Ronny introduces an edge on Celtic languid style

558

Ronny Deila introduced an interesting edge following yesterday’s preseason friendly against Rapid Vienna, saying his players’ “body language wasn’t good.  I can accept not playing well but the most important thing has to be the attitude and that was lacking”.

Noting a “lack of energy and that players “looked tired” is par for the course at this time of year but adding “we need to do something with their attitude” gives you an indication of what is expected of the players this season.

Celtic players have for a while now been criticised, fairly or otherwise, for languid body language.  Caught between Premiership games against teams they are vastly better than, and Champions League games they need to raise performances for, coaches would need to work hard to raise the heartbeat for domestic football.  I suspect its’ this Ronny was targeting, instead of a preseason warm-up.

Does anyone know how to stretch hamstrings prior to kicking the ball?  It’s incredible that professional footballers, and Celtic players in particular, are so commonly afflicted by this injury.  All it takes is one incomplete warm-up routine and a player is out of action for weeks.

Bids for the European Cup canvass, signed by Billy McNeill, close shortly after noon today.  Keep an eye on the action here.  You can buy a raffle ticket for the second canvass for as little as £1 here.

Funds are going towards the Cookie Jar Foundation and Glasgow the Caring City.  Many thanks for your fantastic help.

I think KevJ is angling for a job at the Daily Record, he has the envelope in his drawer with all the names of the people who colluded. Bored ? nah, just too much time on his hands….

Chris Spivey wrote an excellent piece about 18 months ago re. this, in which he says the cover-up of abuse goes all the way to the Royal Family, naming Lord Mountbatten in particular. Ted Heath also, but there’s no surprise there is there?

He does seem to be a bit of a mad conspiracy theorist, but I generally believe in the gist of that particular piece.

Yes, Tom, I believe he did. However, David Iyke has made quite a few allegations on a number of issues that have proved as inaccurate as the back page of the DR so nobody believed him.

The MP, Tom Watson, has picked up on this matter. He won’t be so easily dismissed. I imagine there will be a few high level folk not sleeping soundly just now.

Agreed. Do you notice that it’s not the original offence that causes the major scandal? It’s the cover up afterwards. The same pattern is seen with regards to Hillsborough, Lance Armstrong and, of course, Sevco. If the original offence had been admitted, a punishment could be handed down and we could all have moved on. The cover up involves so many people and that’s what proves that our institutions are corrupt.

Looking at the juxtaposition of the photographs on the Daily Mail website there seems to be more than a hint that Leon Brittan was involved.

    I doubt Heath was.

  7. Re languid style ….. Very often the team keep careful possession , allowing the SPL opposition time to tire themselves out and we run out comfortable winners. The players know that it is unlikely that Killie or St Mirren will actually win , especially at home. Sometimes we get caught out in cup ties, where our approach comes a cropper when the opposition put in a major shift and over run us in the midfield.

Neil and the mgt team did well in the league last season, as the forward formation was flexible which made us difficult to read …….. Up to a point.

The problem we have is that our league style does not readily translate to CL where we rely on super charged adrenalin and Lady Luck to get us through. Last year, I believe that Neil tried to push on in the CL and we got caught out badly , so the time is right for a change.

I suspect Ronnie wants us to press from the front and for the midfield to take fewer touches and pass and move , as opposed to pass and admire.

At CL level the weak links in the team are Anthony , with a lack of pace and inability to close down , Chas for umpteen touches on the ball ( the better teams leave him with the ball, so it appears he is having a good game , plenty of touches) , Adam cannot defend, prevent crosses.

I noticed a few posters noting Kayal is playing well, remember Massimo same syndrome at play here.

Hopefully, our senior pros recognise that they can learn new tricks but I would guess that it will take at least 18 months for the new style to be bedded in and for us to be more competitive at CL level.

If Leon Brittan was involved, why was he given the “dossier”?’

    ###

Because he was the Home Secretary, and therefore had ministerial responsibility for the issue, and because Geoffrey Dickens was never regarded as being the sharpest knife in the drawer.

  11. There was a document published way back that was alleged to be a visitors book for the guest house in London where child abuse was alleged to have taken place in the 1980s – it has never been established whether this is real or not, hence the liberal use of the word alleged!

Names on that list include (then MPs) Leon Brittan, Peter Bottomly and Ron Brown as well as several Tory back benchers and also a Sinn Fein official. There were senior figures from MI5 and the royal household as well as Sir Anthony Blunt and Cliff Richard.

There have been so many senior figures linked to abuse rings that cover up theories are bound to be rife.Whether that means they actually did cover abuse up or whether there is no evidence to cover up is still up for debate.

But I think a of of folk re going to be facing a lot of questions over the next few months.

  12. Jonny the Tim and ernie lynch

We can speculate all day long about who was involved, but that only deflects attention away from the real culprits. eg I always thought so and so looked dodgy. Not good enough, especially when the offences look to be so serious. The real scandal will be when, if, we find out who knew what and when.

