Rules, standards, attitude, what Scott Brown actually did for Celtic

340

I was at the Celtic FC Foundation Dinner last week and guest Charlie Mulgrew was asked about the best he had played with at Celtic.  He mentioned Virgil van Djik and Victor Wanyama as greats but told us the best was Scott Brown.  “Even when we were playing fives or sevens, his team almost always won.”  When you hear comments like this, you pay attention.

Scott retired yesterday after winning 23 major trophies, a joint record in British football held with Billy McNeill, 22 of Scott’s won at Celtic, his first at Hibernian.  He was adored by his managers as much for his attitude as his ability.  Leading by example, there would be no hiding in a Celtic shirt with Scott on the field, no unnecessary lingering on the treatment table.  As captain since 2010, he was the first line of enforcement of rules and standards.

This season was spent as player and assistant to Stephen Glass at Aberdeen, a venture that did not work out, although a goal at Ibrox, a venue he previously endured abuse and assault at, could yet prove to be a vital contribution in the title race.  He left a day after his former mentor, Neil Lennon, accepted a managerial job in Cyprus.  Hmmm.

In person, he could not have been more different than the bulldog he resembled on the pitch; he is intelligent and relaxed.  You know the stats, there is no correlation between playing and managing ability, so let’s not burden Scott with any expectations.  Hope to see him back soon at Celtic Park.

One way tickets for now. They live 40kms from the Russian border and there is a growing fear that Putin is planning to take over there too. Just an insight, I guess, of the ripple effect of war.

Imagine Celtic even thinking about going to Australia, never mind going to promote the OldFirm£53 fraud, raking in money to keep Ibrox lights on, in a country that throws its citizens into camps because they don’t want to take a pharmaceutical product that hasn’t even been through its safety tests?? don’t Celtic know that only a matter of weeks ago, Aussie aboriginal folk set fire to the Parliament building in protest at the brutality because of a virus?? Aussie govt microwaving grannie and grandas, and grandchildren, who were among a, 750,000 strong peaceful protest less than a month ago ffs!!! obviously these demonically led govts will not be moved by peaceful protests, why do you think everybody is terrified to look at the huns the wrong way, or ask them to play by any said rules?? the huns civil unrest would burn every Parliament to the ground that’s why nobody will face them down on any issue EVER!!! the huns “hunt in packs like wild wolves” said a Manchester police official after 250,000 drunken huns descended on the city of Manchester in 2008 for Uefa Cup Final which huns lost 0-2 to Zenit lol anyway Celtic PLC are waving the Davos flag oot the boardroom window as Celtic supporters are cheering on imperial media lies?? fkn make it stop…

The fairytale of Celtic fc, died on the Celtic Way, on March 4th 1994, when the Celtic (( Rebel Consortium )) group of dissident shareholders were stabbed in the back by, Fergus McCann, so dissident shareholders didn’t invest in sleeki McCann’s sleekit plans so they baled and Celtic run out of money in October 1994, only Gerald McNee reported on this, hmmmm, McCann who reneged on his promise to give Celtic fc to its supporters after the 5 year rebuild, and now Celtic fc is cemented to the London Stock Exchange, therefore it is cemented to, Wall Street, therefore, Celtic fc, isn’t Celtic fc, anymore, Celtic is now a rich man’s plaything.

Michael Kelly was a lot of things, but he was also correct when, in 1994, he said,….

“Celtic supporters will now see a way forward for the club, in the fullness of time, Celtic supporters will look back to March 4th, 1994, as the day that Celtic fc lost its soul.”

Even, Charlie Nicholas was correct in his column in, The Daily St*r, when he said,….

“Celtic isn’t a force for its community anymore, the club is now a rich man’s plaything.”

and strangely….both Lawwell, and Lennon, were wheeled out to respond to, Charlie Nicholas, and his supposedly, innocuous column?!?!?!

