Russia and Ukraine on track for 2015 Joint Championship

950

The organising committee of the proposed Joint Russian and Ukrainian championship have confirmed that the Russian Premier League have voted in favour of the proposal.  The matter will now go to the Russian Association and the corresponding authorities in Ukraine.

Valery Gazzaev, president of Russian club, Alania Vladikavkaz, told reporters, “Innovation is never easy, even the World Cup and European Championships had doubters in the game.  The English, who founded the game, were sceptical about such championships.

“We have had the same doubts about our project but in football, a policy of integration is now necessary.  Look at the European Championship in 2020, which will be held across 13 countries.

“Given the economic crisis in Europe few territories can afford to maintain a competitive team.  If we draw a combined championship with Russia and Ukraine we will improve entertainment, as well as football and financial stability.

“Half of Russian clubs are unprofitable (a considerably lower portion than UK clubs), 70% are subsidised by governmental budgets, this is wrong.  A Joint League will enable teams to earn money to pay their own way.

“We want to create a strong league which will compete with the best in Europe.

“The plan is to hold the first joint championship in 2015-16.  Teams will compete in European competitions under their national flags.  The national quotas for participation in the tournament will remain the same, so if ranking does not change, Russia and Ukraine will be represented in the Champions League by six teams.

“Our proposal is fully consistent with Uefa strategy.  Uefa understand that, under the current league structures, Financial Fair Plan will weaken our clubs.  A combined championship gives us a solution.

“Part of the budget for the new league will come from the sale of media rights.  The remaining amount will be generated from sponsors.  It’s not just about Gazprom, other major Russian, Ukrainian and international companies will be involved (no mention of Flamingo Land yet).”

Make no mistake, this project’s viability is underwritten by political and financial muscle.  Gazprom are a huge player in world energy markets, as well as European football sponsorship, while politicians in Moscow and Kiev see football as a ‘political football’.

They have the money and backers to ensure this slips through Uefa, creating an important blueprint in the process.  Note specifically that Champions League spots will be retained by each nation, a hugely important point for integration elsewhere.

  1. The Day I Realised Football Went Mad Part 1-

The day i seen Lee Naylor drive out the CP Car Park in a brand new Lambourghini.

  2. If this Russian initiative goes through, why does everyone assume it gives the green light to the Spanish and Portuguese joining one another? Or the Germans and Austrians?

Much more likely the Spanish and Italians would like to amalgamate. Or the Italians and Germans…

If UEFA accept this they will effectively dismantle their own governance of European football. Cannot see it happening, regardless of Gazprom’s clout.

However, it seems increasingly likely there will be a reorganisation of European football at some point, as clubs in the big leagues (Germany apart) sink into financial difficulty. Impossible to say whether this would benefit us or not.

One point from Paul’s article… is that Russian bloke saying the majority of Russian clubs get state aid? Isn’t that illegal under UEFA rules?

  3. Just in to say….

But – I speak for myself here – I think that the ‘cold-turkey’ route

is / would be the best way to deal with this ‘bored’….that is

would have to take place before the start of the season…a notice

of intent sent to the ‘bored’ Celts For Change style…the notice / message

would be along the lines of – “NO SB’s will be purchased till your gone !!!”

Celtic will NEVER be Celtic till it belongs to the fans.

By my reckoning – THAT has never been the case.

Fergus said that the fans would be in control of the club when he left.

Has that been the case ?

Having said all of that – getting rid of the seats and getting the terracings

back would be a good move but, must not be allowed to become another decoy.

  5. Outrageous behavior from Celtic PLC. Someone from the PLC needs to address this immediately and explain why share holders are being treated with such disdain. Someone should remind them “the support are the club”

I am sure that most of the Celtic support are fully behind you and Morrissey 23. Someone should remind them “the support are the club” they need to act or see the discontent grow and fester into open animosity unless the PLC are seen to react to the wishes of Celtic shareholders.

Perhaps Paul67 can use some of his contacts within Celtic to get an answer.

