I know we need to tone down the rhetoric & chest puffing but I haven’t felt as good about a Celtic team since Martin O’Neill & Seville.
However we are about to go into a different sphere of Football starting with the European Champions Real Madrid. It doesn’t get any bigger then that,
We need to go forward both with hope and realism. I can say right now, I will be happy with good performances and a 3rd place finish leading to a wee run in the Europa ,
First of all we have the Glasgow Derby to negotiate, we should win it and I expect us to win it but they have form in upsetting & mugging better teams so no complacency from this Tim,
With regards my number one target for the Season, winning the League, I remain supremely confident,
That SHOULD read…SEAD is only 2/1 to score against the Huns at ANYTIME during the game.
Thats VERY short Odds, for a Player who the Bookies KNOW will only be on the Subs Bench in all probability ?

2 weeks from now we will just be back from Poland. We will have an away game with St Mirren between us and the first ‘break’ of the season.
We know then how real our domestic challenge will be this season as our nearest rivals Hearts and Rangers will have met and we will have hosted Rangers and Livingston. We could realistically be a point behind Rangers or possibly 8 ahead ( they play Ajax and Napoli in CL in this time ).
In the CL we could be humiliated against a strong high press and struggling to plot a way to Europa post Xmas or realistic contenders for last 16.
Critical next 4 games for us. Season defining potentially.

Good to see Abildgaard being brought in but I can’t see him being anything than making a very occasional appearance
He’s not a top drawer talent and is unlikely to develope into one- at 26 he’s made one substitute appearance for Denmark in a friendly and he’s come from a team who got relegated from the Russian premier league with comfortably the second worse defensive record. Impossible to say for sure but it looks like rather than being extensively scouted for a role that Ange thinks is necessary it was a touch of opportunism that brings him to Celtic. Ange always talks about players who can play in a variety of positions and at 6′ 4″ and left-footed he might be seen as a Centre Back as well as a DM – he has played there for Rubin. It’s becoming clearer that opposition teams will let our centre halfs have the ball and carry it deep into their half, it makes footballing centre halves more important than defensive-minded ones.
Last night showed us something – an away cup tie against a very physical Ross County and we didn’t once look like we needed a traditional DM. The goal we conceded was caused by the centre halves being outmuscled and falling asleep, but we weren’t under the usual barrage of free kicks, corners and throw ins that we usually face at Dingwall. Play the game in their half and they don’t get near enough to our goal often enough to pose the sort of threat that used to be a problem. They had two shots on goal in a home cup tie – Ange’s pattern of play sorts out the need for a destroyer.
You could argue that we need someone to break up play against CL teams, I dont think Abildgaard’s profile suggests he’s good enough to do it against the best European teams.
Happy to be proved wrong as the adage goes

On the defence. One thing I’ve noticed about Welsh, Jenz and Starfelt which was reinforced last night, they all look a lot better when playing alongside CCV.
CCV seems to bring calm and fluid understanding to the defence, last night it was a little ragged and the play of the ball across the back and to the midfield wasn’t quite as controlled.
CCV also handles high balls with an ease that I don’t see in any of our other defenders, though Welsh has definite potential in this area. CCV’s bulk and strength allows him to easily hold his ground or ease an opponent out of theirs without getting into an all arms and legs tussle. Starfelt simply doesn’t (and never could) have that same physique, as was demonstrated by the high balls played to Fletcher at the weekend when an awkward opponent moves into his space it quickly becomes a physical tussle, with the ref provided an easy opportunity to award an opposition freekick.
I still rate Starfelt as the preferred partner to CCV, given his experience and ability to carry the ball. Though Welsh’s development is very encouraging, and I suspect in time he’ll be a strong challenger.
DeniaBhoy on
Big Wavy – I think so too, only downside is it switches Jota to the right where he does not seem so effective.

What was very important from last night was how good we looked with a team with lots of changes
Play with the sort of intensity we aim for for 90 minutes for the number of games we will need to play makes a drop off inevitable at some point in the season. We saw last season the number of hamstring injuries we picked up with a small squad, fatigue will play its part over a long campaign, intensity is such a key part to Ange’s Celtic we need to be able to swap players in and out without it affecting our play too much.
Starting 11s and subs are key for big games but other than Europe and the four derbies we’ll need to get used to seeing frequent changes and the possibility that we dont hump teams we normally would. But on last nights evidence our squad is now so strong we could field two teams capable of winning every game outwith the derbies comfortably.
big wavy on
SonsofErin,
We must be the only country still in the world that ranks CHs by the ‘high ball’, the last bastion of diddy team tactics in Bonny Scotland. There is so much more to the way we play and the CHs we have than the lump up to the big dirty CF for a flick on.
FWIW I think Jenz is a class act and will partner CCV in good time. We have 4 good uns in those positions all the same.
Deniabhoy,
There will be switching between wings to keep them on their toes and offer something different. And I want the look on Barisic’s face shown on the big screen when wee Liel is coming on.
