Rosenborg or Valur, if Celtic progress in Champions League

231

If Celtic overcome Armenian champions Alashkert in the Champions League first qualifying round, they will face either Icelanders, Valur, or our old pals, Rosenborg, from Norway.  The Norwegians and Celtic will be overwhelming favourites to progress from the opening round.

Rosenborg gave Celtic a fright a year ago when they took a 0-0 draw from Celtic Park in the Champions League third qualification round.  A James Forrest goal settled the return in Celtic’s favour.

Rosenborg went on to eliminate Ajax from the Europa League, winning home and away, before finishing third in their Europa League group behind Zenit St Petersburg and Real Sociedad.  Norwegian teams play through the summer, so Rosenborg have played 27 games since their winter recess.  This will be a stiff test for Celtic, should the first round go to form.

  1. We knocked out Rosenborg last season without a recognized striker fit for either leg (Griffiths came on as sub in 2nd game). Hopefully with Moussa, Eddy and Griff fit it’ll be a lot easier this season.

  2. what a stupid tournament the champions league is now, they’ve got teams that won their league flying 6 hours to play each other in the middle of the summer and then one team thats halfway through the season playing another thats weeks away from starting theirs, in the first two qualifying rounds, 5 minutes after we’ve finished our season and while we still have important players at the world cup

After that who knows what for another two rounds.

I’m not sure they cold have devised a more stupid 4 round tournament to decide who plays in the groups

  3. we always pick up injuries early season, we never go into the first few games of a new season with everyone fit

i think we’ll really struggle against rosenborg

  4. !!Bada Bing!! on

Top Scots referee Bobby Madden is being to forced to sell off property in a bid to avoid bankruptcy.

Madden, 39, faces the threat of going bust if he fails to reach an agreement after being taken to court by the taxman over unpaid debts.

In England no referee is allowed to be in any debt, main reason is they could influence a game for financial gain.Bank accounts inspected regularly, Mark Clattenberg was suspended a few years ago in England, as a company he was involved in was in debt.Interesting after P67’s article on Madden a couple of months ago…..

  5. Big Georges Fan Club - Hail, Hail, Wee Oscar on

Vibe from Celtic seems to be that the management and players intend coming back sharp, fit and determined for the start of the new season.

Only words, I know, but that’s all we have to go on at present.

As pointed out, having at least one of Eddie or Moussa fit will be a great bonus over our previous line up against (probably) Rosenburg if we make it past round one.

Our opponents will be as nervous at getting us in the draw as we will at getting anyone else.

  6. Always a big ask playing a team halfway through their season, match sharpness is match sharpness and Rosenborg are no mugs.

CL lottery again and again, we’ll have to be approaching our best!

The away game was one of our easiest.Difficult, but we have better players.By the time this tie comes around,we should be up to match speed. It definitely does not get easier, this round last year,we had Linfield.

  8. Well, we know what we’re up against…

Think it’s a case of be careful what you wish for!

After the first round draw we were moaning about the distance we need to travel…

For me, travelling obviously excepted, it’s a good draw. We should get a result in Armenia, if things do go wrong, we face a team that have travelled 2500 miles at Celtic Park for the decider.

Now if things go to plan, the local derby will be tricky… we need to be at pre-season peak for that one I’d suspect.

    Hail Hail

It was, but it doesn’t take away that in Glasgow we were blessed, they missed a fair few chances, we turned up in Norway, they didn’t, what will be will be, I would have thought that we would have strengthened for this year esp as the enormity of the cash on offer, maybes the balance sheet is a better defender than a striker :-)

  10. Last season we played them without Moussa,Griff,Oddsonne,Ntcham,Boyatta,Ajer.

    Big change this time.

  11. YET

Early days yet in the transfer window, especially with the WC on.I don’t think that we will scrimp, not with the money on offer for getting there.

    Well,I would bloody hope not.

saw you looking for recommendations for Dubai hotels for a stopover….

Depends very much on the budget, but most hotels are a high standard. You should consider something at Dubai Marina ( a lovely walk and plenty restaurants, cafe’s and a ‘small’ mall. Very close to the Metro which will help travel to most major landmarks. Also consider a hotel at “the walk” which is a beachfront development 5 minutes walk from the marina, and minutes from the tram which will transport you round the top half of the marina, and linsk with the Metro.

The Walk has some very good eateries, and all the ‘western hotels’ will have bars and restaurants within them. You can eat food from pretty much anywhere in the world within a relatively short distance.

You could also consider some of the ‘aparthotels’ which usually include a small sitting room, and kitchen area, and can be very good value for money, depending on when you book.

If you have any questions, just ask.

  14. TET, after reading your other post I fixed this one for you:

She makes me smile all day long! Not a bad song on any of the 4 albums!

Like Celtic you’ve gotta make your own music!

Coisty does what he does, says what he says, coz he knows that the West ae Scoatlind civil unrest factor will be his protection. Ever since, Coisty, Durranty and “Kevin” McMinn, gave a Celtic supporter the kicking of his life, outside the Salmon Leap pub in East Kilbride, back in the day, and left the Celtic supporter for dead, and they got away wi it, Coisty has been untouchable. Ah jist wish he’d have played aginst big Bobo, when Cellic wiz Cellic.
