Rosenborg a shadow of former self

874

Congratulations to Celtic, who last night became the first Scottish team to win a European tie since, Celtic, last season. While I am sure we would all have preferred to face Dundalk in the next Champions League qualifying round, a trip to Norway to face Rosenborg will be welcome by the club.

Rosenborg are not the same force we faced 16 years ago, and even that team was a shadow of the team who tested Real Madrid a few seasons earlier. The Norwegians succumbed to the inevitable forces of economic plunder, as clubs from richer leagues picked off their talent at increasingly earlier ages.

We should have more than enough in the tank for this one.

I’m not sure the hun will like this.

    Neither will the Green Brigade.

They are trying to silence us…keep on shouting bhoys…

The stench of corruption in football is overwhelming…

  4. Brendan Rodgers is an absolute class act, i thank my lucky stars we have him as our Manager. Long may he reign. Last night, the Green Brigade held a banner of Brendan alongside a provo, a quite deliberate act. It was disgraceful and not befitting of our Manager. I struggle to see how anyone can defend it.

  5. Not nearly as worried about a tie against Rosenberg than I would normally be, we definitely should be able to beat them but need to be careful as always in Europe.

Reports of Emilio leaving for the Middle East. I really do hope we have someone lined up immediately at left back as we are now short – and who can really say that if a £15m offer comes in for Tierney he won’t be out the door before he blinks?

At centre back we are also short, Caulker hopefully will sign and will hopefully heal under Rodgers.

We are extremely short up front. It’s not good enough to have 2 strikers at a club like Celtic. I really hope we’re not back to the days of gambling on the teamsheet and waiting until CL is guaranteed before attempting to make signings, which often leaves us with no time to get things over the line.

I know the big clubs don’t do business until the last few days but we don’t shop at Harrods, and smaller clubs want time to replace the players that they’ve sold.

  6. Some in the Green Brigade ,think it’s a bit of banter, with there banners, they are young guys, just like a lot of us were at one time, tanked up , couldn’t care less,,I think they need to have there own steward’s, searching a few of for offensive banners, but that’s just my view,

Struggling to see the logic in this. What exactly would Celtic be appealing?

    **************

Any decision taken by the SPFL board not to review, as Celtic expects, the findings of the 2013 SPL commission which concluded that no sporting or competitive advantage had resulted from Rangers’ (1872-2012) use of EBTs.

  8. traditionalist88 on

Rosenborg not what they were but have the confidence that comes from being league leaders in their own country(Dundalk aren’t).

The 2nd leg is also away from home, which isn’t ideal, given our record.

But tactically and particularly technically we should have more than enough to see them off.

5 years since we last won away from home in Europe against full time opposition (helsingborgs and Helsinki in 2012).

That record means I don’t think rosenborg should be regarded as a gimme. We will need a comfortable first leg lead otherwise we will be walking a tightrope in Trondheim.

  11. I was there for Emilio’s winning debut at Murderwell, and knew that day we had a good ‘un. All the best to him.

Correct, and we had a 3 goal cushion against Beer Sheva last year and still walked a tightrope in the 2nd leg. Unbearable!

  13. Although we didn’t win, the away performances last season in Manchester and Mönchengladbach were cause for optimism for this qualifying campaign.

I agree we need a couple of bodies in before the end of the window. Caulker seems like a risk worth taking and a new striker is an absolute must.

That said, couldn’t Gamboa play at LB? Pretty sure he has played there already for us. With young Ralston looking the part I’m less worried about an Izzy replacement.

What about Aitchison, Miller and Mickey Johnson? They’ve all played well when given the chance.

Oh! You will find plenty in hear defending them trust me, and that is they’r right, but I’m not one of them, I’m already down from a couple of years ago in hear calling the LEADERS (not the kids they encourage to do they’r dirty work) of the Ultra GB, parasites, and a pimple on the .rse of CFC , I said it then and I stick by it, remember that’s The LEADERS so don’t give me the usual spin on it, and I’ll give them no more oxygen on the matter, and that’s to they’r face TGM, and my name is up there, your statement calling people cowards telling people to say it to they’r faces, that supposed to be like a Hunnish threat? Well I said it a couple of years ago, and Iv said it today, I’ll get no fine for this post, but part of my season ticket money will have to go towards one that these Ultras have done.

Every year we have the SMSM by the balls, and every thing is doing good, invincible, treble, no matter what, this does not suit the Ultra agenda, they crave for attention and unrest, supporters in fighting, the media all over us, and the buzz word….Shut up Grey Brigrade……typical, no respect, no manners, pompous arrogance is all you can expect from Ultra Leadership, #Parasites

  16. All the best to Izzy. A great Celt.

  17. Good luck to Emilio on his new adventure, make a right few quid wee man before you hang up your boots!

I guess my worry is that Tierney could end up going as well. I really hope not, to me he hasn’t more worth because he’s not a striker, but could become more of a world class left back than Dembele will be a world class striker.

Not convinced about Gamboa at right back, and Lustig isn’t getting any younger so I’d say getting the scouts working on a long term right back is a task as well.

  20. James Forrest number one apologist for the Ultras, predicable, that’s the Uni mob circling the wagons, as is his right, I won’t be opening your post today James, i’v been reading the same one for years from you every time these Ultras FU, your other stuff I like to read, hey if you didn’t have critics kinda like the Ultras, who would know who you are :)) no offence.

The ONLY overt nod to Ireland was the Easter Lily. the rest of it was quite clever!

If I saw a similar banner at Greyskull I would think : Typical Huns.

We should be above that . Time has moved on and frankly so should some of us. It’s a football ground for Gods sake ,where we welcome all .

If that banner makes any Celtic supporters uneasy or deters any families from supporting Celtic then it should be challenged.

So where is the panic that KT is leaving coming from?

He would need to be dragged kicking and screaming from Celtic Park after someone had taken his parents out of the picture. They would then need to forge his signature on the contract with the other club!

    All IMHO of course!

It has been challenged and no-one has been castigated fro doing so; equally, it can be defended if that is the opinion of any individual.

In my case, I don’t have any real issue with it.

The banners displayed by Sevco Huns over the past few seasons have, IMHO, been much worse and yet not a peep in the SMSM about them!

  25. Rodgers visited the Linfield dressing room after Wednesday’s game to speak to the visiting players.

“It’s never easy coming here, we’ve seen other teams suffer,” the Celtic manager said. “I’m very much Northern Irish and I always like to see my fellow guys do well.

  26. No panic, I just think he’s that good that top 4 clubs in the EPL will come sniffing. And when they come sniffing it comes with £10-20m fees and wages of £60k+ a week, playing in a better league and potentially a sniff at winning the CL. His pull to Celtic might be enough, for now, but will it always be? I hope so, but who knows… and who knows if he’d be pushed if an offer did come in.

    TTR- Credit where it’s due

Linfield manager David Healy says Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers shook hands with every Linfield player and member of staff in their dressing-room after Wednesday’s Champions League game.

“That means a lot to me and a lot to the staff and players that he took the time to do that,” said Healy, after Celtic’s 4-0 win on the night which completed a 6-0 aggregate success for the Glasgow club.

“Brendan is a class act on and off the field. He is a great ambassador for this great football club.”

  28. When it comes to key players like Kieran Tierney our ability to hold on to them is based off the length of contract.

VVD and Wanyama were sold after the club repeatedly attempted to renew their deals and were rebuffed. We sold them two years into a four year deal.

Kieran Tierney signed a new five year deal in June. He’s likely to remain at Celtic for at least the next three seasons. He’s probably the least likely to leave Celtic in the whole squad!
