Rugby refereeing leaving football in wake

336

Honestly, see these rugby types complaining about a referee, don’t they know these things even themselves out over the season? What’s that? You mean the maths suggest that random events don’t even themselves out with small sample sizes, such as cup ties (sample of 1) and games against rivals (same of 4)?

The ‘even themselves out’ brigade could do with some remedial maths, it’s statistical hokum.

Within 24 hours of a mistake World Rugby called it so. No ‘referees’ union’ stonewalling, no defending the indefensible, no conspiracy to hide a lie, no tolerance of unacceptable standards, no fans left wondering why their game was misaligned with the rules. Without delay, World Rugby set the record straight, there is literally nothing more to see here.

Compare and contrast with our own sport in Scotland. The ‘referees’ union’ is alive and well, indefensible decisions are excused by a myriad of excuses, unacceptable standards have been tolerated for decades, instead of an explanation, fans are left with a vacuum into which they attempt to construct reason (which is very unhelpful). And although a referee quickly declared his own lie, the culture of the SFA was such that it was not declared beyond the Association until after a whistle-blower made sure it was known. Fifa is not the only football organisation bedevilled by a culture of cronyism.

Scottish football is under no pressure from above to improve. Fifa and Uefa thrive in the culture which has recently been revealed – largely by US prosecutors and journalists, some of whom have been whistling in the wind for 30 years. This percolates down to national associations, who are filled with office holders, appointed by the same patronage culture which allowed Michel Platini pocket 2m Swiss francs from Sep Blatter’s Fifa.

Nor is there sufficient pressure on the SFA from member clubs, apart from Celtic and one or two others, who are viewed as pariahs by some at Hampden, for the persistent flow of DVD-enclosed performance complaints.

It’s not easy being a referee; good ones are invaluable. They will continue to make mistakes at all levels, in all sports, but it should be easy to have an open culture which recognises the interests of the paying spectators. Just as World Rugby does. Protecting referees with a wall of silence is, in fact, not protecting them at all.

    Big day in Canada today.

They had a general election. Haven’t seen any indications of outcome.

Or indeed what the issues were.

*the good guys won, this was not just about ousting the conservatives but getting rid of a right wing tea party Christian fundamentalist PM.

  11. The SMSM don’t have an anti-Celtic agenda.

They’re populated by thick Huns who detest us, but there’s no ‘agenda’; they don’t have the wits to project any kind of sustained smear campaign that would alter public perceptions to their liking.

What we get is constant nuisance – irritating little barbs from irritating little barbstards like McCann, and other acolytes of the Damned among the hacks who have grown up gorging on financial doping and silverware gained by proven cheating.

    There’s no agenda, just agitation.

Different with the MIBs, though. They have the will and on ocassion the power to affect Celtic’s destiny. The pointed difference with referess in other countries is that those fellas got into officiating due to a love/fascination with the game and the desire to play a part at the highest level their ability will take them.

In Scotland, they get into reffin’ only in order to get the experience of running about on the Mordor pitch during a ‘big’ match. Their agenda comes from their brothertly fraternity, which we’ve witnessed regularly, season after season and had to overcome to get where we are today, top of the pile despite our environment.

I do believe though, that as the latest shuffling incarnation of the Plague suffers and dies, that a new generation of referees will gradually emerge without the Hun mindset; that those archaic values will be recognised as such; that affiliation with the shambles that used to play out of Govan will no longer be a driving motivation.

Until then, we are stuck with the likes of silly wee billy boy Muir, whose gallus interpretation of the very simple rules on Saturday hinted at the new goat in his ludge being a real raver if that’s how far he was prepared to go for first shot.

What should the Cellic board do about it? Issue a statement? There are some who have itchy statement-trigger-fingers, demanding proclamations on anything from pie shortages to Hoopy’s performances. I think if we had failed to win the game we might have heard sometihng. from the ivory towers. As it is, they may wait for a more poignant time, and laugh off Muir’s attempts to de-rail us.

Is that not an admirable stance? To belittle the forlorn machinations of wee masonic halfwits? Or you may think it is a poor silence, a back-o’-the-bus approach. I’m somewhere in-between; I’d like to see some sort of flippant dismissal of Muir’s efforts, like PL’s lauhging-at-the-Huns presser; let them know we’re aware, but how little we care for them. If there’s anything that riles up those self-righteous bastards in their ludges and lunatic asylums it’s scorn – mock them until they bleed from the eyes; remember, they’re ‘a big club’…

Of course, when the Hun dies once more and reaches for the reset button, will we see a flood of posters on here praising PL and Celtic’s incumbents for their role in it? For their strategy of focussing primarily on Celtic these past ten seasons and aiming for efficiency over bankruptcy whilst our enemies blew mega-millions and made mistake after fatal mistake? Damned if they do, damned if they don’t. In the magnanimous vein of CQN, I’m sure we will see credit where it’s due…

Whilst I don’t doubt the general theory that Sevco are running on fumes, he’s had two very specific stories recently which have not come to pass.

    1. That Llambias was “on his way” back to Ibrox at the behest of MA

    2. That Murray Park could close today.

Perhaps a strategy of feeding false stories in order to find-the-mole going on at the Crumbledome?

  14. Wonder if Her Maj, Cameron or the old Duke have got round to asking Xi Jinping about the ‘Dying Rooms’ or does that kind of thing come into Basil’s ‘Don’t talk about the War’ category.

  15. Just a we heads up for anyone that’s interested, if your watching the CL tonight and not to fussy about what game you wanted to watch like I was in the last games, if you have BT do yourself a favour an watch the CL goals program they have it’s absolutely brilliant, right from KO it shows you every goal and incidents as the games are being played live, and it’s not four guys sitting around a table with earphones on telling you what happened, my mate told about it, and I think it is brilliant, unless it’s Celtic playing I’m not real interested to be very honest, give it a try, see for yourself HH

All the more remarkable considering that on a game for game basis, injury meant that he played the equivalent of around ten full seasons.

The greatest Celt I never had the pleasure of seeing.