  6. The Honest Mistake loves being first on

Disappointing behaviour from those at Celtic who choose to ignore an issue that Celtic fans and shareholders feel so strongly about.

Starting to take on a sinister twist.

  7. The Battered Bunnet@11:24

    “SFTB will pleased”

Only because it is another breach in the dam. By itself, this will not bring about our desired change of league climate easily or soon. However, it will weaken the strenght of the argument of those who say this is “pie in the sky”, “will/can never happen”, or “they don’t want us”.

The current CL model is seeing, for the first time ever in European football history, The “SPLification” of all senior leagues.

    For Celtic/Rangers read:-

EPL- Man U Chelsea Man City & A.N. other from Arsenal/Spurs/Liverpool

    La Liga- Barca or Real

SerieA- Inter or Juve or AC plus A.N. other

    Bundesliga- Bayern or Dortmund

    Ligue 1- PSG or ???

This contraction of title winning potential will leave all clubs dissatisfied and broke. The elite clubs above are heading for financial chaos because of the core costs of having to buy all the emerging elite players.

The remaining 80% plus of the teams in their leagues are having to stretch themselves financially to avoid falling off the gravy train and losing their historical importance (Wolves, Sheffield clubs etc:). Lots of the smaller ambitious clubs overstretch in trying to get to the Senior Level.

UEFA must fear the breaches and contradictions involved in loosening their grip on cross-border leagues. Their paramount position is to preserve the primacy of International football against the conflicting demands of CL elite clubs. They will do anything to keep the elite 14 or 20 clubs from doing a Kerry Packer with Sky or some other maverick.

Once UEFA decide to harmonise year long cross border competitions, we need to be in a position to get one of the spots available. We are unlikely to be offered a top division spot but you never know.

I agree that the EPL and Bundesliga are feeling less pressure to admit outsiders than are, perhaps, La Liga, but national jealousies will still be a strong resistance factor in all moves. that just means slower negotiation.

In short, I don’t believe the Russia/Ukraine initiative will give us an opportunity to move soon. However, I remain of the opinion that National League Structures will alter to reflect modern reality and that UEFA will make some offer to control this. When that happens, it will happen quickly.

Meanwhile, we save some money so that we are in a position to be more competitive when it will make a difference.

Paper apologises to Celtic football fans over ‘illegal march’ story

The Herald, the Glasgow-based daily, has been forced to apologise after falsely reporting that Celtic football fans staged an “unauthorised” and “illegal” march through the city in April.

The paper’s original story, “Football fans protest over crackdown on hate crime”, claimed that “more than 2,000” fans had staged “an unauthorised march.”

In fact, the fans were dispersing in large numbers from a rally held in the city centre, at George Square, to highlight supporters’ opposition to interpretations of a new Scottish law – the offensive behaviour at football and threatening communications act.

It gives police and prosecutors powers to tackle sectarian songs and abuse at and around football matches, as well as threats posted on the internet or through the mail. Some Celtic fans believe it criminalises them.

Following The Herald’s article about the “illegal” march, a formal complaint was made to the Press Complaints Commission (PCC) by Stewart Moore.

He argued that the article was inaccurate and misleading, and therefore in breach of the editors’ code of practice.

The Herald conceded that it had breached the clause relating to accuracy after the police confirmed that they were satisfied by the manner in which fans had left the square.

The PCC then resolved the complaint with the paper, which agreed to amend its online article and publish a correction. It said:

“Our article… stated that after the conclusion of a rally in George Square, Celtic fans staged an ‘unauthorised march’ through Glasgow. This was based on a prior police warning to fans ‘that any procession along the road from George Square would be illegal and anyone involved could find themselves subject to prosecution’.

We are happy to make clear that police were satisfied with the manner in which fans dispersed from George Square.”

MEMO to The Herald (and the PCC): The online article was supposed to have been amended, but not according to the version I just called up, via Google. And, once amended, should it not point out to readers that it has been changed?
