Rotation and development in January

122

Dundee United are the only Scottish side we have faced and not yet beaten this season.  When the teams met at Tannadice just over two weeks ago, Celtic dominated possession but were unable create a genuine chance until the final moments of the game.  The match was indicative of the malaise Celtic slipped into a month earlier, and sparked a short-lived belief (among some) that a title challenge was possible.

United have picked up nine points from the four games since then, beating St Johnstone, Aberdeen and Dundee, before losing to Hearts on Sunday.  They are now third in the table and look likely to pick up a European spot at the end of the season.

Breaking down packed defences is the task facing anyone who wants to become Scottish champions.  St Mirren ‘s block was very effective on Sunday.  They were breached only by two Celtic counter-attacks and at a corner kick.  Expect United manager Jim Goodwin to learn the lesson that visitors to Celtic Park should venture up-field less often.

Brendan Rodgers will surely rotate the squad again tonight.  We cannot expect any individual to be at their peak for all nine games in January.  This includes the un-drop-ables: Cameron Carter-Vickers and Callum McGregor.

Every decision we make for the next 14 days must be considered with an eye on Young Boys visit in the Champions League.  There are few enough benefits of being stuck in a poor league, player rotation and development are two of them.

  1. Good post from Jobo Baldie who used to be a fixture on here but now posts elsewhere.

“Nothing from the last few days affects my own support tonight. Whilst the game is in progress its 100% encouragement to all of our players. As for the GB they remain 300 supporters in a crowd of 50,000. They can bring a special vibrancy to our ground but they rarely ‘speak on behalf of the majority’. And which of their regular songs are actually in support of the team?”

    Well said! HH

Rather cruel to Lon Chaney Junior. He’ll be fooking birling in his his Wolfie Onesie. 😂

  3. setting my expectations for tonight i was looking at our seasons results so far, and trying to recall our levels of performance.

in my bhyhood at end of season the View would have a collection of top 10 games. and i was thinking along those lines, and at celtic park so far there was only one game, aberdeen 2-2 i came away thinking a bit of “just what exactly happened there”.

and conversely, the two wins and a draw in europe, brining much joy to me, as i was sick of watching the same euro-trash movies.

that then had me thinking if aberdeen at hampden and bratilava and leipzig were, for me 9/10

even the most recent games, scoring for fun still get to 7 and 8 from 10.

i find it hard to think of what is so bad/

Unfortunately, your first clause applies to too many in our support :-)))

  5. TINYTIM @ 12:23 PM,

    Thanks for coming back…

Well we’ve all been over exuberant bhoys, do we need our knuckles wrapped?

Well that is what it it is…

Brendan always gets tetchy around recruitment time, it must be a mare for managers

For me the hooliganism and cheating at Ibrox was ridiculous- many of us see that as par for the course

A lot of players, maybe Kuhn and Engels that come from more civilised, but not less passionate countries are thinking WTF

Always good to hear your views big mhan…

POV: We need to pull together, I hear what you say – but for me, there is a divide and rule thing at Parkhead – this schism is toxic

    Hail Hail

  6. CLUNKS @ 5:32 PM,

    God Bless them

  7. A leaked ‘story’ from a pet poodle, nobody buying that nonsense, it’s the sources that need looked at

  8. lets all do the huddle on

theres currently only 1 solitary mini bus in the emirates car park.

usually there are a number of irish buses in there.

one trip too many for many of them i reckon because of the number of recent home games.

could be a very sparse crowd.

its only -2 degrees at the moment, when is it meant to get cold 😁

  9. Bada

    What was the leaked story?

    LADTH

I have to say it s not a night I am wishing I was there !

I would imagine that not many who have to travel a fair distance will be there tonight. Also, supporters getting on a bit might not fancy sitting for a couple of hours in freezing cold.

So, likely to be a relatively sparse crowd but a supportive one.

  10. Let’s All- all these games crammed into December and January is total nonsense, terrible weather, Christmas, those in charge of our game don’t care for the paying supporters

  11. !!BADA BING!! @ 5:47 PM,

We need to get these mo~fos out of our Club

    These guys are toxic…

    Hail Hail

  12. HS- McGowan says Taylor wants 25k a week, I seriously doubt that, but it’s the timing from Lawwells pet poodle, that needs looked at,Taylor’s offer has been on the table for at least 6 months, why not tell us in November about this 25k a week fable?

  13. bigrailroadblues on

Good evening all from the Prince Charlie. The environs of the Holy Ground are looking particularly Siberian. 🥶. Thrash this mob, the Celtic!!!!

  14. Grandson away to catch supporters bus, when I asked him if he was going to the game tonight.

He looked at me as though I had horns,” course I am papa”.

The baton has truly been passed on

    BRRB @5.05

    😂

Don’t imagine we’ll see him walking with the queen.

  16. Just waiting for tonight’s designated driver – glad it’s not me as I’m having a few tinctures before I go.

Greg is worth £20k/week – £1m/year in my book – probably barely on half at the moment – he’ll see others coming in on higher as our wage structure changes – I think he could get £20k in the Championship – no doubt there will be suitors. I want him to stay – he knows the format, is reliable, gives 100% every tie, pleases the manager, is popular in the changing-room and is seldom injured HH

  17. Think its time we put BRs comments to bed.Now history.Going back to his first time of leaving,is positively ridiculous. He is the best manager we could hope to get,so let’s now get on with it.

Any 11 Brendan picks tonight that plays well, will gub United.Just facts.Only have to watch their big striker,Dalby ,who is doing well.Personally I would play Idah tonight and Saturday.Give him the hour both games.A bit of decent game time instead of stop/start,is better.

    As long as we win.

  18. CELTIC: Schmeichel, Johnston, Carter-Vickers, Trusty, Taylor, McGregor, Engels, McCowan, Kuhn, Idah, Maeda.

Subs: Sinisalo, Scales, Palma, Kyogo, Valle, Yang, Bernardo, Hatate, Ralston

  19. GENE @ 6:39 PM,

    Good team…

Think we will be better than Tannadice

    Hail Hail

  20. Oh,I will still be shouting, not groaning ,at the Telly if there are 7 or 8 passes played in our own half tonight.Absolute nonsense.

    In their half,fill your boots.
