Running past Orange Walk outperforms carb loading

400

I sat in a Foundation meeting with a group of Celtic fans on Saturday, it is beyond credible what is done in our name – and there’s much more to come.

Last week the Foundation appointed a Disability Sports Ambassador, while earlier this month, we saw the opening of Celtic Park Haiti, a magnificent assistance project in one of the world’s poorest countries. In the first week of this month the Foundation made news across the globe for leading the way in their response to the refugee crisis (well, the Washington Post covered it, even if some in our own backyard didn’t).

September started with the news that CLIC Sargent’s new Home from Home in Glasgow opened with the assistance of a £60k donation of your money. CLIC offer support for families coping with child cancer.

All this, just in September!

Ambition for the Foundation is limited to the practicalities of what’s possible to deliver. To this end, several dozen of us have signed up to compete (cough) for the Foundation in the Great Scottish Run on Sunday. For most of us, it takes many months’ hard work to get to the point that you’re lining up in George Square with 10k or a half marathon ahead of you.

I’m running the half marathon, my first time at an event over 10k (only done 3 of those). It’s been a summer on the roads, the highlight of which was the fastest recorded run up Airbles Road. Running in a Celtic T-shirt through a crowd watching an Orange Walk puts more energy in the legs than any amount of carb loading.

There are lots of ways you can participate in the work:

Here, for my linked donation page.

Here for Steve Gunn’s.

Here for Thomas Eman’s.

Here for Robert Doherty’s.

Here for Stephen Hewitt’s.

Here for Kenny O’Neill’s.

If you are doing the GSR for the Foundation and would like a shout out for donations, email me, celticquicknews@gmail.com

Many thanks for your help, it’s appreciated.

  1. Afternoon all. Asked a friend – a lifelong Hammers fan – about Carlton Cole. Came the reply, “worst footballer I’ve ever seen.”

  2. If Calton Cole is our big white hope then I’m calling in Yoda for some help.

Naw! Naw! and … infinitly NAW! NAW1

Although Cole latest stint with West Ham looks similar to Dublin’s foray with Leicester. So that should perhaps be a warning.

    From today’s Herald.

A SECOND inquiry into allegations that police officers have lied on the stand in cases involving football fans is under way.

Police Scotland has confirmed it is investigating claims an officer within its dedicated football unit committed perjury in a case where two supporters were found guilty of singing offensive songs.

It followed a complaint lodged with the force by a member of the public accompanied by Labour MSP Paul Martin and centres on allegations the officer was aware evidence given in the conviction of two men that warnings had been issued to fans about certain songs was inaccurate.

Two other police officers, a chief inspector and sergeant, remain under investigation following perjury allegations in a case where a football fan was acquitted of his role in a notorious incident.

The pair had given evidence against a youth charged with breach of the peace for his role in the kettling of Celtic fans on Glasgow’s Gallowgate in March 2013.

The latest case involves Celtic supporters William Donnelly and Martin Walsh, who were charged with engaging in behaviour which was likely or would be likely to incite public disorder by singing a song in support of a proscribed terrorist organisation. The two men were given six-month football banning orders.

The “Roll of Honour” song commemorates Irish Republican hunger strikers from the Provisional IRA and Irish National Liberation Army (INLA).

It has been alleged that evidence given by an officer within the Football Coordination Unit Scotland in the initial conviction and cited in the refusal of their appeal was knowingly incorrect.

During the trial the officer had said Celtic and various supporters’ clubs had warned fans of the undesirability and dangers in singing this particular song and that the pair were therefore aware the song was banned.

But various documents dispute the claim that fans’ groups ever publicly indicated the song was sectarian or otherwise.

Celtic did have a meeting with the police where it was indicated fans would face potential arrest if they sang Roll of Honour but this was a month after the game where Mr Walsh and Mr Donnelly committed their offence.

A letter to Jeanette Findlay, a prominent member of the pressure group Fans Against Criminalisation who made the complaint to Police Scotland, states that an officer with the force’s professional standards unit has been appointed to investigate the complaint.

The complaint also follows almost seven months of attempts to have the Crown Office’s dedicated unit which examines criminal allegations against the police investigate at the claims, including direct contact between Glasgow MSP Mr Martin and Lord Advocate Frank Mulholland.

