Russians step up regionalisation, don’t fancy Norwich chances

368

Can you imagine offering £5m for the first-choice striker at any team on the Champions League knock out rounds?  I’m less concerned about the forthcoming Juventus game, which will take care of itself, but Celtic hope to have three Champions League qualifier rounds in July and August.  Many highly sought-after players don’t move until late in the transfer window, so the squad we finish the season with will, for the most part, be the squad we start that qualifiers with.

Asset management has been the mantra on CQN for years but when the value of the asset doesn’t peak above even the short-term value on the field we are better to allow a contract to expire than sell early.  In short, I don’t fancy Norwich’s chances of acquiring some under-priced talent, no matter how keen others are to make a deal happen.

Russian sports minister, Vitaly Mutko, told journalists he was working on the CIS League project, which initially sought to combine Russian and Ukrainian leagues, but may also include others.  Uefa are thought to be supportive of the deal while Fifa president, Sepp Blatter, sought to under-play it when in Russia this week.  The regionalisation of European leagues is the way forward for clubs disenfranchised by powerful TV markets.

Mutko, a former Zenit director, is one of Russia’s ‘colourful’ characters, but he is organised, ambitious and well-connected at Uefa.

Kilmarnock have long endured life with the highest debt-to-turnover ratio in the SPL but they have managed to pay their bills when due, until now.  News that a food supplier has taken legal action over a £16k debt is not surprising.  These are hard times for many people but when you have not, or cannot, pay a debt, at least be gracious about it.  Suggesting your creditor is seeking publicity by raising the action is very poor form.

Ironically, if there is one club in the whole of Europe who would benefit from regionalisation it’s Kilmarnock, who are stuck in an impoverished league with their remarkable infrastructure.  If only they had some vision at the top….

Looking forward to the visit of United tonight; the two most skillful teams in Scotland on show.

Remember David Fernandez coming on as a sub a number of years ago, and being replaced shortly thereafter by MON.

    Cant remember the game exactly.

1986 cup final….seem to remember someone scaling the old floodlight pylon at half time, when they came down, they jumped in amongst the support and were shielded away from the polis. Anyone else have this memory or is my mind playing tricks?

Was the aforementioned le petit merde sent off this day also?

agree LB, excellent goal from choccy.

Are your boys students? I was over 16 when a season started due to my birthday falling in March and wasn’t eligible for a child season ticket after Fergus came to Celtic I didn’t qualify by a matter of months but was still at school.

My mum who is not a football fan wrote to Fergus McCann to complain and said I had two paper jobs in order to afford a season ticket and my transport on the supporters bus from Livingston. She also stated that I had a season ticket through tough times for the club and I was Celtic daft much to her dissapointment as she wished I put more effort into my studies. She feared I would leave school to work in order to afford an adult ticket and she wanted me to do my highers.

My dad thought she was off her heid! The man is too busy buying Celtic and sorting out finances, stadium, contracts, players, etc to read and reply to a letter from a season ticket holders maw!

A few weeks after she sent the letter she got a hand written letter from Fergus himself. I was allowed to get a child ticket only if I was staying on at school and she was to provide a letter to him to support the fact that I had stayed on to do my highers.

I was a big supporter of McCann after that. My mum was well chuffed and she got me to stay at school another year. Wish I could find that letter though. I’m sure I have it somewhere.

Moral of the story is that you should write direct to Peter Lawwell and explain your situation. You never know what can happen.

Sure you’re correct. He made The Sign Of The Cross as he exited. Sometime after this Danny McGrain commented that Johnston was one of the few RCs in the squad never to attend Sunday Mass when they were away on tours.

  10. Just leaving (10 mins) to catch train for game. Anyone going for a pint in the Merchant City area before game?

  11. Always remember wee Joe Miller for scoring the winning goal in the 1989 Cup Final against ‘them’!

Was a shy to ‘them’ but big Roy shoved everybody oot the way, took the throw in and…

I’m sure he was told to help our right back against their outside left and full back who were causing havoc down our rhs. But he just came on and done what he wanted.

I wouldn’t have liked to face Billy after that. He was raging mad.

I think Joe ran straight down the tunnel and maybe threw his top into the dugout, or something like that.

  15. Paul,

Extremely pertinent point about next season’s qualifier.

NL has recently observed that given the timing of the above, players will have an extremely short summer break. (The answer to that particular problem is summer football. But that is for another day.)

Rather than offloading at present time, Celtic should be trying to build up a squad that would allow NL to actually rest players in latter part of domestic season.

    Stevens in trouble……

    Crowd roars!

Love that commentary. Celtic nor our players got a mention from the thrown in being taken and the ball was in the net.

I remember there was usually an empty circle underneath the anticipated ‘landing place’ from where canny Celtic supporters had shuffled away.

There was a commentary by Archie McPherson commenting on Celtic supporters standing on the thin fences at Hampden during a game in the 80’s which my old man loves but we have never been able to find it again.

quonno – one of the things I’ll be listing in the survey is that we should put our weight behind a move to summer football.
