Ronny Delia Man City connection, where he could end up as coach

241

New manager of New York City, Ronny Delia, knows how to land a big job. He won a miracle Norwegian title with Stromsgodset and won two Scottish Premierships and a League Cup in his two years at Celtic. Since then, he has managed Valerenga, where he has not achieved anything notable.

He first came to Celtic’s attention as a potential assistant manager before being offered the top job. He delivered the obligatory titles at Celtic, and got unlucky in a few cup competitions, but conceding a late goal at home to Maribor, a debacle against Legia Warsaw before finally losing out to Malmo for a Champions League place cast a shadow over his time here.

There’s lots about the business model of the MLS I don’t get, but the move from having David Villa being managed by Patrick Vieira in 2018, to Ronny managing Gary Mackay-Steven in 2020 looks like a club beginning to live within its means.

New York are owned by City Football Group, the parent company of Manchester City, who Ronny knew prior to his appointment at Celtic.

Ronny is a clever man, he will be a better manager now than he was when he arrived in Glasgow in 2014. If he does well in New York, there’s a good chance he will end up somewhere in the Manchester City coaching setup.

Preston North End have today completed the permanent transfer of forward Scott Sinclair from Scottish Premiership side Celtic.

The 30-year-old attacker has agreed a two-and-a-half-year deal at Deepdale and will take the No.31 shirt.

  2. We play in a country where two clubs are responsible 80% of spectators and generated income.

We play against teams like Hamilton, Ross County, ICT, Livingston, St Mirren, Kilmarnock, Mothetwell, who regulary recruit players from English non-league & Irish Leagues.

One quarter of the playing surfaces in our top division are plastic.

We play each other four times in our top league, which must be demotivating.

TV income for the champions is less than £4m.

Taking all this into account, the fact that we get within ‘smelling’ distance of the European top table, is a miracle.

A miracle that we take for granted.

A miracle brought about by those who run the club in such an honest & professional manner, and a wonderful fan base at home, and all over the world.

Sometimes it’s good to stop and think.

“Preston North End have today completed the permanent transfer of forward Scott Sinclair from Scottish Premiership side Celtic.

The 30-year-old attacker has agreed a two-and-a-half-year deal at Deepdale and will take the No.31 shirt.

The Bath-born player was a previous EFL Championship player of the year and won the Scottish PFA player of the year in his first season at Celtic Park and has been a key figure in the treble- treble won by the Glasgow giant.

The former Chelsea and Manchester City man has scored 62 goals in 167 appearances for Neil Lennon’s side and also won promotion to the Premier League in England with Swansea City, via the Play-Offs, in 2011.

Speaking about his move to the Lilywhites, Scott said: “I am so delighted to get the deal done. I have been waiting to finally get down here to sign and I can’t wait to get started and to finally meet the lads.

“I spoke to the manager before I came and he spoke about training, about the tactics and I like where the club is heading – he persuaded me to come and I am so happy.

“I have had a fantastic three-and-half-years with Celtic, we did the treble-treble, I got the PFA player of the year, scored goals and was top goalscorer, but now it is a new chapter for me. I am coming here to improve and to help the team push for promotion.”

PNE manager Alex Neil was also very pleased to have concluded the deal, adding: “I am delighted [to sign Scott]. The season until this point has been good, in terms of getting us into that top six contention, but we have needed to strengthen and add a little bit of knowhow and experience in certain areas.

“Scott is someone we have been interested in, and we have coveted before, and now that we have got him across the line, I am hoping that he will add that bit of quality and experience that we need.”

This is exactly what I said

“Instead one result and one wretched performance have sown the seeds of doubt in the minds of many. Peter Lawwell’s name crops up continuously as the villain of the piece, with his past remuneration and his leadership of the club, seemingly to blame for everything. I am not going to attack, or, defend, his salary, that is a matter between him and the board. If they think he deserves what he is paid based on his contract, that’s fine by me. The chief executive runs the club from top to bottom on a basic salary of £1.7m. The payment of £3.55m in 18/19 includes deferred bonuses from previous years”.

I did not say that Peter Lawwell had been held responsible for the defeat at Celtic Park.

As you can see, I refer to the “seeds of doubt” sown by two performances had, as usual, brought out the PL detractors with their stories of his remuneration – mind you it does not take much for the PL bashing to start.

The point of the complete post was to highlight other areas of responsibility – e.g. management & players, for the good as well as the bad.

I have been critical of PL and the board for the lack of transparency in the Res12 situation and agree with Aulhheid’s most recent posts on here. I am also concerned by the board’s apparent reluctance to seriously engage with the SFA on this, and other matters.

I hope this clears things up for you. HH

Paul Larkin thought the FA Cup was lifeless? He couldn’t have been watching Liverpool – Everton or Arsenal – Leeds. Both games were riveting, and played at a far higher speed than we could cope with. To me, Arsenal, playing like that, are a good bet for the EL Final again.

