Ronny, this is your starting point

1151

Ronny Deila seems to be more upset at the poor performance yesterday than I was. My expectation on hearing the team matched what we saw. We have taken big steps to turn things around in recent weeks but, Ronny, this is your starting point, and it’s not as high as you might have thought.

Hopefully we’ll be back to something more recognisable as a full squad on Wedenesday, including Wakasooooooo.

Blog on the go this week, email delays too.

  1. Winning Captains

Voted last night and it wouldn’t let me vote there now. Should I mention im from the North of Ireland. Don’t understand this single vote malarkey.

  2. Not the greatest performance yesterday. However I still enjoyed the sunshine and the GB.

I’m still hopeful Ronny will turn out to be our new Mourinho and not our new Mogga.

I still believe he needs time, an opinion not shared by many on here or that sit next me at CP.

Massive game against Jambos , who must now fancy their chances.

  3. Big Wavy

indeed give him time. (a month in the Bar L for starters!)

Its only fair that he gets judged on this success. if h gets any success he should be judged on that too. But for me there are too many who cheered him all the way here, when they didnt even know the first thing about him, then still refuse to concede that he has not made any progress. If anything we are team going backwards

If big Pete had deliberately tried to empty Celtic Park, he couldn’t have made a better appointment, and in my opinion if and when Ronny goes due to failure, then big Pete should follow him.

Remember that we should be consolidating our hold on scottish fitba, not hanging on by the seat of our pants.

Anyway as Ronny says after every Champions League game, ahm aff oot!

TWO Celtic Youth Academy teams have arrived safely in Qatar and are already beginning preparations for their respective Tri-Series tournaments.

The Under-16s and Under-18s arrived in the early hours of the morning, and after a day of rest and relaxation to recover from the long journey, the two squads will train at the Aspire Academy facilities this afternoon (3pm Celtic Park time).

This will allow the Bhoys to acclimatise to the heat, which will be around 40°C since the first fixture for both sides will be at the same time tomorrow (Tuesday) against Brazilian side, Corinthians.

Rangers: Laxey increases largest shareholder position

Finance company Laxey Partners has strengthened its position as the largest shareholder in Rangers International Football Club PLC (RIFC).

RIFC announced that, following this month’s open offer of shares in the company, the Isle of Man-based hedge fund now controls 16.3%.

Laxey bought slightly more than five million shares to give it a total of more than 13 million.

The share offer raised £3.13m in total, reaching the minimum required.

In a further announcement, RIFC confirmed that Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley did not take up his option of more shares.

The English sports goods billionaire’s holding has dropped from 4.56% to 3.68% as a result of the issue intended to provide short-term working capital and partly repay loans.

Rangers International Football Club had been hoping to raise £4m by making almost 20 million new shares available to existing shareholders at the end of August.

The 15,667,860 shares sold surpassed the minimum amount of sales required.

The RIFC board intends to seek permission from shareholders at this year’s annual meeting to allow it to raise further funds from a wider share issue.

  7. quickdraw – Referendum chat:

The referendum ended up with a traditional Scottish rammy in George Square.

Instead of having a vote, this is how the matter should have been decided all along.

I wouldn’t fancy being in the shoes of those Orange-utans if Wummin Fur Independence had showed up. (thumbsup)

  8. I think the hury is well and truly out on Rony. The team selection yesterday baffled me. I am also annoyed about the Griffiths situation. Our most potent goal threat and not in the squad. I do not like Griffiths as a person but he is one of our best players and should be playing. Tony Stokes completely at fault for the Mothers goal and he did not atone for it.

    Scunnered.

MARTIN BAIN last night made a surprise return to football as chief executive of Israeli champions Maccabi Tel Aviv.

The former Rangers CEO has been out of the game since May 2011 when he was ousted by Craig Whyte after attempting to block what quickly became a catastrophic takeover.

Bain’s relationship with former owner Sir David Murray broke down as the sale of the club to Whyte was pushed through and he felt so badly damaged he turned down a string of job offers from other clubs over the last three years.

But he has been persuaded to take on the role in the Middle East after being handpicked for the job by Maccabi’s wealthy Canadian owner Mitch Goldhar.

And after being presented to local media at a press conference yesterday Bain spoke exclusively to Record Sport to reveal why he has decided to step back into football’s firing line – and to angrily reject suggestions he helped bring the Ibrox club to its knees.

Bain, who has not spoken publicly since being sacked by Whyte, said: “I feel sufficient time has passed for me to now return to football and I’m delighted to take on this new challenge at Maccabi.

“The way things ended for me at Rangers was obviously a bruising experience and I needed to take a period of time out for the sake of my family and my personal freedom.

“I chose not to say anything about what went on at Ibrox after taking legal advice but, now that I am returning the game, I think it’s appropriate I point out a few facts.

“In the two years since the board restructure in August 2009 and prior to Craig Whyte forcing my removal from the club, turnover had increased, operating costs reduced net debt more than halved from £31.1million at June 30, 2009 to £14.1m at June 30, 2011.

“This debt reduction was beyond the targets set by the bank.

