Rundown of possible opponents

1223

Austria Wien have played three league games this season, won one, drew one, lost one.  Scored six conceded eight.  Stuffed 5-1 by Salzburg two weeks ago.  They have only had to play one round of Champions League qualifiers so far, which they won 1-0 on aggregate against the Icelandic champions-cum-day-job-professionals. Send them over, please, Uefa.

Ludogorets Razgrad, from Bulgaria, knocked Dinamo Zagreb out of the Champions League qualifiers last season before going down to Slovan Bratislava in the play-off round.  They’ve won two, lost one, of their three league games this season.  Beat Partizan Belgrade home and away in last round, beat Slovan Bratislava on aggregate in round before that. They also have to play their home game for the next round at an alternate venue to due to a date clash with a concert. Happy to take this lot.

Legia Warsaw, won all three league games this season, scoring 12, conceding one.  Eliminated Molde, after drawing both games, in last round, took care of The New Saints (Wales) home and away in earlier round. Would be a great European tie though not sure if Zbyszek can arrange the result for us.

Maribor, from Slovenia, have won all three league games this season, scored 11, conceded two.  Eliminated APOEL Nicosia after two draws in last round.  APOEL got to the last eight of the Champions League in 2012, so this team are no pushover. Maribor also have the distinction of being the last team to knock Rangers out of Europe. Ever!

Shakhtyor Karaganda, 12 points off the pace after 22 games in Kazakhstan.  Beat Albanians, Korce, in last round and Bate Borisov (who recorded Champions League wins against Bayern Munich and Lille in 2012) in the earlier round.  The travel would be an issue; Karaganda is farther east that eastern Afghanistan. If I can paraphrase an Ibrox legend, define Europe. The fact they are midseason and, like Celtic, they’ve won through two rounds already, makes this a less attractive tie, but they are surely not a Champions League team.

Preferences: Shakhtyor Karaganda are the easiest possible opponents but a trip to Austria or Bulgaria would be best.

Would rather avoid: Legia will be the most difficult draw. Maribor will be a similar challenge as Elfsborg.

Lots more to blog about: last night’s performance, Kelvin, Honest Dave King… maybe later.

Exactly -you said 5/6 years ago

Time passes people have to move on

Frankly I thought it embarrassing when you had young? CFC supporters singing about the troubles in the north to a group of people who actually lived through it!

The term Plastic Paddies struck me for the first time as being apt on that occasion.

I certainly do not want to dilute our Irish origins and would probably stop going if I thought we were headed down that road.

PS Good luck for the season – I thought your support was excellent over both legs of the tie!

He won’t be banging on any doors. Just a yes man to the suits.

  3. On the Green Brigade and section 111 being closed as a result of lateral movement why then did GCC not take them to task for the “bouncy”?

A poster claimed that 390 seats were broken in section 111,when this was disputed by others.

As for politics in football it’s being going on for years.

Someone stated that the GB as Ultras could end up like the Ultras of Italian clubs?

Well that’s like saying the Celtic Directors could end up like directors of a dead club…

    see what I did there?

  4. Yet another example of the Scottish media trying to cause mischief with CP:

IAN Holloway has denied reports linking him with Celtic defender Efe Ambrose – saying he has never even heard of him.

  5. Mick

Good point about the bouncy and one which should be asked of the club and the council and the media.

Mixed feelings about the GB – I think they’re great but do think they do bring a lot of it on themselves and to an extent act up just to by rhebellious

OK …. let”s have a political menu distributed before every game ….the GB can then lead us in songs about poverty, unemployment etc (real politics / issues which have never been addressed since the day I was born)….. If you think about it, we can only influence our team’s performance at a game, and the GB are VERY GOOD at that ….. Influencing politicians is achieved by specifically organised campaigns, protests, and in the Ballot Box ……

  7. From Jockybhoy: “Precedent set”!!

Charles Green’s Sevco Scotland acquired “acquired Ibrox Stadium and Murray Park along with various other assets including intellectual property, goodwill and various contracts. Sevco Scotland Ltd subsequently changed its name to ‘The Rangers Football Club Ltd’ at the end of July 2012 and floated as Rangers International in December 2012. So I guess if “the club” doesn’t exist the company still has the property portfolio, trophies and er, “history”. Given the heritable properties were valued at £5m by the administrators, sold for £1.5m to Sevco as part of their overall deal but were revalued at £40m in the first interim accounts this would seem to be a very strong business proposition. HOWEVER it seems the club can never “crash & burn” as it doesn’t own anything, it’s only the company that runs the club that can crash & burn (as it did with the Rangers founded in the 1870s which is still in liquidation), so all the next guy has to do is buy the “intellectual property, goodwill and various contracts” off the next administrators for pennies in the pound and sell a couple of season tix and “the club” is up & running again. At least I think that’s the precedent set.