Interestingly, Harvey Elliot, the 16 year old who played for Liverpool, was younger on his debut than the present age of the 15 year old Bruno Davidson we just signed. But does anyone here think he will be in the first team in 12 months? No, didn’t think so.

    Your post at 1:20pm

“As we approached the league game at Celtic Park on 29th, again just as in Ronny’s time, directors, managers and players are credited with our progress to date. I think it is safe to say that none of us were expecting what was served up to us on the pitch that day. It is not the defeat that is bugging us; it is the manner of the defeat. PL and the board are not culpable for that result – it was pure and simple a football division failure – it was down to management and players.”

    TBB & Auldheid

Interesting debate and great figures TBB. Aligns with the 2017, 2018 turnover figures vs 2019.

    Here’s my take…

Instead of reducing the risk to zero, there is another way.

    Get good.

From a purely business point of view the risk can be mitigated (rather than not taken – as it is now.)

One way is to store a whole load of money away in a Bank somewhere and use it if the football fails to deliver.

My preferred option is, getting the football to deliver.

To do that you’ve got to be good and excel at what you do, what is wrong with that approach. We expect it from our striker, we expect it from our GK, we expect it from our mid-field general, we expect it from our invisible wingers, we expect!!

After Rangers died, when I argued that we should be aiming to build a squad capable of UCL qualification, a teir 3 UCL team as I saw it, I was told it was too risky.

Now in dem days, it had never been easier to win the Scottish League, when the Champions route was introduced qualifying for the UCL got easier… we just had to get better, we got worse.

No fhellas, DD selected Brendan Rodgers as the manager and laid lie to the risk myth IMO.

We got good and excelled at what we do.

Our revenues went up to record levels, our STs and waiting list soared, the value of our squad rose to record levels we were winning the trebles we should have been winning the seasons before, when Rangers came “back” we were hunskelping.

Leave “risk” to the geeks… excel as a football club (not a spreadsheet) and Celtic have got it made.

The proof is in now there in the audited accounts and IMO is incontrovertible!!

Oh dear, a £5million 21 year old CF who plays in Poland

I just thought we might bring in some experienced CF and Central Mid with a bit of bite to enable us to push Cal Mac forward and use his vision, but alas we will wait and see.

    D. :)

  14. And another thing did I hear Lenny say yesterday we were looking to bring in a CF and a winger??

Ffs we just let a winger go. Wtf the last thing we need Lenny is a winger.

come on Lenny bhoy 2 maybe 3 players a CF, Centre Mid Wanyama maybe with bite to give us options and maybe a centre half Benkovitch maybe for cover and options, if we know these guys and know they can do it for us just go and feckin get them. Oh my days…

    D. :)

  15. The loss of CL money was caused by our inability to do things fast in recruitment

Of Course PL runs his eyes over every player that the football department want and slows the whole process down where it gets to the point where we are just not ready for the qualifiers

In any other business the CEO would walk , but not with Celtic

The financial gulf between ourselves and our CL rivals is huge Sometimes we have double the turnover of these other clubs

This has now manifested to the SPFL with the tribute club outspending us

    SIEMPRE CELTIC @15:35

Can’t take issue with what you say, except, there’s always an except, without it they’d be no discussion.

    You say:

“With this in mind its easy to see why the huns, whilst a threat this season, will not be a threat over the medium-long term”

If the Ibrox club win the title this season, it will be transformative for them. The phrase will be that “a sleeping giant has awoken”. They will be ‘top dog’ and certain things may happen.

The reputation as a loss-making entity will be quashed overnight. The future prospects will be ‘talked up’, with CL money front & centre of projections.

Those who have ‘pumped in’ c£50m, converted to equity over the last few years, have only two ways of getting it back – 1) drip-fed over a period of years, if the good times really are back. 2) Sell their shares, or, part of them to incoming investors. I think the latter is the most likely.

So we could be faced with a rejuvenated ‘Rangers’, taken over by investors with ‘deep pockets’.

There is definite talk and support for ‘cross-border leagues from both FIFA and UEFA – an example being a Benelux League featuring teams from Belgium & The Netherlands. In time some kind of proposal will reach Scotland, I don’t know what the set-up would be, but assume it will be a big step up on what we now have – we will leave the likes of Ross Co, ICT, Hamilton, Livingston….etc in the wake.

I’m sure that any offer would entail Celtic & ‘Rangers’ as a package.

This season is seminal for us and those down Ibrox way. ‘Rangers’ are all in this season – if they don’t win the title, they could implode, if they do win the title…..see above.

    =============

Well, needless to say, if there is a seismic change in circumstances and income then Rangers 2.0 will probably be ok, but until such time we can only work with the numbers in front of us.