Not bad eh?? from the piss flowing Jungle, to Wall Street toys.

  24. I will be attending a foundation event beginning April with some fantastic CQN people, money being well spent assisting refugees

Celtic FC Foundation has today announced that it has made a £10,000 donation to the Scottish Refugee Council to support its work in supporting refugees coming to Scotland amidst the effects of the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Ukraine.

The Foundation is a long-time supporter of the Scottish Refugee Council and has assisted the charity across a range of initiatives for many years, backing their work in supporting those affected by various global refugee crises previously.

Based in Glasgow’s city centre, SRC is a leading, independent national human rights charity supporting refugees across Scotland since 1985. Working with families and individuals to protect their rights and support integration and inclusion, SRC aims to help those who have fled war, conflict or abuse of human rights, to rebuild their lives in safety.

The journey taken by many of those supported by SRC is rarely an easy one and the struggle does not always end on their arrival in the UK. Refugee families living in Scotland continue to face many challenges. They live in severe poverty and isolation.

Sabir Zazai, the CEO of the Scottish Refugee Council, said: “Celtic FC Foundation has supported our work with families time and again, enabling us to provide toys and food vouchers to the most vulnerable we work with.

“This assistance has also helped us to source and distribute hundreds of phones and tablets and help grassroots organisations across Scotland to assist their neighbours and communities during the pandemic.

“Scotland has demonstrated time and time again its commitment to solidarity and sanctuary for refugees seeking protection.

“We will keep fighting for refugee rights and against hostile environment policies, and with the help of donations from partners such as Celtic FC Foundation, we will work together to make Scotland a welcoming place for everyone.

“Last summer, we received an overwhelming number of incredibly generous offers of support from people across Scotland in response to the crisis in Afghanistan.

  25. Was Joe Miller, what you would call, the last genuine outside RIGHT that Celtic have had? In the tradition of Johnstone, Doyle and Provan? Ones that dribble, hug the touchlines and sprint by players.

Brian Mclaughlin played on the left for many seasons under Tommy Burns linking up with Tosh Mckinlay. Thommo played more on the left. McGeady played on the left too. He might have been even better as an outside right winger, he ended up playing no 7 for Ireland . Patrick Roberts was more left sided. Regi Blinker too. Wingers take players on and maybe lose the ball, is that why managers don´t play them so much nowadays. Wingers used to be almost like goalkeepers, unique and charasmatic types in a team.

Take the 1991 Hibs team that won the League Cup. Mickey Weir had the same gait at outside right as Jimmy Johnstone, at only 5 foot 4, the same height incidentally as the great Bobby Collins . John Burridge, Hibs’ goalie from that team is a legend, great story about how he puts Hateley and McCoist in their places in the semi final in September 1991.

Scott Brown has been offered a quickfire route back into football by former Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers.

Rodgers rejuvenated Brown’s Parkhead career when he took over the Hoops in 2016 with many writing the ex-Scotland captain off.

And following the 36-year-old’s departure from Aberdeen, Rodgers has given his former on-field lieutenant an opportunity to join him at Leicester City.

The Foxes boss has been in contact with his former Celtic captain since he took the decision to hang up his boots earlier this week.

Rodgers has invited Brown down to spend some time with him and his coaching staff in the Midlands over the coming weeks.

It would give Brown a much-needed insight into top-level management as he aims to revive his own coaching career.

Rodgers has also vowed to help Brown get back in the game and to help wherever he can in terms of helping him to land a new role.

  29. Poor Ernie. He always portrays himself as so bright, yet he cannot get it into his head that I was born in England and now live in Ireland. I am only a slightly interested observer in what should be a rational debate. Instead, he and JHB reduce the discussion to sound bites and insults about people’s intelligence and motives (blind sectarian hatred, according to JHB). Whilst I am only an observer, if Ernie is correct then surely any discussion about the 6 counties leaving the Union would also be insulting because what applies to Scotland surely applies here too?
