Rundown of possible opponents

1223

Austria Wien have played three league games this season, won one, drew one, lost one.  Scored six conceded eight.  Stuffed 5-1 by Salzburg two weeks ago.  They have only had to play one round of Champions League qualifiers so far, which they won 1-0 on aggregate against the Icelandic champions-cum-day-job-professionals. Send them over, please, Uefa.

Ludogorets Razgrad, from Bulgaria, knocked Dinamo Zagreb out of the Champions League qualifiers last season before going down to Slovan Bratislava in the play-off round.  They’ve won two, lost one, of their three league games this season.  Beat Partizan Belgrade home and away in last round, beat Slovan Bratislava on aggregate in round before that. They also have to play their home game for the next round at an alternate venue to due to a date clash with a concert. Happy to take this lot.

Legia Warsaw, won all three league games this season, scoring 12, conceding one.  Eliminated Molde, after drawing both games, in last round, took care of The New Saints (Wales) home and away in earlier round. Would be a great European tie though not sure if Zbyszek can arrange the result for us.

Maribor, from Slovenia, have won all three league games this season, scored 11, conceded two.  Eliminated APOEL Nicosia after two draws in last round.  APOEL got to the last eight of the Champions League in 2012, so this team are no pushover. Maribor also have the distinction of being the last team to knock Rangers out of Europe. Ever!

Shakhtyor Karaganda, 12 points off the pace after 22 games in Kazakhstan.  Beat Albanians, Korce, in last round and Bate Borisov (who recorded Champions League wins against Bayern Munich and Lille in 2012) in the earlier round.  The travel would be an issue; Karaganda is farther east that eastern Afghanistan. If I can paraphrase an Ibrox legend, define Europe. The fact they are midseason and, like Celtic, they’ve won through two rounds already, makes this a less attractive tie, but they are surely not a Champions League team.

Preferences: Shakhtyor Karaganda are the easiest possible opponents but a trip to Austria or Bulgaria would be best.

Would rather avoid: Legia will be the most difficult draw. Maribor will be a similar challenge as Elfsborg.

Lots more to blog about: last night’s performance, Kelvin, Honest Dave King… maybe later.

    Have you ever chopped up a Habanero chilli and gone to the toilet immediately after doing so? Well worse than that!

    I think I read the deadline for a signing for the play off is 12th August. Am I dreaming? Is there a one player 24 hr before deadline as in the previous rounds?

  5. Hankray

    Our throw ins are crap due to the lack of options.

    Normally one guy shows and he is usually double teamed so no surprise we lose possession .Our lack of off ball movement is shocking.

    A couple of hours per day working from home.gradual build up until returning to work..

  7. EldiegoBhoy…….

    Players give the impression of being reluctant to recieve the ball from a throw-in consequently it’s easy for the opponent regain possession. You see it in the SPL and particularly in the big European games.

  8. Yea, as close as can be without striking the woodwork. Just thinking about Mo there & I’m wondering if he can do a Sammy on the wings when he returns to the club, as he seems very effective at running with the ball at his feet & causes all sorts of problems in the air. Anybody know if he’s strong with both feet?

    Bangura hand ball -no booking -whit?

    Especially considering the referee went for his cards & heading in Mo’s direction before (what it seemed to me) changing his mind.

    Are Celtic POSSIBLY waiting until CL qualification before signing a player(s), since playing in the CL will be more attractive to better quality players …?

  16. The board need to be paying very close attention to the demographics of the supporters.

    Hate to say this but most of the people who bought shares in 1994 will be gone in around 10 years time. Around half of all the women in Scotland over 40 have no children.

    Where will the new generation of supporters come from when we are actively discouraging and dispersing the GB?

    To paraphrase Jock Stein…….football is nothing without the supporters……..

    Already sections of the stadium are in mothballs for parts of the season and it is not directly linked to the demise of the orcs although they have accelerated the process.

    The fundamental question arises here: Are we in it to win it in a football sense or are we operating the PLC to maximise profit as if we are B&Q, ASDA etc

    An increasingly ageing population and by definition Celtic supporter base means the stadium will be half empty in the medium term.

    What will you do Peter?

  17. Silenced

    Haven’t seen much of Mo Bangura but looking at him last night he seems to have great upper body strength and won a lot of the one-on-one challenges with our central defenders.

    But can he score goals?

  18. Tiny Tim!

    Thanks for sticking up for me but as you know I’m the laid back type and I wasn’t too offended by Neganon2.

    I could have put him in his place by letting him know I run a successful business now employing 11 people. Turnover has quadrupled in 4 years since I took over and the outlook is good.

    No too bad for someone he slated for having no financial awareness.

    Anyway, I hope business is booming for you too?

    Last night, dearie me, how stressful was that?

    We were absolutely awful but it’s a good sign that we can play as badly as that and still get a result!! We’re through and at the end of the day that’s what matters.

    A decent striker is what we need, what’s the latest news anyone on potential signings?

  19. Silenced

    Neil Lennon has transformed some of the lads who were deemed no-hopers into real players at the club. Perhaps he can work the oracle on Mo Bangura.

  20. Stadium Safety

    I know nothing about structural engineering so cannot comment on some posts about the effect/non-effect of lateral movement on the stadium.

    Keeping the issue at an individual safety level, my view is that it is easily foreseeable that an accident could happen due to a person falling off the end of a terrace if they lose footing or overbalance through lateral movement.

    The stadium is quite steep (more so than the previous terracing) and injuries ranging from a minor ankle strain through to a head falling against the corner of concrete steps could occur. No-one wants to see a fan with a cracked head, or worse still, the fatal damage that our great John Thompson suffered through a blow to the head.

    Directors of any organisation have a foremost duty to maintain the health and safety of employees and members of the public. The directors could be held personally responsible with charges up to corporate manslaughter. They are even more exposed if an event was foreseeable and I surmise that a Risk Assessment has identified personal injury risk and the Directors have acted to protect the supporters, the club and themselves.

    http://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/indg417.pdf

    The Health and safety Executive sets out the following regarding directors’ duties:

    Essential principles:

    Strong and active leadership from the top:

    Visible, active commitment from the board;

    Establishing effective ‘downward’ communication systems and management

    structures;

    Integration of good health and safety management with business decisions.

    Worker involvement:

    Engaging the workforce in the promotion and achievement of safe and

    healthy conditions;

    Effective ‘upward’ communication;

    Providing high-quality training.

    Assessment and review:

    Identifying and managing health and safety risks;

    Accessing (and following) competent advice;

    Monitoring, reporting and reviewing performance.

    I think that the directors have monitored the situation and have concluded that the people in S111 have not heeded the warnings. In this primary duty, they have had no choice and their action had to be taken.

    The people who have provoked the scenario need to work with the directors towards a solution so that we can enjoy the positive atmosphere that this section generates and which enlivens the stadium.

    Exactly -you said 5/6 years ago

    Time passes people have to move on

    Frankly I thought it embarrassing when you had young? CFC supporters singing about the troubles in the north to a group of people who actually lived through it!

    The term Plastic Paddies struck me for the first time as being apt on that occasion.

    I certainly do not want to dilute our Irish origins and would probably stop going if I thought we were headed down that road.

    Interesting post. I assume that you do not join in singing ‘The Fields of Athenry’ as you weren’t born during An Gorta Mor! Frankly as a Celtic supporter who lived through the troubles in Belfast I am somewhat ambivalent to the issue of singing Reb songs at CP either from recent or long past events. Anywho as many books relating to Celtic history tell us the first none religious song sang a Celtic park was a Reb song.