Winning the league will only be transformative if they qualify for the CL, and as we know it is a perilous route. And even then it would only put a dent in the losses they’ve racked up over the last 3 years,

They will still be a loss making entity. They will still be paying the cost of Gerrard and his team when the time comes to replace them. The only difference will be they will be a loss making entity with a trophy to show for it. There was a club down Ibrox way that trod that path before…

Cross border leagues are very interesting but until such times as they are here it is not something anyone should be banking on. It could be 5/10/15+ years before anything like that is implemented.

So I’d stand by my view that Rangers 2.0, over the medium-long term, will pose us minimal threat.

CQN told us they’d pose no risk.

But they have put a good team together, so here we are.

But look at the numbers again. They can’t sustain it. Hence, medium-long term, I say minimal threat, not ‘no threat’.

There was always the chance they could put a challenge up to us ocassionally. A few things have aligned for them, couple of decent signings and the rest of the league becoming a bit weaker too has helped them.

But as I pointed out, when the time comes for them to rebuild(and that could be within 12-18 months) they will still be paying for the current regime.

    HH

  21. Chairbhoy

“No fhellas, DD selected Brendan Rodgers as the manager and laid lie to the risk myth IMO.

We got good and excelled at what we do.”

And yet, during that time we finished 4th in the 2016/17 CL Group, a marginal 3rd in the 2017/18 group with 3 hefty defeats in 6 matches, and a failure at 3rd qualifying round in 2018/19 CL campaign.

Yes, we twice achieved a post Xmas knock out at last 32 Europa Stage but compared with the period where you allege we were risk averse, we had not come close to achieving post-Xmas CHAMPIONS LEAGUE last 16 participation which we had managed on 3 previous occasions and even Ronny Deila managed this last 32 of the Europa in one of his seasons and , arguably came closer than Brendan did to getting us into the last 16.

So, the benefits of this increased spending, getting good, and being risk averse were that we won the same leagues we were winning before under the risk averse approach, but we won them by bigger margins and we did a bit of hunskelping as they were finding their feet as first timers in the Scottish Premiership.

And, on the downside, we slid further backwards in CL competitiveness but found our standard at Europa Level.

Hardly compelling evidence of getting gooder.

But one thing that’s been totally apparent under their new guise, and the post mortem of their predecessor, is that they don’t operate within conventional ‘rules n regs’.

  23. Siempre Celtic – interesting thoughts.

From a hypothetical perspective, if TRFC won the double this season (which is feasible) how do you think it would affect us? I get that it wouldn’t transform their finances but might it hole us below the water? Might we be dragged off our perch?

E.G 10-15,000 off our gates due to anger/disillusion, NL resigns due to backlash, top players sold, Brown retires to allow club to start afresh . . . Club in “crisis” despite never having been financially stronger. Summer of 2018 revisited but ramped up a few notches.

“What if” is only that, but that is what would be keeping me awake if I was deciding whether to get 2-3 quality signings in the door ASAP or engage in a willy waving contest with every club we negotiate with.

At this moment, Needs must. The board must deviate from the project player model and give NL the very best players we can to get us firmly back in control of our own destiny.

Of course that may be exactly what is happening behind closed doors and I can take my paranoid glasses off.

We can only speculate but, IMHO, we have reason to be nervous.

    The clock is ticking.

    =====

Thats the thing, they aren’t funding it on the basis of last years 2nd place, they are funding it by their own admission by going into debt.

King said that was necessary in the short term if they wanted to challenge but what about after that? Even they have to pay bills (no laughing) and they can’t continue indefinitely.

They may need to rebuild within 12-18 months and they may have to do so without the Gerrard factor/Liverpool link whilst still counting the cost of this team.

On the question of how much more would a league win offer them, unless they could negotiate 4 CL qualifying rounds the difference between coming 2nd in the SPFL and 1st is probably buttons.

    Is the answer A – 5 toes?

    Or B – 6 toes?

Why didn’t you just quit when you saw the question and walk away with £500,000? The self reproach is unbearable. The words you’re using to describe yourself cannot be repeated in impolite company let alone on live TV.

If you choose the correct answer, you win £1 Million. A million quid.

If you choose the wrong answer though…

    Do you lose a Million?

    Or do you win £64,000?

  30. Siempre – I hear you. I’d still like to see some sense of urgency and purpose emanating from our Club. A signal that they get it.

Great points and counter points – no name-calling, no bitterness. The type of interaction that makes this blog the envy of others.

I think we are all agreed on one thing anyway – there is a genuine challenge this season. The next five months will be different than any other period in the last 8/9 years. I believe we can win another treble…..but will we.HH

Exactly. They’d need to do so a couple of times AND qualify for the CL a couple of times to justify their current spending.

You wouldn’t bet on it, put it that way.
