Ronny Deila era comes to an end

976

And release! Ronny Deila had to go and a few minutes ago, Celtic confirmed that he will leave at the end of the season. I’ve bitten my tongue on this online for months, as I once before suggested we sack a manager here (April 2008) and very quickly regretted it, but as anyone I’ve spoken to privately will tell you, it’s been clear we were on the wrong track since our Champions League exit in August.

The news broke in Norway that he was leaving a few days ago, which forced everyone’s hands to make an announcement now, but I’m glad he’s going to be with us to see the league title won. It doesn’t matter who the competition is, winning the league means lots to many of us, and we’re about to part company with only the second manager in our history not to lose a league title.

For that, he will always be welcome. It would have been absurd to sack a manager two games away from winning the league.

Ronny arrived with a plan for playing football which was cruelly exposed as inadequate in Warsaw, as Legia picked us off. That was acceptable, but the plan never changed. Neither did the results in Europe. We went down to Maribor and Malmo in the same manner.

I’d never heard of Ronny before his appointment but I backed the decision at the time, as he fitted the profile of manager I wanted: not a reject from England, someone who had overachieved with a club in Europe, a student of the game. The remit was right but the candidate was wrong. I still want someone to fit that remit, as opposed to an unemployed manager who has been through the English circuit.

While I would have made the same appointment, the board take responsibility for managerial appointments, good and bad, and they got this one wrong and deserve criticism.

You will note among the appropriate criticism that one journalist, banned from Celtic Park for nearly two years for lying, has used Celtic’s current vulnerability to swing his toe-capped boots.

This is Operation Destabilise Celtic, it’s an alternative strategy to apologising for lying about Celtic, or not lying about Celtic again. It has the hallmarks of an organised PR campaign. You know the script.

Ronny, all the very best and thanks for the Roar. Go win the league with some style.

  1. It is the right decision to announce the parting of the ways with Deila now.

Unless with somehow fail to win the league ………then it will have been a disasterous decision.

Maribor have done it twice in the last few seasons, once at our expense. I’ve no doubt we’ll make the group stages but I’d guess like Maribor would see themselves as a Europa team. I think realistically we are a Europa team with the chance of being the outlyer from time to time into the champions league. Hope that makes sense.

Difficult to comprehend the posts which have a go at PAUL67s take on affairs.

He has tried very hard not to blame anyone-that point is for another day, perhaps,or for anyone else to make-and pull the support together. That is an approach which I would find difficult to have put into words, but Paul has steered the ship somewhat adroitly here.

Yes,I know where I lay the blame, but it is not the time for it.

Another Títere for green of Celtic Glasgow

Of all the sensation moving continents, Jose Maria Títere, to be new knighted life guard of Celtic green catholics football in Glasgow of Scotland. The fantastic opportunity to be one of the losing team coach classic old company will be yours. He will be supported by the young genius Simon Donnelly on the bench and Bobby Petta, the Dutch master of the bands. Green Catholic team will have to pay the clause of 100,000,000 pesos biscuit factory equipment. The Catholic coach will have to beat his old rival and immoral enemy, the Rangers Protestant Glasgow, to keep the generation of domination of Scottish football while winning several matches in Europe without any real budget but can not choose the right players with special abilities for such epic, irrational but with big cojones challenge.

Despite everything we have a chance to move on. But if we let this corrupt leeching board survive we sign Celtics death warrant.

    but we’re dead already?

what are you going to do to save us all from this second death. whats your plan outside of lots of words?

  7. I’ve not posted in a while.

Ronny has to go. However, if we get Moyes then there is every chance that the next time we play Sevco they will dominate possession.

Hearts dominated possession when we beat them 3-1 at Celtic Park recently.

Sevco play a style where the players play close together and constantly move into different zones to offer options. It makes passing easier. However, they found it very difficult to create anything against us because we limited their space in the final third.

When we won possession and attacked we looked like scoring goals, indeed, we had 33 shots to their 9 (of the 9 only 3 bothered our goalie).

