Russia and Ukraine on track for 2015 Joint Championship

950

The organising committee of the proposed Joint Russian and Ukrainian championship have confirmed that the Russian Premier League have voted in favour of the proposal.  The matter will now go to the Russian Association and the corresponding authorities in Ukraine.

Valery Gazzaev, president of Russian club, Alania Vladikavkaz, told reporters, “Innovation is never easy, even the World Cup and European Championships had doubters in the game.  The English, who founded the game, were sceptical about such championships.

“We have had the same doubts about our project but in football, a policy of integration is now necessary.  Look at the European Championship in 2020, which will be held across 13 countries.

“Given the economic crisis in Europe few territories can afford to maintain a competitive team.  If we draw a combined championship with Russia and Ukraine we will improve entertainment, as well as football and financial stability.

“Half of Russian clubs are unprofitable (a considerably lower portion than UK clubs), 70% are subsidised by governmental budgets, this is wrong.  A Joint League will enable teams to earn money to pay their own way.

“We want to create a strong league which will compete with the best in Europe.

“The plan is to hold the first joint championship in 2015-16.  Teams will compete in European competitions under their national flags.  The national quotas for participation in the tournament will remain the same, so if ranking does not change, Russia and Ukraine will be represented in the Champions League by six teams.

“Our proposal is fully consistent with Uefa strategy.  Uefa understand that, under the current league structures, Financial Fair Plan will weaken our clubs.  A combined championship gives us a solution.

“Part of the budget for the new league will come from the sale of media rights.  The remaining amount will be generated from sponsors.  It’s not just about Gazprom, other major Russian, Ukrainian and international companies will be involved (no mention of Flamingo Land yet).”

Make no mistake, this project’s viability is underwritten by political and financial muscle.  Gazprom are a huge player in world energy markets, as well as European football sponsorship, while politicians in Moscow and Kiev see football as a ‘political football’.

They have the money and backers to ensure this slips through Uefa, creating an important blueprint in the process.  Note specifically that Champions League spots will be retained by each nation, a hugely important point for integration elsewhere.

Im raging at the way you have been treated, clearly you have touched the same raw nerve I did when i wrote to PL on this, they want to ignore it hope it goes away and distract the support by focusing on the CL, keep going at it , we are no more having a say in the club now as we did under the Whytes and Kellys.

  3. Now I think we have a blueprint for a British Premier League, two Divisions with say six teams from Scotland.

It could be implemented at the end of the season the demoted Clubs from the Barclays Premier are replaced from the two top English Champions league clubs and the top Scottish Club.

The British Premiership Division Two Will be made up of the three demoted the 2nd – 6th placed Teams from the SPL and the 3rd to 12th placed English champions League clubs.

    Voila!!!

They could even restructure the Welsh Clubs and bring their UCL place into the BPL.

Ultimately, it is for the National Associations, via their FIFA mandate, to foster and promote the game in their jurisdiction as they see fit. If the Russian and Ukrainian (or any other group of) FAs elect to create a top league between them, it’s essentially their call.

UEFA’s beef is in ensuring cross-border competition doesn’t impact on their own trans-European monopoly.

Their practical challenge though is to facilitate a bulwark to the strength of England and Germany, Italy and Spain, without providing the big boys with a licence to create their own competitions.

It would be rather difficult for UEFA to prevent for example Barca and Real from joining up with the top Italian and French teams if the Russians and Ukrainians (or indeed Dutch and Belgians) had set a valid precedent.

A few folk may recall from some time ago the idea of the “Espanyolification” of Rangers. These days, the talk in Spain is of the “SPLification” of La Liga, where only two teams now have the resources to win. (News of the demise of Celtic’s sole competitor notwithstanding)

Be interesting to watch as matters develop (or not).

  11. Ying and Yang: Celtic,Me and the Scottish League Cup

During my weekly, weekend-walk with my Granda (mid 90’s) around the lost villages between Airdrie and Plains he came out with it. The phrase I thought of on Tuesday night; the phrase that sums up everything I’ve experienced since my first game: Celtic v Airdrie 1975 Cup Final till my latest, our exit from the League Cup at the hands or should that be the feet of Morton.

