Rules, standards, attitude, what Scott Brown actually did for Celtic

340

I was at the Celtic FC Foundation Dinner last week and guest Charlie Mulgrew was asked about the best he had played with at Celtic.  He mentioned Virgil van Djik and Victor Wanyama as greats but told us the best was Scott Brown.  “Even when we were playing fives or sevens, his team almost always won.”  When you hear comments like this, you pay attention.

Scott retired yesterday after winning 23 major trophies, a joint record in British football held with Billy McNeill, 22 of Scott’s won at Celtic, his first at Hibernian.  He was adored by his managers as much for his attitude as his ability.  Leading by example, there would be no hiding in a Celtic shirt with Scott on the field, no unnecessary lingering on the treatment table.  As captain since 2010, he was the first line of enforcement of rules and standards.

This season was spent as player and assistant to Stephen Glass at Aberdeen, a venture that did not work out, although a goal at Ibrox, a venue he previously endured abuse and assault at, could yet prove to be a vital contribution in the title race.  He left a day after his former mentor, Neil Lennon, accepted a managerial job in Cyprus.  Hmmm.

In person, he could not have been more different than the bulldog he resembled on the pitch; he is intelligent and relaxed.  You know the stats, there is no correlation between playing and managing ability, so let’s not burden Scott with any expectations.  Hope to see him back soon at Celtic Park.

  1. Some battle for 3rd to 6th place in League, 6 teams within a point of each other,

Ross County have a tough finish, Celtic, Hearts & Dundee,

Think Hibs will make it. Next game out St. Mirren play Dundee United, winner there have a big chance,

Have a bad feeling that Livi will make it and we will to have go back there again.

I know we cuffed them last game, still don’t want to go back there for a 3rd time this Season,

Home, back to back meetings done and sitting on front porch with a cheeky wee IPA and enjoying the mild March weather. Was just getting to relax and spotted the local squirrels digging up my bulbs. Feck it, that’s a battle for another day.

  4. Just watching Sunday’s highlights for the first time. Good to see James Forrest back playing well and it was a good goal he scored.

We could be doing with him and his experience in the run in 👍🏼

  5. I heard Marvin Bartley on SSB earlier. He was very complimentary towards us. He mentioned the corner leading up to our goal but then went straight into how well we played.

He singled out Rogic, saying he was unplayable and he sounded in awe of some of the Ozzy’s play.

I searched for the phrase “what’s the highest score in Scottish Football” (on Duck Duck Go of course and not Google) and I came across the following blog post in the top few returns tonight.

Not sure I have ever read a more confused and inept, albeit it hilarious in parts and beautifully true, bot/AI post about fitba. It’ll take you two minutes. Enjoy.

    Hi.

Would it be possible if I contributed some articles to your fine blog? I’ve learned a few neat facts on here tonight.

    Hit me back.

I’ll see if he replies. Just thought I’d share a wee internet wormhole. One quoted stat says the highest score was 222-0. That’s 2.5 goals per min. Sack Ange.

  8. I hav yet to see anyone defend the actions of the Azov Battalion…but to use the alleged actions/abuses/atrocities of a very small minority (mibbe 2000) of Ukrainians actions in disputed occupied territories to justify, in your minds, the wholesale slaughter of men women and children over a wide front, in support of Putin, is disgraceful. De-natzification is not a reason, but a cheap political soundbite of an excuse used to try and reinstall another Russian puppet regime in Ukraine.

  9. 2000 people is approx 0.0000045321% of the Ukrainian population…now if that reflects a serious threat to Russia then Russia can legitimately be accused of having some seriously small dick energy

    TheLurkinTim,

So, in your first post you postulate a value, then in your second post you use that value to build an argument to justify a conclusion, shouldn’t your second post have been about justifying the value mibbe 2000 eh.

Believe nothing you hear and only half of what you see, I have to remind myself of this regularly.

I am seeing a lot of parallels on here with what happend in Lybia and continues in Syria. Back then very few refused to accept the thinkpol facts. As a dissenter in both cases I remember both very well. I did honestly expect more people to have used those experiences better. Some people have really surprised me in how easily they have returned to the grazing herd.

There reamain hardliners who still believe both conflicts were/are justified irrespective of any evidence to the contrary, the ongoing instability for the civilians is just collateral damage that can be blamed on the victim and not the perpetrator.

Meanwhile the demand to accept two tier asylum system for whites and all others is the biggest display of hypocricy I’ve seen in a long time. Human beings fleeing from war and oppression all suffer the same. Unobstructed migration for Ukrainans while concentration camps all over south eurpoe remain full of peope fleeing wars illegally started by NATO. I’m not saying don’t obstruct the Ukrainians I’m saying apply the same rules to everyone claiming asylum.

This week both Syria and Yemen were bombed by NATO supported regimes, zero interest in these people because their plight is not in your face. They tell you what you need to think, too many accept that without question and that for me is the most disappointing part in all of this.