Play that game 10 times and we win 9 IMO, indeed, they never got beyond us once after Erik came on.

Talk of domination only works if you put more emphasie on possession. Most people would rather see shots on goal – see Bayern demolishing Barca for example.

Moyes style is usually more direct, the players are further away from each other, therefore, every chance Sevco would dominate against a Moyes team. Indeed, Brentford under Warburton did it to bigger teams in the Championship.

If you watch the game again you see that we should have won the game on Sunday, plenty goalscoring opportunites and they had little.

Getting passed around is nothing new to us, Ajax did it, Qarabag did it….

Its not always about who has the better players, it’s about where the players are on the pitch.

Mowbray domniated possession with West Brom in the EPL but lost games.

If you want a manager to play them at their own game then look at Rodgers.

  8. Bobby I am firmly of the view that cqn is part of the problem at cp. it too has become arrogant, complacent and lazy.

  9. I am in full support in the way the board has managed our financial policy over the last decade. It is understandable given our position in world football and the league in which we play. Sometimes though, like now, that policy should be adjusted.

I am not advocating we go into multi millions of pounds of debt but we need to raise our level of ambition somewhat, specifically in regards to our next management appointment. My fear is that the board will just repeat the failure of the last two years if we do not invest adequately.

We have all now witnessed the gamble of bringing in a manager on the cheap. We have been lucky that we have had no competition in the SPL to challenge us for the last two titles, thankfully.

Now is the time for our board to raise the stakes, especially with that shower gaining promotion. If they appoint the likes of Lennon, Keane, Strachan etc it will signal that there truly is no ambition at board level. We should be in a position to invest on success due to the boards financial management this last decade. Now is the time to appoint a proven, quality manager, no more gambles, no more projects. Lets get this right this time.

Can’t argue with that. My biggest head scratcher in all of this has been the scouting department – they’d be fired in any other line of work for wasting valuable resources. Our sustainability means we must keep replenishing against a backdrop that our players will go to bigger leagues if the platform in the ECL provides it (as in Victor). Massively important to keep the assembly line going at home and through scouting.

Now,I’ll be perfectly honest with you here. I respect and admire your viewpoint. I largely agree with it,in fact. I know exactly where you are coming from with your criticism of the way that Celtic are being run-into the ground,IMO,in order to facilitate a false competition.

There’s a wee difference, bud. I still go into every matchday with hope in my heart. And I bet you do too.

The difference is,my hope is for a Celtic victory. A Celtic victory which which will not only contradict, but vanquish,my fears.

You seem to hope for a Celtic defeat which will validate your opinion.

That is clearly a) not a slanderous thing to say or b) reason for gossip…..

I’ll check him out for an ‘off the record’ insight……

  27. Italiabhoy at 1.19, fair point. I wonder whether Ronny thought he wouldn’t get the job if he didn’t accept Collins and Kennedy, so acquiesced on that basis. But you’re right in that he should have been strong enough to say ‘You want me? Here are my terms.’

I just re-read Clive Woodward’s book ‘Winning’ and the chapter on him accepting the England rugby head coach job is very instructive on this point. If only Ronny had done the same he may have had a fighting chance. We’ll never know.

  28. Farewell Ronny, I believe you joined with the best intentions and looked to take the team forward, playing in a more modern footballing style. Closer to the Celtic-way that we have had for some years.

In my view the early signs I saw of Ronny’s’ teams were encouraging. We seemed to be playing with more purpose, but alas it didn’t last. Managers in Scotland quickly worked out how to play Celtic, you failed to adapt and the rest is history.

I think going for Ronny was a bold and ambitious move by the board and I hope we look to do the same again. I wouldn’t go back to Lenny. He decided he didn’t want to be at Celtic and he choose to leave. We should respect his wishes.

I have never rated Moyes as a top manager, his teams typically win less than half the games they play. His teams can beat the lesser clubs but typically fail when they meet better opposition.

Whoever Celtic bring in I hope the fans get behind the new manager and the team listen and respond.