I’d been walking those roads and field with him since I was a toddler. This was my Celtic University, it was all he talked about. I listened intently and questioned when I could. McGrory, Stein, Tully, Peacock, Murdoch (his favourite), Lennox and Jinky. It was magical but as this was the 90’s, I often felt a tinge of jealousy and resentment that my current heroes wouldn’t be remembered with the same reverence…apart from the Maestro of course.

It was the week after Raith Rovers.

Old Paddy said and I paraphrase: “You made the right choice supporting Celtic-as if I had a choice-but you need to know there will be real highs and real lows…” It was only a week after Raith Rovers this particular low was still eating away.

I’ve often thought of his wise words and I wondered what he’d be saying this week. Firstly it would be enjoy the good times; then it would be that we are Champions and Barcelona et al are due to visit; he’d have a devilish dig at the turbulence in Govan and then he tell me that he told me so. This is the Celtic way and the League Cup encompasses this for me.

I wasn’t around in 1957, my parents got my year of birth perfectly aligned with Celtic folklore, but Paddy spoke about that final with a warmth that must have matched the sun beating down in Hampden on that famous day. We actually defeated Partick Thistle the year before after a reply but nobody remembers that Thistle League Cup Final. Rangers made us pay for our legendary win with numerous victories over us in League Cup Finals. I’ve experienced horrible days at Hampden as they collect the first trophy of the season and end hope yet again of a treble.

My ’57 moment was a much narrower victory. 2-1 to us with Champagne Charlie and Murdo firing us to a much deserved victory. Jim Bett scored for them ensuring a tortuous, nervous finale but we won. We were drowned by the torrential rain and our songs of celebration drifted into the Mt. Florida air as the blue battalions belted out their bigotry, aided and abetted by their roof. More defeats from them would follow though and it seemed this was a cup we just didn’t want to win.

We could find a way to lose we hadn’t thought of before. As I sat in the back row of the ‘Broomloan’ in 1994 watching my hero walk towards the penalty spot, I knew he was going to miss, I hurriedly tried to make the exit. Paddy’s word echoed in my ears.

We’d return to the same venue under Wim and destroy Dundee Utd with a swashbuckling performance led by our Swedish hero. Ying and Yang.

These are personal memories and don’t incorporate all the league cup matches I’ve attended. We’ve played in 29 League Cup finals, winning 14 and losing 15. Ying and Yang.

Of course Paddy was right, supporting Celtic was the ‘right choice’ and the good times for this happy clapper always outweigh the bad but the League Cup has had a real go at balancing things.

    Well done Morton.

    Hail Hail

Thanks for the reminder, and St Stives is bang on the money, I knew he was but a bevied jack and danny is a fool for himself, need to screw the bobbin time, there’s lots of twists n turns to come, I’m actually surprised there was not a strategy already in place to deal with us, seems a bit rough on Morissey to be turned away like that, I mean it costs nothing to be civil especially when it’s your own bread and butter your dealing with.

If Celtic decide to announce the AGM on a date less than six weeks from when I handed in the resolutions, the can try and use this as an excuse for not accepting the resolution.

They did try and refuse to take them from me on Tuesday. I insisted on being given a receipt, which I was eventually given, although I refused to take it until it was dated correctly. It was originally dated for Wednesday.

I spoke to the lawyer for Celtic who is dealing with this issue on Wednesday. He said we may have missed the six week deadline as the AGM may be on the 3rd of November. Not only would that be wrong as it would be within the six weeks but I doubt the AGM would be on a Sunday.

He told me he would call me back yesterday but as you know from Canamalars post. That did not happen and it seems we are being blackballed.

    tttt,

I’m a newbie to all this so no sure what grounds they can use to reject, I’ve asked around and taken a few legal opinions and suggestions who think there is no real legal grounds for rejection. So we’ll just have to wait and see.

I’ve already predicted they will simply call the AGM early and that’s grounds under time limitations but they know we’ll simply come back at them next year, obviously to me anyway, anyone supporting this will have no problem resigning a redrafted resolution if it needs done, and getting it in for Christmass so in plenty of time for the next one.

As I say it’s now the waiting game

I did say to the Celtic’s lawyer that the six week rule did not mean it could not be included in the AGM and it would reflect badly on Celtic to their support and share-holders if this was used to prevent the resolution being tabled. He agreed on principle that Celtic could accommodate it but that was not a decision he could make. That would be up to the board.

He promised call me back but as you now know. That did not happened. Although security were told not to allow me to return.