Ms Findlay said she only made the allegation in person to Police Scotland after the Crown Office “failed consistently to respond to me regarding serious allegations”.

A spokeswoman for Police Scotland said: “As this is an ongoing investigation, we are unable to comment at the present time.”

The two men involved in the case, both from Dumbarton, were prosecuted after the incident at Hibs’ Easter Road stadium in October 2013. They later took their case to the appeal court in Edinburgh, claiming their rights under the European Convention of Human Rights had been breached.

However, the Lord Justice Clerk, Lord Carloway, sitting with Lord Bracadale and Lord Boyd of Duncansby, refused the appeal earlier this year.

Except Flo signed for Rangers. That’s not really relevant to Celtic signings it it? However since you asked it seems he scored 29 in 53 appearances. Which is an improvement on what he did before with Chelsea 34 in 112.

Great so see at long last the Labour Party calling out the SNP on their 8 years of nothingness whilst holding power.

The SNP have had it within their power to plough a non austerity plan for 8 years yet education, health provision and policing are in a death spiral in Scotland.

Al they do is whine that it’s Westminster’s fault yet THEY, hold the purse string for the nation.

A fair point you make but Scotland will never amount to anything until the Scottish electorate come to their senses and elect a Scottish Conservative government to Holyrood. What we are missing up here are the good old fashioned, reliable Conservative liberal values that made Scotland a great country and the envy of the world with our ship building, coal and iron and steel industries. The decline in Conservatism in this country has mirrored the demise of these great industries.

You don’t need one! Just start some gratuitous name calling.:))

  13. TINYTIM @ 11:19 AM,

You make a fair point and a crucial one.

But for me and I welcomed the Ciftci signing, it’s a matter of context.

We had a cull of forwards, Stoksie is out of favour so that leaves us with two first team strikers at the moment.

IMO Ciftci was brought in as a back-up striker, he was half the price of the players we let go/loaned out, yet he was a proven SPFL Striker. He also fits in well with our one up front strategy.

I can only speak for myself, but suspect others that welcomed him were of the view, prevalent at the time, that we would sign a quality striker.

The fact that we didn’t means someone dropped the ball – big time.

We talk of, formats, systems, players, tactics, coaching etc, etc… to blame for our poor performances, well, that’s worth analysing.

But we had a pretty frantic transfer window at the end, we brought in some good young players, we ruthlessly thinned out the squad (easier said than done). And brought in a quality CB – we hope.

But the quality striker was a fulcrum. Failure to bring in one in was a huge mistake.

Ciftci has had little game time, is a squad player and has been playing under great pressure. We need to see his performances in that light IMO.

    Hail Hail

    Diddums. And just think.

There was a real opperchancity to put a stop to the ‘blaming westminster’ for all our woes game. But NAW. The Loyalist Royalist Unionist Tim Republicans thought that’s be a bad idea. But at least you now have the opperchancity to moan about exactly what you wanted.

Bawsman part of the problem – not the solution.

MWD said AYE bendy banana republican unionist Tims are mentalists.

Always read your posts with some fascination.

I think you win the most negative active Celtic supporter title ahead of ‘the internet negativists’, who post ad nauseum.

It must be fun sitting beside you at the game, right enough?

Not many have passed the ole Celtic trial period and Carlton Cole certainly didn’t, I’m curious as to where you find out that “he has to be convinced to sign for Celtic’?. The fact that he was considered whilst out of contract , is another matter entirely

Nadir Ciftci’s record at Dundee Utd attracted Championship interest, which roughly equates with Celtic level so does his transfer. The same could be said of Leigh Griffiths, both of them will weigh in with SPL goals given the chance, which Ciftci hasn’t really had yet, even though he scored as a sub against Dundee.

The loss despite the ‘buy cheap sell on’ policy, is presently £4million, I log on in vain most days to see if a supporter has found the solutions.

This is where we’ve been for some time and you’ll still buy tickets, and turn up,

    Hail Hail

Well I suppose if you look at the blinding success of the previous Labour Governments under Blair and Brown, you have a perfectly sound argument. Then we have the present mob who voted with the Tories on the “Austerity cuts”.Dont think anyone of an SNP persuasion will be taking heed of anyone associated with Labour trying to talk them down. The last debate on “The living wage”in Parliament, had 56 SNP,6 Tory, and 8 Labour in attendance. They shame a once great party.
