Russians step up regionalisation, don’t fancy Norwich chances

368

Can you imagine offering £5m for the first-choice striker at any team on the Champions League knock out rounds?  I’m less concerned about the forthcoming Juventus game, which will take care of itself, but Celtic hope to have three Champions League qualifier rounds in July and August.  Many highly sought-after players don’t move until late in the transfer window, so the squad we finish the season with will, for the most part, be the squad we start that qualifiers with.

Asset management has been the mantra on CQN for years but when the value of the asset doesn’t peak above even the short-term value on the field we are better to allow a contract to expire than sell early.  In short, I don’t fancy Norwich’s chances of acquiring some under-priced talent, no matter how keen others are to make a deal happen.

Russian sports minister, Vitaly Mutko, told journalists he was working on the CIS League project, which initially sought to combine Russian and Ukrainian leagues, but may also include others.  Uefa are thought to be supportive of the deal while Fifa president, Sepp Blatter, sought to under-play it when in Russia this week.  The regionalisation of European leagues is the way forward for clubs disenfranchised by powerful TV markets.

Mutko, a former Zenit director, is one of Russia’s ‘colourful’ characters, but he is organised, ambitious and well-connected at Uefa.

Kilmarnock have long endured life with the highest debt-to-turnover ratio in the SPL but they have managed to pay their bills when due, until now.  News that a food supplier has taken legal action over a £16k debt is not surprising.  These are hard times for many people but when you have not, or cannot, pay a debt, at least be gracious about it.  Suggesting your creditor is seeking publicity by raising the action is very poor form.

Ironically, if there is one club in the whole of Europe who would benefit from regionalisation it’s Kilmarnock, who are stuck in an impoverished league with their remarkable infrastructure.  If only they had some vision at the top….

Looking forward to the visit of United tonight; the two most skillful teams in Scotland on show.

I was thinking the same thing this morning. There hasn’t been a single share bought since the 11th Jan.

As soon as the market makers funds run out, that price will drop like a stone.

  3. The Honest Cover-up on

There should be no place in the SPL for teams who are run irresponsibly and run up ridiculous levels of debt. If Kilmarnock come out of administration and sort their act out then fair enough. Otherwise we’ll do without them. Give me a well run Falkirk or Partick Thistle over that mob any day. Maybe Michael Johnston will get to see his beloved Sevco in the league sooner than he feared. It would be fascinating to see if the authorites were as accomodating to a brand new Kilmarnock club as they were to Rangers 2012.

Incidently, what on earth was Danny Wilson doing playing for Hearts the other day. I thought they were struggling to pay wages of their current team and were being issued with winding up threats, yet they are adding to their squad. Unless it’s a free loan with Liverpool picking up all the wages (which I doubt) then it’s a ridiculous situation.

Looking forward to tonight and seeing Mackay Steven and Johnny Russell. I really hope we have asked to be kept informed of any interest in these boys.

Do you think (as I do) that the institutional investors have a lock-in, say 3 months? I can’t understand why other than that 2x400k sales we haven’t seen profit taking on a larger scale, and it’s the only thing I can think of. At this rate, they’ll be hitting losses before they can sell.

  6. The Honest Cover-up@13:08

Hearts transfer embargo was lifted last week with the proviso that it is a 1 out 1 in deal. The player coming in must be under 21 and on less wages than the player leaving the club. Hearts have lost Enckleman + Ryan McGowan so even with the addition of Wilson, are still allowed to add 1 more player.

Incidentally, Liverpool are indeed covering 90% of Wilson’s wages. He is out of contract in the summer and they want rid of him.

I relise there was that proviso but even with losing 2 players they sould not be adding to their squad at the moment. We’ve been told that the club is in grave danger, adding Danny Wilson’s 10% won’t help the creditors who are going to lose out. They sould be squeezing out goings in all directions.

  13. weeminger@13:12

It’s a strange one. Agree that there must be some sort of lock-in but with the price edging downwards every other day, they aren’t going to exactly make a killing.

Or, has Crazy Chuck been telling porkies regards league reconstruction to them in order to make the share issue a ‘goer’. Now that he has done that, does he really give a monkeys what happens to them seeing as he bought all his shares at a 1p, and stands to be quids in even if there is a collapse?

Where would you place Gary Hooper in a list of post-war Celtic strikers?

