Rugby will give green light for peoples’ game too

203

Scotland went into the current level of restrictions with an infection rate marginally below that of England, this week, we are marginally higher.  Millions of individual actions go into these figures but evidence for the effectiveness of closing outdoor events does not exist.  They remained open in England but shut in Scotland.

Scottish Rugby have a home game against England at Murryfield scheduled for 6 February, a game they threatened to take to Newcastle, if current restrictions were not lifted.  Newcastle United host 50,000 spectators each home game without troubling their infection rates.  On socioeconomic terms, football and rugby are miles apart.

Our governments in Edinburgh and London only care about one when their flag of choice can be waved to a patriotic anthem.  Scotland moving a rugby game to England, or vice versa, would be anathema – the opposite of a patriotic opportunity.  Whatever steps necessary to keep the Scotland-England rugby game at Murrayfield will be taken.

Today, the First Minister has little choice but to relent and open what is scientifically believed to be the safest way to meet and interact with other people – outdoor events.  I fear some random limit below Celtic Park capacity, and of a temporary nature that expires before 6 February, but hopefully 60,000 of us will be able to gather on Monday to see our new Japanese recruits play for Celtic for the first time.

We are far from through with this scourge and need to follow scientific advice (if not government words and actions).  Limit indoor interactions, keep windows open and all spaces ventilated, meet outdoors whenever possible, follow clear scientific advice and roll up your sleeve.  And are you really too special to wear a mask?

IKEA have decided to withdraw Statutory Sick Pay entitlement from UNVACCINATED employees absent through COVID-19.

Can’t agree with that at all. Smells like a money-saving scam to me, using Covid as a convenient excuse.

  2. The decision to move forward the winter break has been completely vindicated. I’m sure Scottish Sports media will point that out…

  3. Sierra Leone with 3 Kamaras in the line up, and 2 more on the bench. Could get really confusing.😊

Mass absences are killing companies and Omnicron is spreading rapidly amongst the unvaccinated.

Seemed sensible to me, although emotive.

  7. Tom McLaughlin at 2.47 pm re IKEA, where are you seeing that?

I heard unvaxxed staff would be limited to the Statutory amount; IKEA usually pay more.

  8. You would think Celtic, would bring as much kudos to a sporting event than say rugby would.

Are you saying Paul Celtic will once again be a total eunuch in the face of gov pressure?

Ie do nothing and behave as tho they are not a multimillion pound industry important to the economy of Glasgow and West of Scotland…ie like they have done so far.

BB, to be fair, Ryanair and Aer Lingus have played fair most of the time on refunds/credits etc. There was a lot of schedule changing late 2021 but you could re-book free if they cancel/move a flight.

surprised they were able to find out who was vaxxed or not. My company asked us but could not make us tell them (they leaned pretty heavy though).

We are under Irish/EU law but i would be surprised if the UK had altered this law post brexit – GDPR etc

  24. Parting shot — things getting busy / busy / busy …

Yeti / Abominable No-man aka Stx2 @ last night — Your complete rejection of any form of “growth” agenda was interesting. It would suggest that when Wee FMcC rocked up you were out there backing the board saying that we do not need to change anything and that progress of any sort was not for the likes of us.

Coming up for 28 years since FMcC changed the club and the stadium forever — he got his reward financially and we got our rewards performance wise within 10 years with Seville and the BM dancing on the park episode because they had managed to get a draw.

Consequently things need to change and we need to burst a gut to get us up the football food chain. AP is currently a one man army doing all the work on his lonesome. The player angle is looking much better but the coaching staff is paper thin and how our efforts at free kicks / throw ins / penalties / corners are the stuff of pub team sophistication. Hopefully help in this field is on its way — the sooner the better.

B team stadium — lots of good chat about the project.

The entry into a senior league has really put the “reserve” team into the spotlight.

Good start but needs a lot more management time and coaching / investment.

The club desperately needs more vision and leadership from the boardroom — PL is/was holding us back with his low rent / second rate / property bean counter ways so the new bloke just has to do nothing to be better than what has gone before.

Beyond irony that PL with his property background has delivered so little regarding stadium and its environs — a local landmark was demolished and replaced by some slabs and some streetlights / flagpoles. Not a great return for all the money that we paid him over his 17 years — if we had cut his rewards by half there would have been £10mill to invest in the stadium and its surroundings and that would have made some difference.

The B team stadium should just be the start.

The stadium masterplan should be ripped up and started again.

This time with a landmark hotel on the corner at London Road.

Plus any plans should include a new / extended main stand that we desperately need.

Huge potential for bigger income streams from better fan facilities — just a case that too many at P/head don’t have the vision or the energy to make it happen.

We are leaders in the East End and we need to start behaving like that.

Push / cajole the council into public realm improvement from P/head to the Merchant City.

Provide proper footpaths and transport plans to support the crowds we do get.

Ask questions about the traffic management that is slowing the dispersal of traffic in a manner that was not the case 10 / 15 years ago — someone in PS is at the madam with the current arrangements and it needs to be called out.

We had a huge opportunity 2016/18 and we blew it through DD’s bruised ego and in-fighting.

AP is building something special at the moment and the league is there for us if we put all our efforts in — 6 points is not insurmountable with the squad and talent we have and the talent and endeavour we could bring in over the next three weeks.

Back up GK / experienced CB / all action defensive pivot — we have vacancies at the moment.

Who cares if the TFOD2.1 goes to the wall if we win the league — it would not be an issue to them if the roles were reversed so it should not be an issue for us now. The “OF” surrender monkeys on the board need to lose the cringe and wise up — if we really need the TFOD2.1 hale and hearty to survive then they have led us into a quicksand of their own making.

Europe is where it is at and global links are the future — not a WCS / National Bigotry Week 4 times a season. Here’s hoping that fresh eyes are starting to make a difference.

The game against SM’s new look Hibbees is looking like a quality contest — re-run of the LC Final and that had its moments.

Are you the same Madmitch who yesterday said Celtic should build a multi-storey car park behind the Jock Stein Stand and put a mini football stadium on top of it for the B team and the Ladies team, and then slaughtered PL for not having already thought of it and built it?

I had to check who posted that. It was too close to the truth for some posters :-)

The FM keeps moving the goalposts, one minute she loves rugby and hates football then she loves the huns and hates Celtic and finally she just hates Catholics. I’m totally confused. Now that we are back on Monday does that mean she loves everyone or hates everyone? Asking for a friend.

Plus when is the ethnic cleansing going to start? I don’t want to buy a new house if I’m just going to be firebombed out. Anyone with any inside info I’d appreciate a bit of warning.

    Good post and Thought provoking..

We are fundamental to the East End regeneration programme. We are major players in the local economy.

I think the SRU flexed their muscle and the result is self explanatory. We are a mega player, we need to recognise and act on it.

And I believe Ange will bring in his own man,. Every manager needs a confidant.

    Enjoy the journey.
