Ronny’s luxury denied to his predecessors

521

I remember writing with anticipation 10 years ago as many of Martin O’Neill’s benchwarmers came to the end of their contracts.  Martin was not a squad rotator, so those not entrusted with his confidence found themselves on the bench or in the stand on match day, there was little scope to play your way back into the squad, and the wages spent unproductively inhibited our chances of bringing in fresh talent.

Ronny Deila spoke to the media on Friday about the same issue, moving on those who are already well out of the picture, as well as some who played their part last season but who are unlikely to see much in the way of game time in the season ahead.

There’s going to be a bit of churn in the squad, we’re still likely to add three or four players, but it’s been 20 years since a Celtic manager’s talked about creating space in the squad for youth players to fill.  This isn’t a criticism of the managers we’ve had since then, more a reflection of the pressure they worked under.

Tommy Burns had to drive us from mid-table mediocrity to genuine contenders.  Wim, Dr Jo and John Barnes weren’t here long enough to concern themselves about development, which Martin made it clear from day one that his interest extended only as far as the first team squad.

I doubt any Celtic manager worked under the intensity Gordon Strachan experienced during his four years.  Every point dropped delivered a greater trauma than at any time I can remember.  Neil Lennon managed through the transition, from competing head-to-head with three-in-a-row winners Rangers, to getting used to life as the last surviving superpower.

This is Ronny’s luxury.  It doesn’t matter if we win the league by a record tally, or match the defensive records created in each of the last two seasons.  Better to lose more games while giving a chance to young talent, than ask hoary pros to grind through the same gears one more time.

Great stuff, the wee Bhoy is inspirational, as you posted loads of positives for us Celtic fans these days, if Ronny can get us to the group stages the world is his oyster (whatever that saying means) I think Ronny Bhoy “gets” us

Cloghercelt, sounds like a terrific night.

Its very pleasing about Ronny’s willingness to speak to our support and is doing well in connecting the support to the players and management team.

Was thinking about the TV money situation.

When would be be free to ditch SKY/Collective SPFL bargaining, if possible?

If Celtic could exclude all coverage bar Celtic TV from domestic home games, would it be feasible to then ask the Celtic diaspora for a modest fee for exclusive home game rights? We could still choose the k.o. times to suit us, by and large.

    I was thinking that if we could get about £10 per month from fans, say a round figure of £100 per year (with a 2 months summertime discount), that would equate as follows;

50000 worldwide subscribers amounts to £5m per year

100000 amounts to £10m per year

250000 amounts to £25m per year

500000 amounts to £50m per year

Does anyone think such a scheme is viable and, if so, how many worldwide subscribers would pony up £10 per month to try to get the Hoops competitive with larger European teams?

The officer, ” Oh really…….. and Who’s giving that lecture at this time of night?”

I’m sure I remember Juventus looking at a similar scheme, they are apparently by far the most popular team in Italy, despite SOT musings ;o). They looked at having their own TV deal and selling TV season tickets.

Celtic have nothing to lose in ditching out current TV deal, go to a purely streaming/online service, every home game 3 oclock kick off.

Delaney’s at 20.29, I switched off Paul Weller’s latest CD after 5 tracks. Really hard to listen to. I’ll give it another try soon.

Apparently he wrote a song for Olly Murs’ last CD. Oh dear.

His last one, Sonik Kicks, was worse according to one of my pals. He threw the Sonik Kicks disc out of his car window, it was that bad.

The Boca 10 t shirts are great. A lovely birthday present to get.

I was gutted when Henrik left, a few of my mates used to wind me up because being a Celtic fan I was always of the opinion “why leave” but when you look back Henrik gave us 7 brilliant years (and won me a small fortune over those years) in the cold light of day he went on and won a premiership, la liga & CL medals, I think my most poignant memory of Henrik was Seville, he was as gutted as any of us, not even sure he kept his medal, he looked a broken man that night……..by the way even though he scored two great goals that night my man of the match was the wee guy wearing factor 50 in the middle of the park, Neil Lennon was immense in Seville

Clogher Celt, a woman I know’s partner, works at Celtic Park, he does the kit stuff for the youth and development teams. He told me a few months ago that Ronny was great with the players, the backroom staff and the club employees.

He heard one of Ronny’s talks to the youth team squad, and he was well impressed with Ronny’s knowledge of the players, what was expected of them to progress and said they will not be overlooked. The young players were well taken by Ronny’s speech.
