Rugby refereeing leaving football in wake

336

Honestly, see these rugby types complaining about a referee, don’t they know these things even themselves out over the season? What’s that? You mean the maths suggest that random events don’t even themselves out with small sample sizes, such as cup ties (sample of 1) and games against rivals (same of 4)?

The ‘even themselves out’ brigade could do with some remedial maths, it’s statistical hokum.

Within 24 hours of a mistake World Rugby called it so. No ‘referees’ union’ stonewalling, no defending the indefensible, no conspiracy to hide a lie, no tolerance of unacceptable standards, no fans left wondering why their game was misaligned with the rules. Without delay, World Rugby set the record straight, there is literally nothing more to see here.

Compare and contrast with our own sport in Scotland. The ‘referees’ union’ is alive and well, indefensible decisions are excused by a myriad of excuses, unacceptable standards have been tolerated for decades, instead of an explanation, fans are left with a vacuum into which they attempt to construct reason (which is very unhelpful). And although a referee quickly declared his own lie, the culture of the SFA was such that it was not declared beyond the Association until after a whistle-blower made sure it was known. Fifa is not the only football organisation bedevilled by a culture of cronyism.

Scottish football is under no pressure from above to improve. Fifa and Uefa thrive in the culture which has recently been revealed – largely by US prosecutors and journalists, some of whom have been whistling in the wind for 30 years. This percolates down to national associations, who are filled with office holders, appointed by the same patronage culture which allowed Michel Platini pocket 2m Swiss francs from Sep Blatter’s Fifa.

Nor is there sufficient pressure on the SFA from member clubs, apart from Celtic and one or two others, who are viewed as pariahs by some at Hampden, for the persistent flow of DVD-enclosed performance complaints.

It’s not easy being a referee; good ones are invaluable. They will continue to make mistakes at all levels, in all sports, but it should be easy to have an open culture which recognises the interests of the paying spectators. Just as World Rugby does. Protecting referees with a wall of silence is, in fact, not protecting them at all.

  6. Regarding the living wage…..some things really shouldn’t be up for debate.

They are just the right thing to do and its appalling that our board are still battling to stave off doing so.

  7. BMCW

So what you are saying is no present staff are in negotiations with the board, well your going to fall at the first hurdle, you need to get one, there must be one somewhere ffs?

I’m in TLW camp, and you need a person/ people on or at that bargaining table or your Donald ducked, in my opinion, my union days are long gone, but I can guarantee you in my day I would have got one by now, three years ffs man? It’s called people skills, who has that in the ranks in the Trust?

Aye well….some folk of unbreakable faith….believe the gospel according to Celtic PLC.

There are other folk, who see Celtic PLC as nothing more than a, cronyism-clique-cloaked-in-confidentiallity-clauses.

Now I am no expert but for me the living wage should be the very least each member of staff at Celtic Park receive all this talk of can we afford it is just a smoke screen. If we bought one less dumpling each season we could easily afford to pay it the arguement comes down to our board who for some reason which escapes me dont seem to want to pay it. I like Peter Lawwell for me he does a decent job but his income from Celtic is obscene while others dont earn the living wage in my opinion there is no way it can be justified. H.H.

Given the potential for turmoil in the region, I’m sure those Bhoys lucky enough to be going have picked up on your hint to leave themselves plenty of time to get to the Aker Stadion tomorrow night!

No chance the Match announcer will be playing ‘Waterfall’ in the build-up then, for fear of provoking a pitch invasion by the gals?

I genuinely don’t know if any employee is represented at the table-or even if there is a negotiating table.

The impression I get is that it is up to the company, same as every company.

I think it shameful that we are dragging out heels over this. And if-as is being suggested-people don’t feel sufficiently secure in their employment to argue their case,I’ll be disappointed.

In a Michael Corleone kinda way.

That’s why sometimes outside representation is required.

  20. The Living Wage should be the very least that any person should be asked to work for.The clue is in the title. The fact that this board had to be shamed into paying it is a disgrace to everything Celtic are supposed to stand for.Well done to anyone highlighting this matter and trying to force our club into complying.

Just a question.Did Celtic not agree to start paying The Living Wage at the last meeting,or was this a “We will look into this matter”.I cannot remember the wording.

  21. Turkeybhoy on 21st October 2015 11:47 am

They agreed to pay it, while at the same time stating that they won’t be signing up to anything that commits them to it.

As I understand it, Celtic pay all their directly employed staff the living wage or above and as a result of this increase, any bonus schemes were removed. Arguably it is better to have wages guaranteed each month, rather than a periodic bonus which can be both subjective and judgemental, unless of course you have the initials PL and then you are paid greater than 100% of your maximium entitled bonus award.

However, to be an accredited living wage employer, you must ensure that the subcontractors you employ also ensure that they pay their staff a living wage.

  23. I see “Warbs”is a bit upset that his “Wonder kid”Oduwa, you know the guy,the one that likes to try and humiliate opponents, who have just completed an 8 hour shift,in their full time job, while he saunters around the training ground practicing his wee tanner baw tricks,is being a bit roughly treated by said opponents.

The disgrace of it all.How is he supposed to maintain the “Revolution”when big rough, tough, laborers and plumbers who train twice a week, seem determined to thwart his plans?.

After match comments from the”Warbmeister”included,”A letter will be off first thing in the morning to that alleged referees father”.

  24. Kev J,

No,Lustig was not injured when Celtic signed him.Simunovic played against Ajax,so obviously was not injured.

Derk was the biggest travesty of modern times, but,as some people try to do,was no fault of PLs.

We have Scouts, and a full medical team to back them up.When they are satisfied, they then tell PL the price, and he then goes on their say so.Buy or not, after he negotiates the said price and wages.

The ongoing mystery of the Celtic scouting department remains.Defenders and midfielders we have an excellent record in uncovering, even Goalkeepers.Forwards,abysmal.Why this has not been addressed,is a scandal.
