Rosenborg a shadow of former self

874

Congratulations to Celtic, who last night became the first Scottish team to win a European tie since, Celtic, last season. While I am sure we would all have preferred to face Dundalk in the next Champions League qualifying round, a trip to Norway to face Rosenborg will be welcome by the club.

Rosenborg are not the same force we faced 16 years ago, and even that team was a shadow of the team who tested Real Madrid a few seasons earlier. The Norwegians succumbed to the inevitable forces of economic plunder, as clubs from richer leagues picked off their talent at increasingly earlier ages.

We should have more than enough in the tank for this one.

Timaloy- length of contract is nothing, Robertson to Liverpool £10m, KT is a better player. Are you saying if Man U offer£15-20mil, Celtic won’t sell?

Bada. The thing is,Robertson has already excelled in the EPL.For the really big clubs, they will not hand out vast sums for SPFL players, not for a log time.We have to remember,KT is still pretty inexperienced at the top level.

The time WILL come, but I dont think now.

On your wish for a striker.Just who,of the sort of calibre we need, will be prepared to come to us and be 3rd choice?.LG is not happy with being 2nd choice.

    £489 for a day trip -Wow .!!!

My 1972 trip cost zilch ( beyond the game ticket and beer / grub money ). I was a student in San Francisco .. I was registered with an agency which employed people to deliver important documents by hand . No wages , pathetic expenses but free flights. That one was San Francisco -Chicago -Oslo – and back -Hey Ho . . Did the same thing for the Atletico Madrid away game in 74.

In july in the best wee country in the world racism and sectarianism is tolerated in marches up and down Scotland.

But an interpretational banner causes hysteria by the holy wullies.

The Herald was the first stir up last night with their suggestion that we may be in trouble as songs and banners may have been sectarian .

May is the key word as i’m sure their lawyers advised.

It always saddens me a wee bit when a favourite leaves Celtic for pastures new. Izzy was one of my favourite players in his time in our hoops. Saw on Saturday that he was not at his best, but always gave 100%. Good luck to him. I will miss him.

I love the GB as well but at times they need to learn to box clever, maybe a couple of them don’t want to.

Bit of an overreaction though. Nothing wrong with most of the songs and the ‘Brendan at work’ banner, well if we’re getting done for that, there was an 80s pop band in Australia who should also be fined :)

    HH

    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

I don’t want to sound like a know it all, but if you live in the North of Ireland the BRENDAN AT WORK banner carries a very sinister meaning that is not lost on the Unionist / Loyalist population.

  17. Hopefully Magners will stump up to cover the fine, & as they’re at it throw in a bit extra to cover the other 2 charges as well.

  18. Again if Celtic were to defend the banner they would get off with it, it’s all about who’s interpretation it is.

    Appeasement doesn’t work.

A few good posts, Sandman in particular.

    It’s a banner FFS, it’s only words.

I have also noticed that some on here were never young, must be a bummer to have been born old, bitter and grey.

Excellent article James. Like I said earlier today, some may even call the banners witty!

The ONLY overt nod to Ireland was the Easter Lily. the rest of it was quite clever!

    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Would i be correct in saying that you are not from the North of Ireland – banners were witty? – sinister is the word I would use.

  20. Unsurprisingly we are on. A UEFA charge. If we get another fine. Who ultimately pays the fine.

One thing is for sure, it will not be the not so few on here who have publicly stated :- not one more penny into Celtic ” due to morals or something.

    HH.

  21. Scullybhoy you are probably referring to “Sniper at Work” but I’ve seen that type banner & signs at countless GAA games over the years with various players names used & no one batted an eyelid.

I think we overdo the analysis at times.

Would I have preferred if neither banner was displayed, yes I would am I going to go all worry & angst over it, No I’m not.

I am well aware of that.

But unless there is copyright on that owned by some republican splinter group or other its effectively a banner making a play on a road sign with an image of our manager.

The illicit banner referred to in the charge is not that one, despite the connotations it may have in a small part of Ireland.

