Rules, standards, attitude, what Scott Brown actually did for Celtic

340

I was at the Celtic FC Foundation Dinner last week and guest Charlie Mulgrew was asked about the best he had played with at Celtic.  He mentioned Virgil van Djik and Victor Wanyama as greats but told us the best was Scott Brown.  “Even when we were playing fives or sevens, his team almost always won.”  When you hear comments like this, you pay attention.

Scott retired yesterday after winning 23 major trophies, a joint record in British football held with Billy McNeill, 22 of Scott’s won at Celtic, his first at Hibernian.  He was adored by his managers as much for his attitude as his ability.  Leading by example, there would be no hiding in a Celtic shirt with Scott on the field, no unnecessary lingering on the treatment table.  As captain since 2010, he was the first line of enforcement of rules and standards.

This season was spent as player and assistant to Stephen Glass at Aberdeen, a venture that did not work out, although a goal at Ibrox, a venue he previously endured abuse and assault at, could yet prove to be a vital contribution in the title race.  He left a day after his former mentor, Neil Lennon, accepted a managerial job in Cyprus.  Hmmm.

In person, he could not have been more different than the bulldog he resembled on the pitch; he is intelligent and relaxed.  You know the stats, there is no correlation between playing and managing ability, so let’s not burden Scott with any expectations.  Hope to see him back soon at Celtic Park.

None of that, whether true or not, detracts from my point that Russia has virtually no history of deposing autocratic leaders.

  2. I think what we need to know is exactly what Aidan McGeady thinks about the whole situation.

  3. p.s. My post was directed at Canmalar and I am not seeking or will I respond to any reply,

Enjoying the Posts about Brooney et al, total Celtic Legend.

No more from me on the subject.Once in their heads, nothing will change it.

I’m sure you didn’t mean to, but your last sentence above gives the game away.

What country does have a history of overthrowing despotic leaders?

Despotic leaders usually get overthrown when they lose a war / or they look like they will lose a war.

Russia is not an outlier in this — Q+D analysis so don’t get too technical.

More likely outcome is that Ukraine falls but sustains a long drawn out resistance/insurgency supplied by the west which ties up the Russian military for the foreseeable, thus leaving them vulnerable on other fronts.

I can see how such a scenario would suit certain interests.

Someone with a bit of state craft about them has to devise a face saving off ramp for Russia because the only other options are all horrible to a greater or lesser extent.

My initial point was to challenge the opinion that the Russians have a history of deposing autocrats. They don’t.

Whether others have done has no bearing on what I said.

  9. If Scott Brown can’t add something of value at Celtic Park, then I’m a Dutchman. Maybe not at this particular moment in time, and I understand why that might be the case(if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it) then surely next season.

Ange is working without a designated assistant manager – what about Broonie for that role?

  10. Football moves on and as much as Scott Brown was a great player and captain, we are in great place on and off the park. I’m not sure what Scott would bring to the first team as an elite coach and I don’t think Ange will look at it. I cant say we’ve missed Scott on the park this season, Calum is doing a great job and I’m very impressed with the overall professionalism and mentality of the group.

I know there have been widespread calls to bring him home but football isn’t a game of sentiment.

Russia vs autocracy — fair enough but I think that you are being a bit harsh.

some excellent posts on Russia there; historic and also how Russia get out of this massive error

  14. WGS waxws lyrical about Broony but I think the latter wasn’t really a first pick under his tenure – more as a sub.

Of course, his form would have been affected by the tragic passing of his sister around that time.

  15. No more hires based on seniment over fit with the club’s footballing philosophy for me.

Give Ange the infrastructure and budget and we’ll be racking them up in the years ahead.

And anyway, blood, snotters, fist pumps and t-shirts in blizzards machismo is so last century…

The heart says there simply has to be a role for Scott.

However, what would it be – now or bext season?

He may well be too close to the players to be Ange’s trusted lieutenant. Does he perform the social role? The arm round the shoulder players friend? I’m not sure we need that now.

It’s an interesting one and I’m sure we’ll see Scott back at CP in the fullness of time

Agree that sometimes sentiment can be a poor marker when recruiting, but what about a proven winner and motivator who achieved all his record-breaking success at Celtic? Surely that must count for something?

    Yup.