“During that time the club won three consecutive league titles in unique circumstances while also reaching a UEFA Cup Final.

“I needed time away form football after everything that went on towards the end of my time at Rangers.

“But Mitch Goldhar is a very ambitious and persuasive man. He has huge plans for this club and when he explained them to me I felt it was an offer I could not refuse.

“I believe I am the right fit for what he wants to do in terms of his vision to build a European Club model, training academy and investing in building the club under Jordi Cruyff, the club’s director of football and our coach Pako Aysteran and Jimmy Bell the kit man”

If we were only lookin’ at results at the start of their careers in the ole Cellick hotseat we might have sacked Wim Jansen, Billy Mcneill, Gordon Strachan and even Jock Stein [Falkirk 6 Celtic 2!], and offered John Barnes a 10 year contract.

  20. John Barnes’s Celtic team played Hearts on the Saturday, were 2 nil up at half time but lost 2 – 3. He followed that by playing Inverness Caley mid week in the Scottish Cup when no one had ever heard of Inverness Caley and we were promptly gubbed again. He followed that by being sacked. I sense a parallel and if we get gubbed by Hearts on Wednesday night Ronnie will lose the confidence of more that just me. Big, big game on Wed night, Diddy League Cup or not.

John Barnes had a brilliant start to his career- he won 11 out of 13, up until the Lyon game when Henke broke his leg.

  23. If we are going to criticize RD, then I think we have to criticize the players as well ….

The turgid sideways passing football (camp around the 18 yard line, with everyone standing still, until someone finally takes a half-assed shot) that has been seen this season, is exactly the same as we have seen the last few seasons. So, that tells me, RD isn’t the problem …. he may not be the solution, but he certainly isn’t the problem.

To change that Celtic is going to have to change the whole culture at the club ….. I was disappointed, but not surprised by NFL’s comments (‘if they want a cola, let them have a cola’) ….

We all recall some of the comments that were made by (I think it was Vialli) about the booze culture in the British game and how behind the continental systems it was …

the Italian teams learned 40 years ago that it isn’t just about the 90 minutes on the pitch …. what is equally important is what you eat and drink, and how you live the rest of the week … because that does impact on the 90 minutes.

It sounds like RD is perhaps ruffling a few feathers … much like PleG did at Sevco…. in that case ‘player power, (translation ‘old school booze, bets and chips’ were allowed to triumph over progressive thinking there … and look at how well that has served Sevco.

When you try make major instituional (or more so, attitudinal) changes, there will be growing pains, and you may have to take one step back to later take two steps forward…

RD may not be the guy to lead Celtic to victory in the CL…. but, if he is the guy that, this season, gets our players fitter, working harder and off the sodas, and learning the basics (how to play football at pace) … even if he isn’t here next season, but he lays the foundation for the next manager …. then I think his contribution to the continuing success at Celtic will be massive!

that isn’t to say that I understand or agree with all of his decsions…. effectively playing 2 mids, with two strikers and two wingers (which was basically Saturday’s formation) has been shown time and time again not to work (at least not with the players we have at the moment )… it calls out for 2 strong midfielders who can both tackle, see a pass, and control the game … and we are short of that at the moment …. but I think with a bit of time, a midfield of Brown (wide right – great heart and guts, but not the skill to be in the middle), Biton (I think there is a player there … but he needs a run of games), and maybe Henderson (if he continues to develop) with a forrest or wakaso type player) …

or even a 4-5-1 formation would be better …. part of the problem right now is, Commons is only only effective and consistent scorer … so it is hard to leave him out of the squad … but, he is limited … not sure he can step up to the CL level…. and his fitness is clearly not great…. as a result, even in the SPL, he doesn’t cover back, and leaves the midfield outnumbered too often …. and not sure how, or where he would fit in a 4-5-1 …

if RD can get the players to buy into his new regime (fitness, and, hence faster more mobile football) we are on to a winner ….

if he can only get them to buy into half of that (just the fitness), then the next guy’s job will be a hell of a lot easier …

and if he cant get pros to accept that they need to be fitter and faster, and to be able to make and take a pass while moving, then he does need to go … but so do the players…. as that simply isn’t acceptable in today’s game.

  24. Aw Naw

    Martin Ban rewriting history.

The debt in 2006 was £6m. It rocketed times 5 to the £31m Ban conveniently chooses as starting point because it went to acquiring players whose wages became totally dependent on winning three titles to get the CL money to reduce the debt.

This all while knowing they were under HMRC scrutiny for a potential £24m plus interest and penalties for the big tax case ebts and £2.8m plus penalties for the wee tax case.

So dependent were they on CL money to make their business model work the game was quite happy to help them out on the park in the form of honest mistakes and easy results.

So dependent in fact that we now have a pretty good idea of what went on in 2011 to try and stop administration and whilst it is taking time to confirm it, that narrative is a lot nearer the truth than the picture Bain painted.

The really worrying thing is the apparent complete and utter absence of morals and ethics from their side and yet Scottish football as an industry thinks it cannot do without them.
