Russia, Ukraine clubs called to Joint Championship meeting

972

A group of Russian and Ukrainian clubs hoping to form a joint championship have formed an organising committee and have invited top flight clubs in both countries to a meeting in Moscow on 18th of February to formalise arrangements.

The invitation letter states, “The main goal of our organization is the development of club, national and European football”

“In order to bring football to a new level, we propose to combine multiple national championships in one tournament.  Initially Ukraine and Russia will be involved but in order to develop the strength of our game, the league could be extended to all former-Soviet countries.

“We are convinced that this new championship will be a model for other territories; this integration process is the future of football.

“This initiative will create healthy competition, increase entertainment game and increasing revenues from television broadcasts and advertising – just some of the benefits of unification.

“All of this will allow individual clubs to benefit as well as national teams, who will gain from players working in a higher standard of league.  This is perhaps a unique case in sport where all participants are able to win.

Soviet Sport spoke to several Russian teams who confirmed they will attend.  Sergei Palkin, the chief executive of Shakhtar Donetsk, was cautious, suggesting Ukrainian clubs and the Federation need to act with unity, “I hope this meeting takes place but only after Ukrainian clubs have chosen a common position.

“Then we can decide who should attend.  The Football Federation of Ukraine need to be active, they can unite clubs and deal with the proposal appropriately.”

Note their points:

“Main goal… development of club, national and European football”.

“Bring football to a new level”.

“Develop the strength of our game”.

“This integration process is the future of football”.

“This will allow individual clubs to benefit as well as national teams”.

“Create healthy competition, increase entertainment game and increasing revenues from television broadcasts and advertising”.

Amid all the talk about reorganising our game has anyone had the clarity of vision to articulate the above aspirations?  Having lived with threats from “the big five” leagues for long enough other demographically-challenged countries are putting plans in place to allow their clubs a sporting chance.  It will soon be “the big six” and thereafter, who knows?

Why on earth are we worried about the number of lower divisions we have?  Regionalise or wither on the vine – and do your best to ignore any muppet who suggests taking legal action because he got his sums wrong.  The only change worth having will be consensual and will benefit all in our game.

Paul67 – change was never going to come from within, we’ve always been hopelessly dependant on the re-construction of European football. The self-serving pygmies running the game in this country can’t see beyond 10, 12 or 14 team leagues.

The Atlantic League idea was the subject of much ridicule, but the clubs involved should have combined to form a pressure group to agitate for change. Hopefully, we’ll soon be hearing of other league integration proposals to add to the “Soviet Bloc”.

BTW what was RC Ogilvie’s response when he was last questioned on this subject?!

    Couple of points Paul:

First up, Russia is the largest nation in Europe. Their problems are rooted in lagged economic growth, not population figures. Adding Ukraine to Russia’s 150 million of course increases the consumer population, but they are not creating a consumer market the equivalent of any of the big leagues, and are thus unlikely to find a considerably enhanced TV deal on the back of it, not for some time anyway. The ‘CIS League’ is addressing different challenges to those we face in North West Europe.

Second, MacLean’s opinion on Football v Competition Law is by no means barking. There is an argument at Law there as far as I can determine (not far…). The issue, as you point out, is what other arguments might ensue from making that one at Law?

I’m sure Brawler Green won’t be slow to find them mind you…

They have not left this season.

If we are competing regulalry in the latter stages of the Champions League players will come and they will stay.

If we lose players we lose them. We always have anyway. We replace and rebuild.

Celtic have the infrastructre to keep this current good form in Europe going. Champions League is where it’s at. We need to remain in a strong position in the competition for the next 5-10 years and players will come.

ALL players worldwide want to play in this tournament. That gives us a massive bargaining chip to bring players in and keep them.

  5. A Ceiler Gonof Rust, you would hope, but will it?

    Nuclear Bovril, it is.

    TTTT, aye.

Battered Bunnet, this is the way forward for the CIS states, despite their different issues. Legal action could easily consume the oxygen needed to agree change.

  6. The fact that it takes me 776 steps from my front door to the club for a pint of ice cold, delicious Budweiser, and, 1184 steps back tells me that 12 steps too sobriety will be a dawdle if ever I decide to hang up my lager diviners. So whits aw the fuss aboot?

  7. The formation of various regional leagues in Europe is the next step to a European Super League, which will happen in the not too distant future.

There are currently about 50 national leagues under the UEFA umbrella – and these will probably always exist – but in years to come they will almost certainly become nothing more than feeders to a pan-European League set-up.

A giant pyramid system in other words.

Where do Celtic fit into all this?

With our global fanbase and illustrious history I would like to think at or near the top of this pyramid!

  17. I see Juventus are wising up re the Celtic game. I actually would like to put Scott Brown on Pirlo full time, and see how he likes it. Not the Mensing full time job, where you kick it if it moves a la Scottish marking, but rather the within 1/2 feet of the player every time. I think it would work, but then NL and the team will have their plans re Mr Pirlo already worked out. I’ll actually be watching the Scotland game tonight. I’m sure the hacks are as well, looking for the smallest slip-up from WGS.

  19. I believe the best new league for Celtic and Scotland would be for us to join with England in a UK and Ireland League structure, I would hope they would find a way for the likes of Aberdeen, Dundee Utd and Irish teams etc to join it.

I feel it would be more of a natural fit for all. I believe that the EPL/Football league would consider this, if other amalgamated leagues where to be setting up, as a way of reinvigorating their present set up to compete with new Leagues in the battle for TV/Internet/Sponsorship Money.