I know where you’re coming from but as far as i’m aware Hearts are up to date with payments to players including bonuses etc. If the SFA kept up the embargo of no transfers whatsoever, could Hearts not argue a ‘restraint of trade’?

They normally get paid on the 18th or thereabouts of every month. Now imagine if Hearts are late this month with player salaries or any bonus payments?

Daily Record – Sevco have turned down a £20m offer from big-spending Manchester City for wonder-kid Kyle MacKyle.

  21. The Battered Bunnet on

The town of Kilmarnock has a population of around 44,734 people.

If each of them were to give their home town football club £219 the club’s debt could be settled, although it ought to be pointed out that those who are below working age, retired or unemployed may struggle to post the dough.

1.3% of the town’s population is housed in Kilmarnock Prison, accommodating an adult, all-male, football-inclined demographic that the football club’s marketing department has hitherto overlooked.

Kilmarnock’s Rugby Park ground has a capacity of 18,128 spectators, equivalent to 42% of the town’s population. Clearly when drawing up plans to redevelop the ground 20 years ago, the Directors of the club foresaw the dramatic expansion of football as a spectator sport.

It is not recorded how many of the Directors responsible for the building of the new Rugby Park were members of the local Dick Institute.

Other similarly sized Scottish towns are noted below:

Dunfermline 55,083 Football Ground capacity 11,380

Greenock 55,013 Football Ground capacity 11,100

Hamilton 49,999 Football Ground capacity 6,078

Cumbernauld 48,762 Football Ground capacity 8,029

Ayr 47,962 Football Ground capacity 10,185

Kirkcaldy 47,155 Football Ground capacity 10,104

Coatbridge 43,617 Football Ground capacity 2,496

Livingston 41,647 Football Ground capacity 10,122

Perth 41,453 Football Ground capacity 10,673

Inverness 41,234 Football Ground capacity 7,918

Kilmarnock FC attracts an average home gate of 5,537, equating to an occupancy of 30% of available seats. Given this figure, and accounting for additional capacity for higher profile matches, set within the context of the figures for stadium capacity at towns of equivalent size noted above, a stadium with a capacity in the order of 10,000 would be ideal for Kilmarnock FC.

Such a stadium would have reduced Rugby Park development costs and corollary long term debt by around £6M – 60%. Regrettably, it is now too late to send the seats back to the supplier.

Unfailingly entrepreneurial, the Kilmarnock FC directors offer the stadium as a set for film production. The 1999 film A Shot At glory, directed by Hollywood legend Robert Duvall, used Rugby Park for this purpose. Starring movie debutant and pastry aficionado Alastair McCoist, the film cost $9 Million to produce, returning just $133,349 at the box office.

The Park Hotel, Kilmarnock, is situated on the Rugby Park site, and built at considerable expense on the club’s former training ground. It is currently offering Festive Dinner deals, Party Nights, Christmas Panto specials and Wine and Dine packages for last month’s Kilmarnock v Celtic match. On balance, one wonders if it would be a more successful venue as a training pitch.

As part of the deal with the nominated advisor (Cenkos), RIFC will have set aside a fund from which Cenkos’s brokers will buy up any shares which are available on the market.

This creates a ‘demand’ for the shares and keeps the price artificially high. When this fund runs dry, then watch for a massive drop in price.

The question is whether Crazy Chuck has given them enough to keep the price at a high point, so he can personally cash in when his ‘lock-in’ expires.

Must be honest and say that Rugby Park is one of my favourite away grounds in Scotland – was first taken there in the early 60s to see the hoops, and I remember being there in 1965(?) for Kilmarnock v Real Madrid in the old European Cup. Finished 2-2. Real p*mped them 5-1 in the return!

Was last there in April for the 6-0 SPL clincher game – the atmosphere that day was one of the best I have witnessed in an away game in Scotland in 50 years of following the hoops! The attendance that day was c15,500, including 13,000 Celtic fans – the support Kilmarnock get is woeful!

I meant more from a moral point of view rather than that they shouldn’t be allowed to. I agree it shouldn’t be the job of the authorities to keep track of every club’s repayment plans and determine who should be allowed to sign players. That should be the job of the clubs themselves. Hearts should not be adding to their wage bill (even if it is going down overall) if they were talking about going out of business just a couple of months ago. Didn’t explain myself very well.