I know what my money is on

  26. When uefa charge one of the big league teams for their many clear breaches i will give them credibility .

Barcelona fans have political banners at every game without a peep from uefa as do many other teams.

Only the little league teams ever face crowd disturbance and letting off flares charges.

A corrupt little organization whose demise can’t come quick enough.

As an aside do not see any sectarian singing charges against Celtic as the evening times and herald have been lobbying for.

On the banner in an ordinary court of law uefa would have been laughed at as the burden of proof lies with them.

Interpretation is everything.Would love to see them who or what determined it to be illicit?

  27. corkcelt on 20th July 2017 3:56 pm

It was the fact that the banner was deliberately used in the context of last night that saddens me.

    traditionalist88 on 20th July 2017 3:56 pm

I know it is the other banner that UEFA has picked up on, but do you think that BR will appreciate how he has been represented in all of this i.e. the other banner? Anyway, my last comment is that I know what I listened to this morning in the town I live in and it was once again along the lines of, how can you be associated with all that etc.

    CCB,

I’m sure you are fine and your daughters are taking wise precautionary action. Fair play to them:)

I was interested in the recent Ibrox furore over the ‘colour green’. The Six Counties Team ‘proudly’ play in green. A bit of a paradox.

Maybe I’ll ask the current Irish FA Chairman (also CEO of Ulster Bank (RBS owned) and ex pupil of Catholic Grammar School, Rathmore).

It’s no wonder they are ‘bitter’.

Would a ‘green’ Northern Ireland jersey be welcome at Ibrox?

It’s great to know that SPFL governance follows the Golf Club model. A much admired democratic system.

Maybe the ‘Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers’ (HCEG) decision to allow women to become members at Muirfield is a precedent? The loss of the right to host the British Open forced that change of heart (although women will have to join the end of the queue and wait over 2 years).

It’s all about money in the end. IMO.

But it take s time…The HCEG is said to be the oldest recorded golf club in the world. It set down the original rules of golf in 1744.

273 years for equality in that case!

I agree they need to box clever and at times they make daft errors of judgement. Re. the comment about how can you be associated with that, there was a crowd of nearly 61k there. In that size of crowd anywhere in the world there are going to be a few nutters.

Maybe not judge the entire Celtic support by a banner held by one guy.

Fess-Ernie- I was at a pre match UEFA Security meeting at CP, for the return game v Artmedia.Looking at how many away fans, segregation, evacuation procedure etc.A UEFA Delegate inspected both kits, and had a ruler to measure sponsors logos too.

  32. I was unaware of the banner displayed by the Green brigade last night. This morning I met a friend in Tesco who showed me a picture of it. This man followed Celtic all over the world all his life apart from the times he was a guest of the Queen with periods of internment and two sentences for active service against her forces. He assured me that many who were active in the Republican movement oppose these displays. He predicted that there would be action taken by UEFA.

When I came home I read some comments here and later read James Forrest. It’s something I rarely do nowadays as I’m not too enamoured by his views .One sentence caught my attention.

He wrote, ”Those of a more innocent vintage may not remember when there were road signs up all over the southern Six Counties with “Sniper at Work” on them, but they were quite similar to that which depicted Brendan last night.”

I’m long past the ”innocent vintage” and having lived my life in north east Ulster I have never heard of the “southern Six Counties.” I can also tell Gavin that for a number of years there was just one celebrated “Sniper at work” near Silverbridge in Co Armagh.

As for his views on last night’s banners I couldn’t disagree with him more.

  33. Another day when we are talking about sections of our support instead on a great professional job on the park.

Yes UEFA are tossers ( hopefully that is a permissible term ) and are themselves riddled with corruption, but the charge and inevitable fine was oh so predictable.

Didn’t need to be mystic meg to see this coming.

Anyway last word on this from me. At the end of the day we are all Celtic supporters on here and only want the best for our team. . I may disagree with certain opinions, but I will always respect the right to have differing views.
