Ruthlessly dedicate to data or return to Voodoo

330

The battle between what your eye tells you about a player and what his outcomes are is over a decade old.  Does the player have heart and mental strength, or does he manage to achieve impressive outcomes without it?

Given the choice, I would probably opt for a player who can impress without the heart/strength combo.  You can do a lot of work on those things, but you cannot move the dial much when it comes to innate talent.  If he is achieving because he is maxed out on heart, adjust your expectations south.  How do you judge if a player can translate form in one environment to another, such as Celtic Park?  The stats tell you no more than your eye will on that one,

In 1990, Aston Villa chairman and manager, Doug Ellis and Graham Taylor sat preseason watching Villa play a Trinidadian side in a friendly.  They didn’t know the players name, but they knew they were not leaving the Caribbean the standout striker.  Doubtlessly, both the eye and the stats were in Dwight Yorke’s favour.

Brendan Rodgers entered this debate yesterday:

“There are things that you can never find out through analysis other than by being at a stadium, watching the player and seeing what their movement is like, seeing how he deals the with atmosphere.

“I always say, the analytical side doesn’t tell you if someone has a heart and personality. When you play for a club like this one, you need to have a heart and the mental strength.

“You have to find out those things and see them live. Obviously, statistics will give you a lot, but I’m not driven by it. It’s something which is a really good support for us.”

Who am I to tell our manager different, but I respectfully disagree.  Data driven recruitment is how elite teams operate.  If a player gets results because he has buckets of personality, because he has the Judgement of Solomon or because he has mastered the ancient practice of Voodoo, outcomes are all that matter.

Ruthlessly dedicate to outcomes or accept all this data modelling is just not for you.  Some souls in Haiti practice both Voodoo and Christianity.  Two gods to keep happy!  But don’t let me worry you, maybe it’ll work out fine for us.  Anyway, Hail Mary………

  1. Hello again. If you bet on Rogers to win the league, get another £40m+ from just appearing and getting thrashed in every game in the CL, sell O’Riley for £20M+, watch der Hun implode with debt and spend £100m on finishing the main stand to make it 80k or so, maybe more. Then you’ve taken some risks, but secured quite a lot. I fervently hope that this is the risky strategy being implemented. Because otherwise, none of this makes sense.

  2. Paul 67,

Not just Haiti where they have two God’s to keep Happy.

I prefer the New Orleans version where Christianity ( specifically Catholic Christianity) sit in compatability.

Maybe there are some differences however I do not believe they are irreconcilable, quite the opposite.

So, for our recruitment and the two God analogy. One thing is for sure our Vodoo has not been spellbinding.

Ai and visual need to sit in compatibility. New technologies cannot be uninverted.

However both can still fail our common goal.

Time will tell However to date i feel our summer and current recruitment have failed both God’s.

the ‘new main stand’ theory was something i said on here the other day about why we are just gathering in piles of cash (from us fans obviously)

i said it tongue in cheek as i dont really believe thats the reason.

no one doubts it needs done from a stadium point of view, but how many empty seats will there be most weeks because we have plenty of empties these with the current stadium size.

  5. SWISS TONY never happening were not building a side to stay on top in Scotland let alone for Europe or a stadium you’d never fill I’m afraid.

Until we get rid of the current custodians we are stuck stuck with the status quo.

Yes we are disappointed somewhat with this windae, but it is over and done with. Time to put the scarfs. Hats and macaroon bars back on and support the famous Glasgow Celtic. We support the team, not a board. If the players we have are not good enough to win this league then we didn’t deserve it. Every team that we play against is always up to play the Celtic and why shouldn’t they be!!! They are are paid to go out and give their best, just like our bhoys, but the difference is that our bhoys are under pressure from 60,000 andnot 6, 000, on a good day. It is the easiest thing to do, be negative when someone makes a mistake, how about we turn it around and give our Bhoy’s confidence when they mess up. We are Celtic. Let’s back the team, notice I said team, and give them the support that they deserve when they pull on that famous jersey. Football without the fans is nothing. Git intae them, cmon the famous hoops.

    Let’s go.

    Hail Hail

greenpinata’s post has more superfluous apostrophes than we have pounds in the bank!

  8. Dermot just finished his round at Pebble – maybe he’ll sanction the PSG players wages for season remaining. Expensive but the rewards are obvious and the backlash from the fans will be extreme if we don’t sign a left back.

