as I once before suggested we sack a manager here (April 2008) and very quickly regretted it, but as anyone I’ve spoken to privately will tell you, it’s been clear we were on the wrong track since our Champions League exit in August.

The news broke in Norway that he was leaving a few days ago, which forced everyone’s hands to make an announcement now, but I’m glad he’s going to be with us to see the league title won. It doesn’t matter who the competition is, winning the league means lots to many of us, and we’re about to part company with only the second manager in our history not to lose a league title.

For that, he will always be welcome. It would have been absurd to sack a manager two games away from winning the league.

Ronny arrived with a plan for playing football which was cruelly exposed as inadequate in Warsaw, as Legia picked us off. That was acceptable, but the plan never changed. Neither did the results in Europe. We went down to Maribor and Malmo in the same manner.

I’d never heard of Ronny before his appointment but I backed the decision at the time, as he fitted the profile of manager I wanted: not a reject from England, someone who had overachieved with a club in Europe, a student of the game. The remit was right but the candidate was wrong. I still want someone to fit that remit, as opposed to an unemployed manager who has been through the English circuit.

While I would have made the same appointment, the board take responsibility for managerial appointments, good and bad, and they got this one wrong and deserve criticism.

You will note among the appropriate criticism that one journalist, banned from Celtic Park for nearly two years for lying, has used Celtic’s current vulnerability to swing his toe-capped boots.

This is Operation Destabilise Celtic, it’s an alternative strategy to apologising for lying about Celtic, or not lying about Celtic again. It has the hallmarks of an organised PR campaign. You know the script.

Ronny, all the very best and thanks for the Roar. Go win the league with some style.

    How do you know?

IMO that’s the crux of this situation.

If the Great Desmondo allows PL to appoint then it’s just more of the same.

Why does this spring to mind ???

I can’t say I really know anything mate – just my assumptions. I think Dermot wanted Roy Keane in at the time. For whatever reason, that didn’t happen. Ronnie got the job, but he doesn’t strike me as a Dermot kind of appointment. So I’m assuming he went with what someone else suggested to him. Won’t want the same mistake to be made again. As I say – pure speculation. All my own work though.. :-)))

Gordon Strachan would be my ship steadier (If he was interested). Other than him it’s all too much of an unknown quantity for me, with too many variables, to be firmly convinced with any candidate mentioned to date. However, first things first; If there’s to be a truly fresh start and we’re all to be able to put the obvious acrimony behind us; fans, football dept, staff, and PLC alike, then the owner to whom the equipment in the inaugural see-how-far-you-can-boot-the scheming-little-pr**s-balls-down the Celtic-Way, would remain attached to Kris Commons for undermining a Celtic Manager. For what my opinion is worth, I’m convinced Ronny could have started to turn things around had he his own team in place from the start and had been more ruthless with the prima donnas. Instead ,at times, I felt too many were happy to work his ticket out the door for their own ends. And that, to use a topical emotive word, leaves me more bitter right now than any other issue.

If that’s what he said and your opinion of him is correct, it sounds like a match made in ……….London rd

Does that matter ? most of the first team at the moment seem to just do what they like anyway.

I agree that the post by Declan was bang out of order and hope that the author himself will recognise that and ask for it to be deleted.

Also, we have major problems ahead of us. Could we refrain from hurling insults like “Liar” at one another? Surely we can agree/disagree with other posters without pushing the insult button. All in my most humble opinion of course. HH

  6. CultsBhoy can not relate to Celtic Board ambitions on or off the park on

Lenny is a stalking horse I suspect to get other candidates out of the woodwork. There won’t be a long queue. if there is no queue it might just be Lenny’s gig?

The appointment of Deila was similar to Cifcti – I was not taken in by the ‘hey we landed our number one candidate’ proclamations. It was clearly a ‘its all we could get’ appointment.

I suspect a few of the players who have undone Deila will now be bricking it in a ‘careful what you wish for’ kind of way. Many will surely be following RD out of the door..? The first 3 out should be Commons, Brown and Mulgrew.

  7. GuyFawkesaforeverhero on

I’m disappointed about this announcement and I hope Ronny has been able to bear some influence as far as deciding when to go public about his position.

I don’t believe any Celt should welcome the situation that our manager is to be humiliated, from now till the end of the season, by the baying insults of five sets of opposing fans. No doubt, from what I’ve witnessed around the country for two years, some of our own will join their chorus.

I’m inclined to the view that our Board is using Ronny’s future dismissal as a pretext to delay the season ticket renewal process.

The players’ performance on Sunday was inadequate and unprofessional but I stood to clap them from the Hampden pitch and I’ll stand to clap them onto Celtic Park this week-end. On we go, to 5IAR.

  8. Good luck in the future Ronny a truly nice guy but if the truth be told really nice guys don’t normally win much in football. That goes against my grain to admit that but it is a fact of life. Go on and win the league Ronny and you will always be remembered. You can only give your best in life but sometimes your best is not good enough especially if you are relying on other people.

Lenny – love the guy but that ship has sailed – not for me.