Sadly that message is, if you haven’t played in the EPL you’re not getting picked.

Once he has played a few times for Norwich Hooper will be in an England squad before the end of the year.

  11. Just got back to the USA after a golfing trip to Scotland with a few American friends. A few months back I requested recommendation for courses and accommodation from CQN and ended up with some great venues. Thanks to everyone who responded.

On our final round we met up with some CQN stalwarts including Rubicon, BlantyreKev, Eurochamps67, BJMac and Goldstar plus a couple of ringers (Tony and Billy) placed in there to make sure the Scots beat the Yanks in our Ryder Cup game.

It was an absolute pleasure to meet all the guys who could not have been more helpful to my group. To round off a perfect trip we took in the Ross County game at Parkhead as well.

Thanks Paul67 for providing this facility. It is clearly full of some outstanding people.

Are any of the Scottish EL games on the telly tonight, please…?

  14. hen1rik – The final piece of the jigsaw is having a football league sufficiently compliant to give you a league to play in so the season ticket purchasers have games to see…

  15. Malone Bhoy

    We were all young once…

If someone like Neil were to sit down with them and say what you do is fantastic, look at how Celtic managed to market your display in the Barcelona game around the word, marvellous!

Though other incidents will be used by certain quarters to attack Celtic then they could be persuaded to refrain.

Has anyone from the GB been prosecuted yet? seems quite a few have been up at court though.

  16. Just been sent an e-mail from an English mate of mine with about 25 photographs extolling the qualities of Scotland. Does anybody know where this is?

    Is that Roy Crappy?

  17. I’ve said before that we can’t allow an us vs them situation between the GB and the board or the GB and the rest of the support. It now looks like that is happening and that’s when you end up with a real ultras type section which can cause problems and discourage other elements of the support.

The GB should be a vocal point of the fans, not something that fights against the club. The club also shouldn’t force an enemy.

So all this needs sorted – immediately and resolutely – or the GB need to reform as something new and better or else we’re in for potentially troubling times.

    GB petition signed.

The ‘politics’ thing is a smokescreen. Celtic supporters have sung from the same repertoire since 1888. As long as there is nothing sectarian/bigoted its a waste of time going on about it.

Get the GB back and lets concentrate on making some noise and supporting our team at home and abroad.

  20. Looking at the passion in Mikel Lustig’s eyes after the game last night he seems to possess all the necessary credentials to be the next Celtic captain and of course he also delivers on the field as well.

I thought the standard of Celtic’s throw-ins were very poor against the Swedes and we cannot blame the pitch for this. More often than not they ended up with an opponent.

Looking at the list of teams left in the play-offs I cannot see any easy games there particularly now that we will be without Kelvin Wilson. We should not have to play a third game when one considers that teams who finished 25 points adrift of their champion are still in Champions Lge contention – grossly unfair.

Great achievement for the team and Neil to qualify for Europa and maybe further after losing some of his best players. Hope our play-off game will be against a team who have just started their season, we deserve it.

Neil will probably field a shadow eleven for the sell-out game against Liverpool in Dublin after Wednesday night’s exertions in Sweden.

  21. Gene's a Bhoy's name on

Just settling down to watch recording of last night’s game – how bad can it be?

  22. Mick

That is the whole problem. The huns (old and newco) never had to worry about piddling little distractions like rules and regulations.

Celtic on the other hand have to be twice as well behaved just to be treated half as well.

The same people who brought you “kettling”, constant video surveilance of The Green Brigade and mob handed dawn raids by dozens of riot gear clad cops to lift one 16 year old boy for singing a song that many Sheriffs have deem non sectarian, are the same ones who sit on the Safety Advisor Group that looks at Celtic’s compliance with H&S regulations before issuing a certificate. Now just think how stringently every last one of those rules will be enforced on Celtic and how loose an interpretation would apply to the huns (old or newco). Glasgow City Council couldn’t authorise the rally and march in Georges Square because the permission had not been sought 28 days in advance, but could not find anthing wrong with a bunch of huns dragging themselves to Hampden to intimidate the SFA.

Celtic have no choice but to enforce all aspects of H&S regs or they would be cheerfully shafted.

  23. hankray

Our throw-ins have been hopeless even going as far back as to the Lions.