IMO it reads as if someone is claiming that before Ronni came we were were giving less than 100%, but that it will now be sorted out. I personally reckon that Languidity was not a factor in our performances (before the new management team came) and I say that getting thru the season with only 1 league defeat is fairly strong evidence of that.

If Roni is successful in getting even more effort out of the same pool of players, then i suppose we should expect at least the same in terms of league points, and possibly even more.

However my main point is when did this languid behaviour start? I never noticed it last season and we won the league convincingly enough to suggest to me that a fair amount of effort went into it.

Maybe its like the old addage says, the more we practice the more languid we become.

Perhaps we just make it look easy?

  16. Tamrabam

I agree and no argument or discussion against your post, maybe he expects more and thinks there is more to come he seems very astute and talks a good game so I suppose only time will tell, or he may just be doing a bit of kite flying, saying “don’t even think about slacking off” you know there will be one or two at it, every team in every team sport has them.

  17. Tamrabam

Every great side that I have seen since the mid 1960s have beaten all comers so convincingly that it looked easy. Don’t be kidded though. They all worked their socks off. The Lions, Brazil in 1970, Ajax, through to Barcelona most recently all had an amazing work ethic.

I don’t think Ronny Deila is saying that the team were lazy; more that he wants a faster tempo from them. The squad seem to be enjoying the training and are working towards what the manager wants. I see us playing more forward passes and attempting to find a man on the burst to catch defenders square. I’m confident we’ll enjoy the next few years.

With regards to the paedophile cover up. Yesterday, did anyone see the interview with one of the victims filmed in 2012.

He was 12 years old at the time of these incidents and would be mini bussed in from North Wales and taken to properties in London where men would bid for these young lads.

I remember seeing the original interview at the time. Utterly disgusting stuff and I hope that everything comes out in the enquiry, however I won’t hold my breath.

  20. I think we can be fairly certain that languid in Ronnie’s language is not a comment on NFL’s team or style of play.

Some players (senior?) are not showing enough interest in playing the way he wants them to play.

  21. Tambrabam, I’m inclined to agree, different Managers bring different things to the table at different times. It annoys me that some on here and I include the great Paul in this, feel the need to have a wee snipe at MON, WGS & Lenny to big up Rony & his ideas. The early vibes from Rony are indeed very positive and I am beginning to have hope that we may be on the cusp of something special. However this is a results driven business and it will be results that will make or break Rony & his new revolution. By & large MON,WGS & Lenny did deliver results, OK there were disappointments there as well but by & large, their tenures heralded happy times for Celtic Supporters. If Rony can maintain that sequence playing a better more exciting brand of football so much the better but the important thing is maintaining & hopefully bettering the sequence.

  24. From Celtic fc site

although Pukki’s strike maintained Celtic’s unbeaten record under the Norwegian, following their 3-1 victory over FK Krasnodar on Thursday, the Hoops boss told Celtic TV that he would be demanding more energy and attacking menace from his charges going forward.

“There wasn’t enough energy in the game, and we didn’t create enough and didn’t have the ball enough, so there is a little bit of disappointment,” he said in an exclusive interview.

“But it’s very early and we need to train well and get in good shape so that was the positive – we had a good game, with a good crowd and it was good training for the Champions League.

“There was good energy late on. We had 15 minutes in the first half and 15-20 minutes in the second half which were ok, but we need longer periods with more energy and attitude.

“It was 30 degrees outside and it was very hot so I understand it. We will have another game on Tuesday, so there will be an opportunity for the players who didn’t play so much today to play in the game and it will be a good match for us.”

Captain Scott Brown was forced to leave the fray in the opening minutes on a stretcher but the severity of his injury had yet to be ascertained.

“He got an injury and we think it was his hamstring, but we don’t know yet how severe the injury is,” added the manager.

“Hopefully it’s not big and he will be back quickly. He will have a scan tomorrow and we will see what happens.”

My opinion is that Celtic players did not give 100% last season.

Earlier I cited the Aberdeen cup defeat as an example when we failed to rise to a challenge.

You’ll recall a week earlier that the Aberdeen support had abused our manager at Tynecastle. I’d imagined that our club would have reacted like a tiger having it’s tail grabbed by a monkey. How surprised I was, at the meek performance and support.

Bizarrely the sheep, had used the criticism to motivate their team.

The League cup defeat was another, although there were several changes and that result was more in the freakish category.

Our failure to overcome other teams in domestic cup games is something to ponder though. My opinion is we fail to match the enthusiasm of our opponents.

I’m not referring to just the players, our club and support are much the same.

rwe- another take on it could be ,players were coached in only how to play the one system ? And are struggling to take in coaching which is adaptable in-play,to play various formations. Look how well top teams adapt when down to 10 men,or are trying to see out a game. HH