Has Owen Coyle’s granny spoken yet?

  9. Cultsbhoy

With all due respect the new manager will divide opinion on day one if the debate here is anything to go by and those with an agenda will use to confirm their biased view.

I liked Ronny and I liked his ideas. I stayed in his camp for far too long probably but that’s the kind of guy I am and I’ll try and do the same next time. I’d like one of these exotic types from overseas and not a Henrik, Keane or Lenny type…

One of the topics we don’t talk enough about here (for obvious reasons) is how we as a support have changed. We have an entitled view I never use to see when we were bouncing back with MON but the context is so utterly changed that with no competition locally as such we’ve turned in on ourselves.

Sorry for the ramble but I’d be excited at the South American guy and still have to wiki him…..people eh ?

Totally disagree with Nicholas. Think it is the correct decision to announce it now.

  11. Clashcitybhoy on

    Paul 67 et al

As we move onto the inevitable circus about RDs replacement we would do well to remember who we are.

Aside from our tradition, we are an upper middle sized world football brand, playing in a league of predominantly local / community clubs.

Our structure is built around a British style manager, managing every aspect of the club…that doesn’t mean we need a British citizen as manager, but it does mean that unless we radically change our business model over a 3/4 year period, we need that style of manager, or someone who can adapt to it.

Early doors, I didn’t fancy Deila, but in retrospect I wonder if he could ever have succeeded.

He came from a league of community clubs, working in a DoF / Head Coach model, where crowds were lucky to reach 5 figures.

I am sure there were more at Ronny’s CO press conferences than at some of the games where he was previously manager.

He also had pressure from sponsors, a hostile press, the Glasgow goldfish bowl, and a fan base whose expectations were those of a global rather than community club.

It would be interesting to know what % of his time Ronny spent on tactics/ scouting / coaching / managing at CP vs his previous club. My guess is there would be huge difference as he gets dragged into everything from looking for a place to stay to dealing with agents.

I have no idea whether our board read this blog or not, I suspect they do, and if they do I would urge them to have a damn good think about what they want / need from a manager.

It’s great to see names brandied about of foreign coaches with some success, but realistically could they cope with the dramatic upheaval that comes with managing Celtic.

If they do go down the foreign route, make sure it’s not their first job outside their homeland.

I know Paul 67 was dismissive of ex Championship managers, but , if it was me I would look at a managerial profile that served us well , in the MoN and WGS frame.

  12. garygillespieshamstring on

Get shot of the players who have stolen their wages. I know it won’t happen but I would love Ronny to name and shame.

  13. Ronny will leave with my very best wishes.

It just did not work out.

The appointment of Jorge Sampaoli would be a bold one, and would be welcomed by me.

But bold is not an adjective I would use to describe the Celtic board.

Sampaoli is in his mid 50s and has over 20 years experience of coaching/managing.

But he has never coached in Europe. Don’t know if that would be a problem.

    HH!!

  14. eddieinkirkmichael on

Disappointed Ronny will be staying till end of season as this means his silence has been bought and he’s signed a gagging order as Lenny did before him.

We are now no further forward in knowing how the club really operates internally on issues such as who appoints the assistants to the coach, who decides who we sign. Can the coach veto a signing? So many questions remain unanswered again.

Can’t wait for the next failure to take charge, couldn’t really care less who get’s the job as he’ll be hounded just like Ronny was.

Ronny was right about one thing , the Celtic support don’t do development they want instant success. I read you all over the season saying with our budget we should always win the league, so by the majority reasoning on here we should never again lose the league as Rangers wont ever have the finances to compete. We should always qualify for CL group stage as well according to the majority.

The new coach has already been set up to fail.

Farewell Ronny, I hope you will go on to be successful and happy , wherever your future may lie.

  17. Clashcitybhoy

Good points fella. I guess the goalposts have changed and our expectations are beyond winning the domestic league (that should be a slam dunk with our resources).

This is about fighting against the tide that has shifted in Europe with the EPL leading the way and how we can be a standard Europa team (which is where I think we are) and doing our best to punch into the Champions League (which is our stretch). Getting someone who can build a team and a system that survives against better teams in European competition (as it’s also our cash cow) tells me that someone unemployed from the English Championship is too much a risk.

Having us still on the radar when structural change comes is paramount – arguably we are just keeping our head above water and can’t drop further.

  18. The Johnatron on

Guus Hiddink anyone? Seem to recall he was quite complimentary when he was linked with us in the past. Big name, big reputation.

  19. No.13 Shorts at 1.00pm, very good post and I agree with you 100%. Celtic undermined Ronny from Day One by imposing Collins and Kennedy. They need to go as well. Collins brings nothing to the table. Sviatchenko has done more for our defence in four months than Kennedy has in two years.

Ronny’s story may have had a different ending if Collins and Kennedy had been shown the door at the end of last season. I still feel Ronny had something to offer.

  20. An amazing time for the supporters over the coming weeks, baseless rumours are the lifeblood of the game and they will be in limitless supply. I know Lenny has already been spotted in the back of a fake taxi.

