Ronny introduces an edge on Celtic languid style

558

Ronny Deila introduced an interesting edge following yesterday’s preseason friendly against Rapid Vienna, saying his players’ “body language wasn’t good.  I can accept not playing well but the most important thing has to be the attitude and that was lacking”.

Noting a “lack of energy and that players “looked tired” is par for the course at this time of year but adding “we need to do something with their attitude” gives you an indication of what is expected of the players this season.

Celtic players have for a while now been criticised, fairly or otherwise, for languid body language.  Caught between Premiership games against teams they are vastly better than, and Champions League games they need to raise performances for, coaches would need to work hard to raise the heartbeat for domestic football.  I suspect its’ this Ronny was targeting, instead of a preseason warm-up.

Does anyone know how to stretch hamstrings prior to kicking the ball?  It’s incredible that professional footballers, and Celtic players in particular, are so commonly afflicted by this injury.  All it takes is one incomplete warm-up routine and a player is out of action for weeks.

Bids for the European Cup canvass, signed by Billy McNeill, close shortly after noon today.  Keep an eye on the action here.  You can buy a raffle ticket for the second canvass for as little as £1 here.

Funds are going towards the Cookie Jar Foundation and Glasgow the Caring City.  Many thanks for your fantastic help.

Reading the oo nonsense and glad I’m away from it all I usually have my summer break around now so have not seen the cultural relations for years thankfully. Seems that our pre season has started well, I’ll be back for our first cl tie in auld reekie looking forward to it. Down to the south of the island next week for the rest of a so far very relaxing break. Cmon the hoops.

  7. Not warming up properly is not an accusation that can be levelled at Scott Brown. Every time I’ve watched he warms up with enthusiasm.

Sometimes a hammy goes early in the game and it’s easy to blame the warm up routine. But what about when it happens in the middle of the game? Or late in the game?

The hamstring is just a muscle. Albeit a very strong yet fragile one. The current think is that static stretching is a no-no. I’ve no idea whether this has had a beneficial or negative effect on that particular injury.

I think it’s just an occupational hazard. And it’s usually the faster players who are susceptible. It’s not the extension of the muscle that causes the injury, but the twang when it snaps back after being stretched, so I’m told.

My physio was absolutely scathing about warm-up routines especially those at amateur and Junior levels.

Said they were so outdated and wrong as to the methods it was scary. he couldnt believe that many many more players had not suffered pulls and strains if only due to the warm ups!

Showed me other methods to merely tense and then loosen the muscle slowly to help prior to exercise. Also agreed with the running warm-up.

Said the more and more modern methids were changing the thinking on this particular subject. I’ll be paying much closer attention to the Celtic players pre-match routine now.

    The new strips?

    Gggrrrrr.

The plaid one looks like the kind of tat they used to give away with 6 gallons of unleaded.

I’m sure the Club could run a competition asking local primary schools to design an ole new strip and it would produce better results than we’re seein’ this season.

Pulling any muscle is an occupational hazard for any professional athlete.

For it to happen so regularly at Celtic in one specific area is nothing short of negligence considering the amount we put into Sports Science and physical trainers.

Hamstrings are majority fast-twitching muscle fibres meaning there is no reason not to pack on the weights when trying to develop it other than fearing for reduced flexibilty, which is where our army of training personnel come in. And this does refer to all three hamstring muscles, they just need worked in different ways to prevent muscular imbalances.

On the subject of other athletes from other sports I personally think there is more work goes into constant Pre-Hab work than in football until you get to the highest echelons of the game.

I hope you took the time to read the link I posted above on the subject.

  16. CELTIC will tell Swansea City they are wasting their time in preparing a £6million bid for Virgil van Dijk.

The Welsh club are the latest to be linked with the in-demand Dutch central defender.

Southampton’s new boss Ronald Koeman has also been mentioned with the 22-year-old who joined the SPFL champions from Groningen for £2.6million last summer.

Both Manchester clubs, Arsenal and Sevilla have also been credited with an interest in the classy centre-back.

Swansea manager Gary Monk is poised to offload Spanish ace Chico Flores before the start of the season and has earmarked Van Dijk as the ideal replacement.

However, Celtic are keen to keep hold of the Holland Under-21 international who signed a four-year contract last June and have said that only a “crazy” offer will tempt them to sell.

He made 47 appearances in all competitions last season and scored five times to help the Hoops lift the title for the third successive year.

But Swansea will have to rethink their bid with the Glasgow giants not interested in parting with the player for £6million.

Celtic accepted an identical fee from the Premier League outfit for South Korean midfielder Ki Sung-Yueng in August 2012, but they rate Van Dijk more highly.

  26. The way that RD is commenting on ball retention being an issue sounds like he is not happy about the basic ball control skills of players which will be difficult to change now when they are adults