What a disaster of a transfer window in terms of incomings – further compounded with CCV and Hatate injuries.

2hrs to alleviate my disgust at this boards complacency!

  9. I have long gave up on incoming players who’ll be of a certain standard….most years have been the same ….Bernabei at Pittodrie and Easter road gives me the fear

  11. It is far more likely that Celtic are holding on to cash in case they lose the CBC case than to build a new main stand .

  12. Interesting to see what reaction the Lawwells get at the first home game.

I hope they get feckin pelters. They deserve it.

Nepotism isn’t how you run a club. Ask the Kellys and Grants and Whites.

Head of Scouting and Recruitment, cos ma da got me the job, wasted a fortune in the summer and can’t come up with any quality. Joke.

Or, maybe he is not trusted to scout anything, if so, why wasn’t he replaced in September?

    Oh, wait…

  13. lets all do the huddle on

Nepotism isn’t how you run a club. Ask the Kellys and Grants and Whites.

but the difference is that we are a PLC these days unlike the Kelly/White era.

so from a company point of view what the kellys and whites done only got stopped by the fans.

but in a PLC, nepotism like that shouldnt be allowed to happen by law.

it would never be allowed in a major financial services or retail PLC

but just gets ignored with us because the rules revolve around how the shareholders get treated, so if you are a shareholder in celtic then all is good because of the cash reserves and so your dividends are good.

PLC rules dont care about results on a park!

  14. BBC Headline:

“Scottish transfer deadline day: Rangers land Cortes, Van Veen joins Killie, will Celtic sign anyone?”

Two loan deals count for more than a 3 million pounds purchase?

Mind you, many CQNers seem to believe so.

    Goodnight all.

It is far more likely that Celtic are holding on to cash in case they lose the CBC case than to build a new main stand .

folk have also said that wouldnt be the case because the sums involved would be a fraction of that, and company liability insurance would cover it etc etc

    who knows whats going on.

    i dont.

  16. Finally, it’s confirmed.

Celtic have signed Norwich striker Adam Idah on loan until the end of the season.

*new that was cumin, you just cannae help yersell

  18. Why would our chairman, a so-called celtic supporter, want to help sevco.

This goes beyond incompetence. There is something dark and unholy going on here.

To me it is clear he is trying to get rid of Brendan again.

  19. How folk can bring up the cbc scandle as a issue for our piss poor transfer dealings is beyond me. Celtic have insurers regards that includes liability for such matters. I recall how celtic’s insurers solicitors were dealing with issue, pulling the strings. Even if celtic had to pay its not likely the overall cost would run into 10s of millions for 30 odd folk.

Celtic have ringfenced money for barrowfield improvement so hardly a funding issue.

The real issue is that complacency has set in at boardroom level and they have created an echo chamber so there is no alternative voices.

    Joke of a club

  20. Been to many a meeting where echo chamber syndrome sets in and anyone who actually questions the view is brownbeat into submission or removed, dom mackay!!!!

  21. wonder why it took 2 days for him to sign – 1hr before the deadline is odd! esp for a non complicated loan deal .

Anyway, good luck to the lad and good luck to the team – luck unfortunately will play a much bigger part in our season than we would have hoped for. Joke of a recruitment strategy!

  22. Seems the only reason that the cash is not being spent is too keep sevco relevant.

The 5 way agreement, that Peter Lawwell signed up to would also point to that.

Seems to me that Lawwell is a problem, and has been for a long time. Chairmen funding up cash for players hoping to make a quick buck when sold on for mega money . . . . . .

In what other line of work would you get away with that sort of behaviour? Drug dealing probably.

  23. So this signing was the manager taking charge was it?

He must read this blog because the club’s official statement on the signing doesn’t have ONE SINGLE WORD from the manager in it. But it’s got part of Idah’s interview with club media.

First time I can ever remember seeing that.

  24. A signing completed yesterday, announced in the last hour of the window.

Contract extensions announced during the transfer window.

Bids turned down to allow us to keep our star player.

Celtic FC transfer window bingo completed.

  25. Maestro, has San Ciro been full every week? Bernabeu? Camp nou? Hallenstadion? Nope, far from it. But when the chips are down, it costs similar to maintain than a 60k joint. That’s where the advantage is. I think…

Best of luck & thank you for your contribution to #CelticFC, David!

  28. Martin’s last 2 seasons in charge coincided with Peter’s first 2 seasons. We bought one player at a total cost of £400k.

    Nothing much has changed.
