Rugby Park surfaces again

147

If you are feeling a bit anxious today but you’re not sure why, suppressed memories of Rugby Park could be filtering through your subconscious.  After 13 undefeated visits to Kilmarnock in the 8 years to 2018, Celtic have lost two of our three subsequent visits.  The only win came courtesy of a memorable last minute Scott Brown strike.

Much has changed in the 11 months since that win, including both team’s managers, but the plastic surface that Brendan Rodgers’ side found to challenging remains, a consideration for Neil Lennon tonight.

New Kilmarnock manager, Alex Dyer, watched his team beat Queens Park 6-0 in the Scottish Cup on Saturday, but his side’s league form is dreadful.  They played six league games in December without scoring a goal and earning only a single point.  If you thought Celtic needed the winter break, speak to a Kilmarnock fan.

Results, of course, do not tell the whole story.  Killie are not losing goals, in that December run only Livingston scored more than one against them.  At Ibrox, they held on until late in the game and gave the home team a fright.  They have kept 10 clean sheets in 13 home games since losing to Newco on the opening day of the season.  Tonight will be a real challenge.

But we don`t follow the Rangers agenda or take our cue from the hun .

    No sirree.

  2. Macjay. I disagree. We are not a business. We are a football club. Do you consider yourself a customer or a supporter?

We should not be in the business of earning profits and stashing cash in the bank. Every spare penny we have should be spent on the team. £40m in the bank! Keeping it for a rainy day? Well, it is now pouring down.

An accountant should not be running our club. They are conservative by training. It is about profits and bank balances, dividends and bonuses when it should be about the team the team on the park.

“The is no point having interest in the bank and no interest on the terracings”. Davie Hay said that 35 years ago. Just before he was fired.

If we don’t win the league Neil will pay the price for the board’s incompetence.

  3. Garngad to Croy on

I feel more nervous about tonight’s game than I did about the Huns game. It could shape the remainder of the season. Come On You Bhoys In Green !

  4. Westcraigs,

Utter nonsense. So whatever we have in the bank,we should spend.?How has that formula worked out for many teams.Rodgers was given 30 million over two seasons,Lenny on course for same, this Summer. We can spend this kind of money because of our finances.Buying and selling is the only way forward in the financial climate in the SPFL.If you know a better one,let us all know.

  5. Westcraigs,

“Its pouring down”FFS,how long you been supporting CELTIC?Since 29th December?Nonsensical post.

Got to laugh at the usual useful idiots supporting corruption and try to convince us it’s ok because the business is doing no bad.

  7. We have by far,the best squad in Scotland. We have 9 days to try and get more players in.I have not seen a massive rush to buy from EPL clubs, even those in relegation danger.January,is not a great month,as this would suggest.Going by our present squad,no reason we should not win this league.

Apologies, those numbers were wrong. Corrected:

    2016-2017 – W9

    2017-2018 – W5 D3 L1

    2018-2019 – W6 D1 L2

We dropped points in 4 and then 3 games in the 9 games before the winter break and went on to win the next 9

If we win the next 9 games without scoring more than 2 goals I’d be very happy.

  9. Canamalar,

Who is supporting corruption.?In what form.Name names.I don’t see or read anyone on here supporting “Corruption”.I am sure you,in your usual wisdom does, but that’s an entirely different thing.

“Where you and I differ – I assume they will get 100 points”

Assume and you make an ass out of u and me.

The Huns have done well in their first 19 games of the year. That’s not a guarantee they will do the exact same in the second half of the season. History is littered with teams that have collapsed.

They have had a better start than they could possibly hope for and they still aren’t free of us. That should be the lesson.

At their very best we still are keeping the pace.

“For all the players you mentioned that were projects but came good how many did not

I could make a bigger list”

You could do the usual and list every signing that didn’t work. Which is the same for every club everywhere.

Do you know what’s underrated? Serial winners.

Nobody in that Ibrox dressing room (save Davis & McGregor) has won the league. Even their coach slipped when he had the chance.

Our dressing room is full of serial winners. Scott Brown, Tom Rogic, Kris Ajer, James Forrest etc. These are the guys who will propel Celtic to a league title. I was saying the very same thing as last season.

If Klimala can add to the squad in the same way as Timo Weah did last season then I’ll be happy. I don’t expect him to be Moussa Dembele right away.

  12. Supporting corruption? Not trying to get Campbell Ogilvie out. Who came up with EBTs. Not tryin g to get justice and titles. Deliberately not appealing LNS. Going along with same club myth. Allowing the referee fiasco to continue. Not saying a word about a million decisions. Even when bang to rights withRESq12 they tried their best to kick it into long grass and ignore it.

Sevco sites hate Lawwell as they partially blame him for the new club starting in the 4th tier.

Some mentalist posters even blamed him for the death of their old club.

The truth of the matter gradually leaking out, especially with him pushing for the old club and Celtic to get a move to England, portrays Lawwell almost as the guy who tried to save them.

