Why are Aston Villa wearing all-black shirts?
Aston Villa are paying homage to their first kit colourway on their milestone 150th anniversary.
To mark the occasion – almost to the day as the club’s first-ever recorded fixture – Villa are wearing a one-off all-black strip against West Ham in the FA Cup tonight.
Black is the colour Villa wore first before transitioning into the famous claret and blue.
Villa were the first team in the UK to put a crest on their shirts in 1878, and the badge on the anniversary shirt is in tribute to the original Scottish lion which has been redrawn from one of the earliest sources seen.
Branding will be on the back of the shirt, with Villa saying: “Principal partners Betano and Trade Nation have both kindly donated their branding space back to the club for the fixture, allowing us to create this historic look.”
The commemorative strip also has an additional symbol on the front of the shirt inspired by Villa Park’s stained glass windows.

Kyogo’s ‘goal drought’ dried up? with two fine strikes using the pace of whipped crosses to come off him and on target, twice. BR stretched his squad with spaces freeing up via injury and the exit door. Kenny and Cummings on the bench, as Rodgers remarkable Celtic consistency continues.
Slip sliding Hatate threatening in the first half was backed up by chance taking Cool Hand, delightfully beating Staggies shot stopper to the delight in the Celtic end. That pesky VAR has to benefit anybody, but occasionally Celtic, and James Brown supplied the feel good factor with his tackle which was a lot untidier, than Alistair Johnston’s.
Arne Engel’s pace proves his worth in the yardage he covers over 90 minutes, his presence a snip at today’s prices and the type of Celtic player that maintains the cavernous difference. Rivalry and competition is good, we only have complacency at the moment to keep us from everlasting, non generational dominance.

Watched the game in bar 67 Lanzarote. Similar pattern to a lot of our games. Started really well and should be 2-0 after 15 minutes. Idah and Kyogo missing good chances. We dropped the tempo for about 10 minutes and they miss a good chance with their first shot. We finished the half well and scored a lovely goal. Similar pattern in second half. We were never in danger but struggled to get the all important second goal and they get an undeserved equaliser from a penalty after we failed to clear our lines after a series of corners.
Why we do not have an out ball from opposition corners?
We step it up and come out deserved winners. Score line is a true reflection of the game although we left it late to get the goals.
Great to see Kyogo back to his best. Kenny missed an easy chance but like Kyogo in the first half the ball seemed to get stuck under his feet. I would like to see him get a run of games ahead of Idah who has been very average to say the least over the last 4-5 games.
League well over now.

As stated by others Aston Villa are commemorating their 150th anniversary and played in a strip based on their original colours before they adopted the classic claret & blue. The crest on the black top is also linked to those early days. William McGregor a Scot from Braco in Perthshire and an apprentice trained draper moved to Birmingham and kept his textiles business going down in Brum. Had a previous interest in football and got involved first as an administrator, then director and later President of AV. It was he that put the first ever crest on a football shirt, the lion rampant, procured from Scotland and seen on last night’s strip. Founder of the Football League, and crucial in getting them through their early troubles to become one of England’s greatest clubs. Celtic FC should produce some kind of pennant to present to Aston Villa when we play them at the end of this month as part of their commemoration.

Celtic survived a scare at Ross County by producing a late burst of goals to stretch their lead at the Scottish Premiership summit to 18 points.
Jordan White’s second-half penalty had brought the hosts level, but Kyogo Furuhashi added his second in the 81st minute before a retaken Arne Engels penalty in stoppage time and Luke McCowan strike added gloss to the scoreline.

A gloss on the scoreline?!!! Apparently Ross County’s 1 shot on target, the penalty, merited this ‘summation’ of the game.