  21. FieldofDreams

    Great point about Sviatchenko.

On your other point, Ronny should have been man enough to either demand his own team, or at least have a say on the Scots the club wanted to lumber him with.

By acquiescing he emphasised his weakness.

  22. I don’t see why the CL is beyond us, many on here seem to think it is.

Plenty of bleating on here about Malmo and Maribor and how we should be beating them, they made the CL and it’s riches.

  23. It certainly has been coming sadly for a good long while. Ronny is a decent guy who sadly was way out of his depth. I’m certain he will go on to be a decent manager as his “model” is along the right lines.

Now the speculation begins and all sorts of names will be tossed around.

My preference would be WGS or perhaps Moyes, but whoever it is has to sort things out big time among the players as too many are on a free meal ticket.

I don’t know how well Henrik is doing in Sweden but I would not be unhappy to him and his professionalism ate Celtic Park.

There is one guy who I most certainly don’t want,is Roy Keane, good Celt, but diabolical manager.

What we need though is a TEAM who play as such. It is no coincidence that the top two in the EPL have that in spades – -team effort, guys who put their lives on the line for their team mates.

  24. Anyone found the big picture yet ?

In hindsight was the appointment of Ronny innovative or suitably subservient ?

Only the guy who hired him & picked his assistants can truly answer my question.

We have given oxygen to operation destabilise. Rather than strangle them.

Their opinions mean he haw to moi.

The only thing I give a Bombay duck about is , are we going to learn from the mistakes.

    Plenty of them.

Hope Ronny drops at least 4 this weekend.

    It will tell us plenty.

  25. Ronny was only ever Lawwells next victim.

Lots of stuff gets revealed in a crisis. And this is a crisis.

The Celtic board, to a man, are cowards and liars. They are hiding and they had to make an announcement. Of course it’s right Ronny goes but he should be gone now. But the board have no contingency and no plan. They are complacent, arrogant and lazy.

And what does this crisis reveal of Paul and cqn? It simply confirms that this site is a propaganda peddling site, run to spread “squirrels” and misinformation.

For Paul to claim he knew Delian had to go after Europe! Why not say anything then Paul? And for him to claim he wants a similar appointment just shows the depth of complacent arrogance that abounds within CP.

And of course he can’t criticise Lawwell and co. They have presided over disaster and Paul loved telling us how clever it all was.

This was an obvious disaster, signposted for years.

We supporters are to blame for letting it happen. We now must take responsibility for ensuring that the real cause, the board, do not somehow survive.

Finally this guff Paul about the msm trying to destabilise us. What another squirrel. The board have destabilised Celtic. They colluded in corruption and downsizing and mismanagement. It’s about. As bad as you can get.

Don’t patronise us with saying a big boy did it and ran away.

Lawwell and co need to go and they need to go now. Otherwise no one should venture near cp unless it’s to protest outside.

Despite everything we have a chance to move on. But if we let this corrupt leeching board survive we sign Celtics death warrant.

  26. If we are. Going to be hard headed about Ronny then the same should apply tp he assistants.

There should be no talk of Kennedy being accommodated within the club.

He accepted the job and someone took the vacancy.

No sentimentality,he was part of what has been deemed to be failure

Same applies to Collins,of course, but there will be few, if any, who will say that he should remain.

Meanwhile, be there on Sunday !

  27. The problem IMO this season is that senior players did not take any responsibility on the field, they are prima donnas who only bothered about themselves and their small clique.I know he is not everyone’s cup of tea but a player like Joey Barton would have booted a few of them up the a–e ,and he would not stand back and let Sevco piss all over us.Another thing he can pass a ball not like some of our midfielders.

Good luck Ronny ,it was not to be.HH

  28. I have not posted since Sunday but I’ve been reading everyone’s summaries here and now, suggestions for manager.

Disappointed that Ronny was rarely unable to change tactics in crunch matches or even have studied the opposition – maybe he assumed that his style of playing would always impose themselves over the course of 90 minutes based on possession / no of shots. I liked the idea of fitter players but hardly saw it by October. I think the team still has a lot of talent in there, though.

I have not seen many of the candidates mentioned – it seems that there is a clash of cultures in the style of manager we all want. Either way, the candidate has less than 6 weeks to prepare CL qualification and he cannot fail. Sevco, Hearts and Aberdeen will be breathing down our neck next season.

If this is taken into account then I believe the new manager will not make wholesale changes to the current team – he does not have time. There will be few signings available or fit for the CLs (all the best players will be in the Euros this summer).

PLG at the zombies….. RD at Celtic …. two younger continental managers who came in with a lot of upside, promising/demanding changes in style of football, better fitness and more professionalism from the players … faster, fitter football was the RD term as I recall …..

in both cases, it didn’t happen, and for the most the players seem not to be listening to them. At Sevco, the players openly rebelled, and, if even some of the rumors are true, there were problems at Celtic ….

going forward, would we have the same problem if we hire another continental manager, or even a progressive scottish manager?

are the players too set in their way? Do the players have too much control in the modern game in scotland?

I dont know the answer. Just wondering out loud…..