    ===========================

That is the narrative I would take and in doing so explain why it was necessary in the long term interests of Scottish football to do so, but admit too much of the integrity of the game has been sacrificed by the 5 Way Agreement and LNS sham and work in conjunction with the support is necessary to restore it.

    Auldheid

Are you taking the long term narrative that Celtic and ‘rangers’ are to seek entry into the epl?

The interview with Gerard a few weeks ago I thought was interesting as he commented that they could do well in England,I didn’t follow where or how the narrative arose?

It was as tho Gerard breathed life into it,saying we are back and can comment as a club(Albeit a 7 y.o one)

DD would sell his mammy to get in there.but there is coming up for 2 divisions of debt ridden club’s (After trying for the dream of epl glory) opposing them. They will also be backed by their own FA. The only way I see merger come about is thro UEFA and their(fixed) tournament schedule(exclude all countries with no big telly population).and there will be no integrity in that.

Interesting times ahead for us all, personally I think UEFA took the shilling when they stopped promoting football as a sport played by the widest scan of the population possible and are now only interested in the widest/biggest viewing figures, hence their CL tourney has 16 teams from the 5 biggest telly audiences.

    Remember the old MTV advert

If your not part of the solution your part of the problem (probably stolen shamelessly from some erstwhile sage or novel).

For the avoidance of doubt, PL runs Celtic the way DD wants him to, he serves his interests and his interests only, so whatever “Business” model we purport to run comes straight from DD. We are not run as a football club as football is secondary to the model.

Personally i feel that PL causes more division amongst the support than is necessary and to date has done nothing to convince me and plenty of other supporters that he has our interests at heart.

  18. The Battered Bunnet on

The biggest issue with 3/4G pitches is that the speed of the ball and the spin it takes from the surface is largely dependent upon how wet the pitch is.

If you want to play a fast, high tempo match then water the bejaisus out of it before the match and again at half time.

Alternatively, if you want a slow tempo with an aspect of lottery on the bounce of the ball, keep it dry. The drier the surface (and the crumb rubber) then the more friction between ball and surface, the slower the ball moves and the more irregular the bounce.

A bone dry pitch will accentuate the spin on the ball, causing for example a ball with back spin to bounce backwards.

The unfortunate news from the boul Judith is that there will be no rain tonight in Kilmarnock, and there hasn’t been any for at least 2 days. If Killie want a bone dry pitch, they’ve got one.

    _______________________________________________________________________________________

I think you raise a really interesting point here.

On the 24th July 2012 we played Norwich at home in a friendly and on the 28th another friendly at home to Inter Milan. Therefore it’s reasonable to assume that all parties were in Scotland. That said, regardless of where they were located most executives then and nowadays have some for of mobile device that allows for access to emails when on the move.

While I’m in no way challenging the veracity of those who are closer to this than me. An instruction to the effect of, if you do not reply next day agreement will be assumed, is a preposterous position to take on such complex legal matters.

So let me offer an alternative hypothesis. Let’s assume ND did indeed attach such a stipulation. Let’s also assume that PL, being the smart man we all know him to be knows that trickery is afoot (polite copyright The Gentlemen) and chooses therefore not to accept the premise of the email and refers the matter unread to the Legal department.

That could, although it is a stretch, allow for a scenario where it is correct to say the email and attachment were sent, but also that PL has not seen nor read the proposed 5 way agreement.

Now let me be clear, I only offer this as a possible scenario. I have no insight into the inner workings and decision making at Celtic, and I also accept that others who post here have much more awareness of facts and events than I have. However it’s that acceptance of my own lack of insight, that allows me to take PL at his word rather than condemn the man out of hand. There’s more to all of this than most of us on here will ever know.

In any case, more than anything just now, Come on the Celts tonight and let’s get on a winning run to claim 9 in a row……

  25. I believe there were a number of Drafts of the 5 way agreement circulated. A version involved several titles and cup stripping was doing the rounds. Was the version sent to PL and ER not a DRAFT. That is a travelling draft version of the agreement not the final agreement. So not having seen the Agreement in the Final form.

However, the most objectional part of this was that the 3 governing bodies were negotiating in secret with the 2 Rangers and no other clubs were party to this agreement. Regan, Doncaster and Ballantyne did not discuss this with member clubs but went ahead in secret without mandates to make the agreement.

Th. e officials went and acted like they were members of a secret society and made an agreement with the 2 Rangers avoiding any penalties and tried to force the Newco into the premier League. The fact that whoever drafted the original had seen that title stripping was a key part of the agreement in the first place.

This proves that these bodies treat a certain club with kid gloves and they are given benefits no other club would get.

Whether PL knew of the details of an early draft is not important, he was given no say and not consulted, but the biggest club in the country were given no part in the decision making of the Bodies.

  26. Jack Hendry – did himself no favours by selling tickets on the side. However treated and mocked woefully by more than a few. He lived the dream, pulled on the jersey and earns money others could only dream about. Good luck to him.
