Russians step up regionalisation, don’t fancy Norwich chances

368

Can you imagine offering £5m for the first-choice striker at any team on the Champions League knock out rounds?  I’m less concerned about the forthcoming Juventus game, which will take care of itself, but Celtic hope to have three Champions League qualifier rounds in July and August.  Many highly sought-after players don’t move until late in the transfer window, so the squad we finish the season with will, for the most part, be the squad we start that qualifiers with.

Asset management has been the mantra on CQN for years but when the value of the asset doesn’t peak above even the short-term value on the field we are better to allow a contract to expire than sell early.  In short, I don’t fancy Norwich’s chances of acquiring some under-priced talent, no matter how keen others are to make a deal happen.

Russian sports minister, Vitaly Mutko, told journalists he was working on the CIS League project, which initially sought to combine Russian and Ukrainian leagues, but may also include others.  Uefa are thought to be supportive of the deal while Fifa president, Sepp Blatter, sought to under-play it when in Russia this week.  The regionalisation of European leagues is the way forward for clubs disenfranchised by powerful TV markets.

Mutko, a former Zenit director, is one of Russia’s ‘colourful’ characters, but he is organised, ambitious and well-connected at Uefa.

Kilmarnock have long endured life with the highest debt-to-turnover ratio in the SPL but they have managed to pay their bills when due, until now.  News that a food supplier has taken legal action over a £16k debt is not surprising.  These are hard times for many people but when you have not, or cannot, pay a debt, at least be gracious about it.  Suggesting your creditor is seeking publicity by raising the action is very poor form.

Ironically, if there is one club in the whole of Europe who would benefit from regionalisation it’s Kilmarnock, who are stuck in an impoverished league with their remarkable infrastructure.  If only they had some vision at the top….

Looking forward to the visit of United tonight; the two most skillful teams in Scotland on show.

Tottenham are reportedly sizing up a £10million punt on Celtic contract rebel Gary Hooper – who they rejected as a schoolboy.

The prolific Bhoys striker is looking for more money from Celtic, not getting the right answer, and Spurs have joined the pack of Premier League clubs sniffing around, according to a report in the Metro newspaper.

Hooper is already being pursued by Norwich – who saw a £5million bid rebuffed at the weekend – and the likes of Liverpool and QPR have been mentioned.

The Metro report claims sources in Scotland say that Andre Villas-Boas has sent scouts to run the rule over the 24-year-old ace and had some encouraging reports back.

Celtic are likely to be looking for something in the region of £10million, with Metro reporting that Hooper’s former club Scunthorpe negotiated a lumpy sell-on clause when the player went north of the border.

A return to White Hart Lane could be top of Hooper’s favoured outcomes – he was snubbed by the North London side as a schoolboy, according to reports.

In 2010 – after he had joined Celtic from Scunthorpe – Hooper reportedly told the Scottish Sun newspaper: “I was released by Spurs when I was 14, I had been with them for seven years. I went on a 20-minute trial – just 20 minutes of one game and they said no.

“How they can judge you on 20 minutes I’ll never know.

“The rejection from Tottenham has motivated me a lot. I want to prove to them I can play at the highest level.

“The disappointment of being released by Spurs has never left me – and ever since I’ve been trying my hardest to show what I can do. Spurs didn’t believe in me and I think I’ve proved them wrong by joining Celtic.”

  6. Speaking of trialists, did we not have Guardiola at Barrowfield when MON was manager?

I wondered where he got his football education!

  12. Just done Celtic questionaire thingy.

It has the “options” box as to what will influence you in buying

    a season ticket next season.

I was at Broomfield the day Cascarino scored a hat trick.

Got him in the sweep. Ran another sweep on the bus and got Celtic 9 again. Big man ran riot that day and scored 3 and could have had another 3. He had finally clicked.

He ran off the pitch after a ball and clattered a police women who had to be carried round the track. She never worked again and big Cascarino went back to being poor.

The big man had no luck at Paradise.

I won £40 on the bus sweeps that day. My season ticket cost around £50 for the season in those days! I was a millionaire!

Ah – the ole 1986 Skol Cup final – I’m sure that was the day we were cruising to victory (an extremely comfortable 1-0 lead) when Big Billy took off Paul McStay, resulting in three tactical changes, and … the rest is history.

LiviBhoy – In a fit of rage, I smashed my National Health specs to bits right after Judas got sent off! Or maybe it was when Butcher dived for the winning penalty….the mind plays tricks.

Either way, that game was the start of their MIB-assisted dominance of Scottish football.

27 years later, Judas is an ex-Rankers player who’s hated by both sides and that mob are deid. Funny how things turn out!

I was only 8 and don’t remember much about the match except the McClair goal and the winner. I think it was in extra time.

The weather was awful and I got lifted over the turnstile. Hampden was a place that could look beautiful in the sun but god damn awful in the wet weather.

    – any help given to The Rangers to ascend to the top tier will see me cancel my SB immediately

    – already peed off that The Rangers were allowed into SFL without meeting criteria of 3 Years audited accounts ahead of other teams who qualify

I still remember the ’86 LC Final well.

Wee Judas got a red card and blessed himself walking off the park. Syme got hit by coins due to his MIB goldstar performance. Huns got a penalty for Butcher dragging Aitken to the deck.

After the game Davie Hay said it was about time Celtic moved to another league due to the referee bias against us.

    How times change eh? ;)