  11. No justification for war crimes

Putin is a war criminal bombing a hospital ?

    Aljazeera reports

Photos: Russian bombing destroys hospital in Ukraine’s Mariupol

The ground shook more than a mile away when a children’s hospital with a maternity ward in Mariupol was hit by a series of blasts that blew out windows and ripped away much of the front of one building.

Police and soldiers rushed to the scene to evacuate victims, carrying out a heavily pregnant and bleeding woman on a stretcher.

Photos: Russian bombing destroys hospital in Ukraine’s Mariupol

Ukrainian officials say 17 wounded as Russian air strike hits a children’s hospital in the besieged city of Mariupol.

Another woman wailed as she clutched her child. In the courtyard, mangled cars burned, and a blast crater extended at least two storeys deep.

“Today Russia committed a huge crime,” said Volodymir Nikulin, a top regional police official, standing in the wreckage. “It is a war crime without any justification.”

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy wrote on Twitter that there were “people, children under the wreckage” and called the strike an “atrocity”. Video shared by Zelenskyy showed cheerfully painted hallways strewn with twisted metal.

  12. Canman…good to see you on…yep the original number is extrapolated from a bunch of sources including snopes n wiki…so am sure the next is close enuff

Your arguments are curious to me….wen I met you, you’d just flown in from a state that is notorious for violently suppressing dissent….and u weren’t happy….but now it seems you have no problem with the hypocrisy of defending the indefensible

    H.H.

  13. Canman…the wests reaction to Libya, Syria, Palestine, Sri Lanka et al are hypocritical…but you are wrong and lazy to compare them with Russian invasion of a Sovereign country

  14. Lionsroar67…Trump is an irrelevance and it behoves us all to ignore that Putin puppet POS

    Lionroars67,

Again unquestioning adherance to whatever you are told, RT were reporting on this incident last night and reported that Zelensky was quick to tweet it was an assault by the Russian airforce, They (RT) contacted the Mariupol civilian council for more information who advised they had no news on casualties. I did wonder if it would be you of the turkey that would be first to post their outrage. Really I do not remember you being so vociferous on Yemen is it because they is black?

While you race to condemn I will wait for evidence. How would Russia benefit from this?

Personally I do not believe the Russians targeted a maternity hospital full of innocent civilains with an airstrike which is what I’m being asked to believe.

I’m being told to accept that Putin made the order to take out a maternity hospital full of innocent civilains and this order trickled down the chain of command, why? Because he is evil?

  16. Canamalar it looks like OCD obsession on

    TheLurkinTim,

I was not talking about the west I was talkng about the people on this blog.

I’m not sure how I am wrong or lazy?

Everyone of those countries mentioned (except Sri Lanka, not sure where that comes from?) are/were soverign nations that were illegally invaded and most on here either couldn’t care less or supported the invasions because they believed/told they were justified, that is the hypocricy IMO. And is a valid comparison, you appear to be arguing that only NATO should be allowed to invade countries without UN approval. their perceived justification is that if Ukraine was part of NATO then in the age of hypersonic nuclear missiles Moscow is a 3 minute first strike target, remind which country has used nuclear strike strategy and why they should be trusted?

Russia told everyone involved in 2008 the expansion of NATO to its borders would be met with all means of resistance necessary. Last year the UK the USA signed pacts with the Ukrainian Junta and begun training and working with the Ukrainian military. NATO began working in the Ukraine and providing arms.

The Russians believe they were trying to integrate Ukraine into NATO through stealth. The Russian’s then reiterated their red lines, both NATO and Ukraine ignored them. The Ukraine has for the last 8 years been bombarding the Donbass region after signing the Minsk Accord, the lastest news out of Russia is that they have uncovered orders signed by Ukraine senior military, for an invasion in the Donbass planned for March.

What I find very suspicious about the latest news is that after Pentagon funded biolabs where discovered and the orders from the Ukraine ministry of health to destroy the evidence and materials that might fall into Russian hands there is as if on cue, a civilian atrocity committed by the Russian’s. Like they provide evidence to the world that the Ukraine and US caught red handed developing bio and chemical weapons in contravention of international law, then decide to shoot themselves in the foot with this, seriously?

How dumb am I expected to think the Russian’s are?

Sorry don’t remember if/when we met but I’ve been working in Qatar, UAE & Kuwait not sure which of those is notorious for violently suppressing dissen any more than say France or Australia where they use chemical weapons agains their own civilian populations, going to Jordan next knocked back Saudi and occupied Palestine recently.

Thinking of moving east after this, maybe China at least you know what you are getting it does what it says on the tin, does not pretend like the west to be a free liberal society, ther rules are set and easy to understand.

Then again El Salvador is looking good for us bitcoiners who are actually putting our money where our mouth is and removing all support for the fiat war machine.