  21. Scott Brown to Celtic at the moment? Would end it tears. Not what either party needs. In the future perhaps but not now.

  22. Ok, here is a mad mad con theory.

It’s all part of a plan, why now ? Phase two if you like, Putin could have in the past eight years done what he is presently doing and liberated the Donbass, just remember that all wars are banker wars and this one is no different.

If anyone who cares they could easily find out that IMB among others funded both sides in the second WW, as with everything else it’s all about the money and eff the people.

By the by, Putin was a young leader of the WEF along with a host of others, look it up, it’s not hidden, the head of the WEF said so himself, kinda give a little credence to my mad theory, as ever time will tell.

How do you deal with a problem like Maria … sorry Russia?

Not sure how old the stat is but back in the day Moscow was the third most expensive city to do business in.

Not sure the details — must have been for foreigners to do business in.

And this for a country with an EU relegation zone level of average wages / wealth.

So something was very wrong with the economics of it all.

Russia old school is into Klondyking — hoovering up natural resources as quick as possible with a winner takes all attitude and foreigners must have been seen as a natural resource that needed to be exploited.

In years gone by they walked all across the north of Asia looking for cute / cuddly animals they could turn into fur coats without needing to put in the effort of farming them — I think it left a mark in the national psyche.

So you have the cost of living in Moscow issue for foreigners — how much can you screw out of them in the here and now rather than calling it canny and taking the long view of economic development.

Then you have old school Russian economics — if you want two of anything then the cost goes up as the seller has more leverage in the deal if you need two or more of anything.

Not quite what is in the Ladybird Book of Economics but a revelation on how Russia does business.

Ukraine at a very personal level doesn’t want any of this or it has realised over time that it doesn’t want any of this — it would rather look west and deal with the EU with its openness and its diversity rather than east / Russia with its rigid big man economics.

Cue Nae Pals Russia in a big huff.

Broony at 36 years of age was head and shoulders above any other player in the SPFL.

What does that say about the SPFL??

A legend without doubt was / is Broony.

    SPFL is dead.

Killed by the OldFirm£53 liars, fixers, easy meat Tims, corruptor’s.

In 2008 Broony getting suspended for the crucial title run actually helped Celtic and WGS win 3 titles in a row, and saved WGS so that he and Broony could blow 4 in a row, keeping Dracula-FC alive for another year of bigoted cheating, 3 in a row wouldn’t have been won with Broony in the team because he, at that time, was not being the midfield force that he said on the tin. Broony lost his way, very sadly as his sister passed away at that time, may she rest in peace 🙏 whilst Celtic brought in a clipboard manager, Ronny, a manager who allowed himself to be outmaneuvered by a dressing room clique, a manager who was appointed after Roy Keane was interviewed for the Celtic managers job, but Keano knocked back Celtic’s approach, presumably because he didn’t fancy being a puppet?? Keano was doing CL highlights on ITV and Celtic had just been thrashed by PSG, under Brendan Rodgers, and Keano said,…

“That isn’t Celtic. Celtic don’t play like that, setting themselves up to be ripped apart, Celtic don’t do that, and that is with the manager who is supposed to better than, Ronny Deila?? I was interviewed for that job just over 2 years ago, and I was the ((10th candidate )) to be interviewed and said no. I don’t know how many more interviews took place after myself, before Celtic got to, RD?? But this is RD’s replacement, Brendan Rodgers, and he is even worse!!! Look at them!!! I think Celtic supporters expected better than this?? This is the stage, CL groups, that Celtic want to promote the club on, and they turn up like this??”

Keano was actually holding back whilst saying this 👆 he was visibly about to say a few things, and each time, he motioned his hand in front of his mouth as though, waving away (( nah I better not say what I’m really thinking )) head shaking kind of gesture!!!

Can’t imagine what kind of player Broony would’ve been had Keano been the manager??

Commons, Mulgrew, Broony, and the rest of the clique would’ve been begging to leave Celtic if Keano became Celtic manager imho, if the clique couldn’t handle, John Collins, straight talk, I couldn’t see them handling Keano.

  26. Doubt we will see Broonie back this season, I would also doubt that Ange will want him back, just a hunch.

Whatever he decides I wish him all the best, he deserves it big time IMO.
