Rotation and development in January

122

Dundee United are the only Scottish side we have faced and not yet beaten this season.  When the teams met at Tannadice just over two weeks ago, Celtic dominated possession but were unable create a genuine chance until the final moments of the game.  The match was indicative of the malaise Celtic slipped into a month earlier, and sparked a short-lived belief (among some) that a title challenge was possible.

United have picked up nine points from the four games since then, beating St Johnstone, Aberdeen and Dundee, before losing to Hearts on Sunday.  They are now third in the table and look likely to pick up a European spot at the end of the season.

Breaking down packed defences is the task facing anyone who wants to become Scottish champions.  St Mirren ‘s block was very effective on Sunday.  They were breached only by two Celtic counter-attacks and at a corner kick.  Expect United manager Jim Goodwin to learn the lesson that visitors to Celtic Park should venture up-field less often.

Brendan Rodgers will surely rotate the squad again tonight.  We cannot expect any individual to be at their peak for all nine games in January.  This includes the un-drop-ables: Cameron Carter-Vickers and Callum McGregor.

Every decision we make for the next 14 days must be considered with an eye on Young Boys visit in the Champions League.  There are few enough benefits of being stuck in a poor league, player rotation and development are two of them.

  1. i hadnt noticed the daizen signal to the crowd after his brugge goal,

easy to say it is a reaction to the groans.

  2. If Brandon wants to leave celtic he, as has been proven before, will leave without worry. He does not need an excuse, I don’t think he is looking for one

  3. He will be here as long as he wishes and I expect it will me min 3 year contract he signed

  4. Part of the problem is that there has been a lot of hype over the 120 trophies thing. That was their language, proclaiming themselves the best in the world, we should never fall into that trap of believing we should be on high. Because now the expectations are such that the thought of not being one up at half time, moaning at a backward pass, causes indigestion. Entitlement going too far. As for the KT chants, well let the people sing but they should value Greg Taylor as well. He’s no Maldini or even Charlie Mulgrew but has been a credit to the team. He’s also Scottish and any scots kid who makes it into the side in this global age deserves our recognition.

The media were always going to go to town on Brendan’s post match comments.”

Indeed they were……and just as predictable was the response of so many here echoing the narrative of that media.

The manager must be very thin skinned if he’s unable to take criticism following the game last Thursday.

    It was embarrassing.

  7. I’m not easily embarrassed. We lost a game. That it was against them did not bother me so much as it has done before – and that pleases me.

  8. Is there any kind of rule on playing in freezing temperatures? If it is -7 degrees tonight, as forecasted, then they better not water the pitch beforehand :) Players will need ice picks to get up the park.

  9. we have undersoil heating, thats what it is there for.

what it will do though is start to rut the park, giving the percy throwers the opportunity to comment that the pitch is a disgrace.

  10. You have to wonder what’s to be gained by Celtic supporters bringing up a game we lost last week?

Good afternoon all from the Victoria Bar. I’m looking forward to the game tonight, another 3 points hopefully and make the hun even more ugly and stupid. If that’s possible.

Yes indeed!!! – Brendan set the agenda at the first presser and allowed it to almost exclusively dominate the second. No one can be in any doubt how strongly the manager felt – his demeanour was terse and sombre throughout.

If some of our number are looking for perfection they should first look at themselves – just a wee clue – it doesn’t exist. HH

  13. agree re time wasting, will Kevin Clancy enforce the goalkeeper 6 second rule or turn away and proceed to the halfway line as their keeper walks from one side his 6 yard box to the other or even not stop the play as the opposition players go down feigning injury when they themselves have committed the offence.

  14. Ange never hung around long enough to be ‘insulted, but no doubt it would have come eventually and from the usual suspects. I remember when Ange was asked about his relationship with top players at Celtic, he said in his own inimitable fashion – “well I don’t fall in love with them mate”. I think the same applies to fans🤪

Below from BBC Sport – change a few words and it could be us that are the subject – only difference is that we are being very successful in our sphere – Spurs aren’t HH

“Do people not like him [Ange Postecoglou] because he’s so straight and so blunt and he doesn’t really fluff anything with his words, he just tells you exactly how it is? Maybe he should get more credit.

I just think the frustration with the Spurs fans is they don’t change a thing and they do exactly what he says to the letter, with them playing out from the back with the high line. They just do it to the letter and there won’t be any in-game management from senior pros. I think they’d like to see more of that. The manager is backing the players, what can you do?”

  15. Most people on here [r

probably know this, but, when Greg Taylor started out at Kilmarnock he was a left sided midfield player, a very good one, unfortunately, it was Kris Boyd who made that compliment! :))) por cierto

  16. POR CIERTO – He was probably put to left back because he was better there than whoever was in situ and the rest, as they say, is history.

Bernabei is another who looks like he would have been useful on left side of midfield.

  17. Aff oot soon to Celtic Park, to support the team and the manager, to hopefully go 16 points clear…….which obviously isn’t good enough for some.

  18. I note that Arsenal started 18-years-old Myles Lewis-Skelly at left back last night. Then subbed him on 78 minutes, bringing on Zinchenko while leaving KT on the bench. Is he currently third choice LB or even 4th as they also have Calafiori who is an Italian international.

They have plenty of cover, let’s just say that.

  19. Saint Stivs – would be nice to see if we are a couple of goals to the good and the pressure is off. He deserves a chance and our two forwards aren’t exactly on fire this season.

  20. Are there any Sing tims on Cqn? I’m going to be there on Feb 2nd and was planning to catch the mwell game. Celtic bars shows a place on orchard Rd but làst updates were back over a year ago.

I’ve not been for a very long time and watched a game on Clarke Quay so if anyone can point me in the right direction I’d appreciate it.

    Ta.

Ross McCausland has film star looks.

Sadly for him, the film star is Lon Chaney Junior in full costume.

“.. to hopefully go 16 points clear…….which obviously isn’t good enough for some.”

    So true.

  23. Whilst I am on. I like Greg Taylor and I’d like him to stay, it will be difficult to replace him.

However if the rumours of wage demands are correct, then in true cqn fashion I’ll drive him to the airport myself.

  24. The only measure of any difference required from the football department is a demonstration of a decent level of humility from Rodgers about the arse he is making of himself by lording it over the fans like the spoiled child that he is.

Tiny Tim – Excellent post, refreshing honesty, none of the pretentious, pampered pooch pish.

If Rodgers wants to leave the One horse league and go to England and get some other poor team relegated – let him go.

Neil Lennon will demonstrate the much needed ‘street wisdom’ to progress Celtic in Europe and bury the Huns again.

    lol
